By now most people will be aware that next Sunday,
the great Solemnity of Pentecost, will mark not only
the end of our Easter celebraons, but also the
beginning of the Year of Grace. During our Masses
next weekend we will liturgically mark the beginning
oftheYearofGrace.

Celebrang the beginning of the Year of Grace is one

Bishops of Australia have invited us to consider a

Thenaonalwebsite(yearofgrace.catholic.org.au)this
week posted a list of 1,000 possibilies that might be
taken up as part of our keeping of the Year of Grace.
That list will be constantly updated, so I could

weekend for those who are grieving the loss of a

Connuing to explore the relaonship of the liturgy
and the devoonal treasury of the Church, in light of
the Churchs teaching on this sub0ject.

Aecve prayer has a dierent intent. Though it has

manyformsmeditaon,centringprayer,prayingthe
rosary,devoonalprayersofallkindsithasasingle
aim, to draw us and our loved ones into deeper
inmacy with Christ. In the end, not maer its
parcular form, all nonliturgical prayer ulmately
aims at person inmacy with God and is, ulmately
too,private,evenwhenitisdonepubliclyorinalarge
group. All private and devoonal prayer can be
dened in this way: it is prayer that tries, in myriad
ways, to open us or our loved ones up in such a way
thatwecanhearGodsaytous:Iloveyou!

It is important to know this disncon between

priestly prayer and aecve prayer when we go to
pray: Which kind of prayer are we entering? To
confuse the two is to risk doing both badly. For
example,thepersonwhofeelsfrustratedbecausethe
liturgical ritual and interacon of a congregaon
inside a church service are felt as a hindrance and
distracon to the private devoonal prayers she
would like to be saying is confusing the two forms of
prayer and is consequently doing both badly. The
funcon of liturgical prayer is not rst of all
devoonal.

Or somemes the confusion leads someone to

abandon one form of liturgical prayer altogether. I
know, for example, a man who aer years of praying
theOceoftheChurchissubstunghisownprivate
prayer in its place because he doesnt nd the ritual
prayerspersonallymeaningful.Hisprivatemeditaons
now might well be wonderful aecve prayer, but he
is no long praying the priestly prayer of Christ when
heisprayinginthisway.Weseethissomemestooin
wellintenoned, but badly planned, church services
where what is intended to be a liturgical service ends
up being a guided private meditaon, however well
done and powerful, which neither uses scripture nor
praysfortheworld.

Churches themselves struggle with this. Roman

Catholics,AnglicansandmainlineProtestantchurches
have a strong liturgical tradion, somemes to the
detriment of aecve prayer. Evangelical and
Pentecostal churches, on the other hand, have a
strong focus on aecve prayer, somemes to the
point of neglecng liturgical prayer almost enrely.
