recent years was beautifully restored to accommodate up to
14 people in the atmosphere of a private home, now known as

ing Mt. Kenya and miles of unspoilt Africa, each with its own
private veranda and en-suite bathroom; the lodge has a swim-
ming pool, tennis court, and organic vegetable garden.

Here you can enjoy the huge vista of African mountains and
plains, together with the convenience of local amenities.
In addition, each plot has a guesthouse with two ensuite bed-
rooms, that could also be converted into a one-bedroom unit
with lounge and kitchen. A three-bedroom staff house, with
store and generator room, completes the plan.

were students. In 2000, Castle Forest Lodge was renovated to
accommodate slightly over thirty guests. When looking for a
weekend break, Castle Forest Lodge is ideally located at a just 3

Watamu Special
WAAM0
Watamu is situated on the North Coast, approximately 100 km North of Mombasa and
25 km South of Malindi. Watamus beach, voted one of the top ten beaches in the
world, has a reputation for being quiet. So quiet, in fact, you are often not within a
kilometre of the nearest sunbather or other beach walkers.
The Watamu Marine Nationalpark is also recognized internationally as a UNESCO
Biosphere Reserve. The area is designated as a site of natural excellence, and should
demonstrate how local people and the environment can co exist. The park and its
coral gardens are one of the main justifications for visiting Watamu.
The waters off Watamu offer the opportunity for a variety of water sports, including
deep sea fishing, kite surfing, wind surfing, Kayaking, snorkelling amongst others.
Activities
urtle Watch
Several species of marine turtle lay their
eggs on the beaches around Watamu and
Watamu Turtle Watch, part of the Local
Ocean Trust, has set up a series of initia-
tives with local people to protect these
threatened animals. Female turtles lay
thousands of eggs here between January
and April. Contact the trusts Marine In-
formation Centre if youre interested in
seeing this incredible natural spectacle.
Mida Creek
The mangrove forests around Mida
Creek, just South of Watamu, support a
huge number of bird species, including
the spectacular malachite kingsher,
2ellow-billed stork and Alrican sh
eagle. Its paradise for bird-watchers and
there is also a place for snorkelling and
scuba diving at the mouth of the creek.
Marine National Park
The Marine Park and Reserve is re-
nowned world wide for its natural beau-
ty and boasts a rich marine life from the
visiting Whale Sharks and Manta Rays to
three species of Sea Turtle.
Pristine white-sand beaches and reef-
protected lagoons line the Watamu
National Marine Park. It is one of the
best kept secrets in the world with only
the Great Barrier Reef itself having a
bigger species list and that only in a far
greater expanse! It is virtually impos-
sible to snorkel without seeing at least a
few dozen species inside the main reef;
divers outside the fringe reef stand an
excellent chance ol viewing the magni-
cent whale shark and Manta Rays that
are seasonal visitors. The park is also
home to three species of sea turtle who
also nest on the Marine Park beaches.
6ede Ruins
Gede Ruins is a 12th century Swahili
village that was mysteriously abandoned
some 600 years ago. It is now a National
Museum, and the ruins are heavily over-
grown with beautiful indigenous forest
trees, baobabs and tamarind. Taking a
guided tour through the ruins and the
museum will teach you a lot of interest-
ing things about the fascinating culture
of the Swahili people and the ancient
town they constructed. Additionally,
you can walk along the nature trail net-
work leading to lesser ruins.
Arabuko Sokoke Iorest
The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest is is the
largest remaining section of dry coastal
forest found in Eastern and Southern
Africa. It is a unique habitat character-
ized by an enormous array ol ora and
fauna. It has no less than six endangered
species of birds, three of them endemic
to the forest, as well as the little known
Golden Rumped Elephant Shrew, a giant
shrew that has only been identied in
a couple of locations in East Africa. For
visitors less keen on twitching and
ornithology the forest is also lovely for a
walk, and exciting too, considering there
is a resident herd of elephant and buf-
falo! If you are generally interested in
nature or like hiking, biking and camp-
ing, Arabuko-Sokoke is a good destina-
tion for you.
