    Yahya (AS)
    In Sura Maryam (sura 19) Allah (SWT) teaches us about Yahya. Prophet Zakariya and his wife were quite old. Prophet Zakariya and his wife did not have any children even though they had been married for a long time. Prophet Zakariya (AS) prayed to Allah (SWT) to give him a son 1 of 4

    who would inherit him and also uphold his mission and the mission of his forefathers. Prophet Zakariya (AS) was an ascetic and a leader of the Jewish learned men. He lived away from the glitter of the worldly life. He prayed in a whisper to Allah (SWT). It was due to his closeness to Allah (SWT) due to his distance from the material world that Allah (SWT) granted him a son. This sons name was chosen by Allah (SWT). He was called Yahya (John) from hayat or life. The birth of Yahya (AS) and Issah (AS) were miracles. Yahya was born to an old woman who did not have any children and Issah (AS) was born to Hazrat Maryam without a father. Yahya (AS) was born several years earlier than Issah (AS) and gave the news of Issah (AS) prophethood to the people. He did this before Issah (AS) was born. Yahya (AS) was a pure and god fearing child. He became the Prophet of Allah (SWT) at the age of three. Ayyashi (a Muslim scholar) quotes Ali bin Asbath. Ali bin Asbath said that once he went to visit Imam Ali Ibn Musa (AS) in Madina. He was much impressed by the Imam and wanted to inform all in Egypt about him. At this moment the Imam (AS) recited We gave him (Yahya) wisdom while yet a child. Similarly Imam Ali (AS) was made the inheritor of the Prophet when he was 10 years old in the event of Zul Asheera. The incident of Yahya (AS) who became a Prophet at age 3 shows that it is possible to be an inheritor of a Prophet at age 10. None can deny that Imam Ali (AS) is the first Imam due to his young age.

    When the Holy Prophet passed away and Abu Bakr was made caliph to rule over the Muslim community. Abu Bakr said that Hazrat Fatima Zehra (SA) the Prophet (PBUH) daughter could not inherit the land of Fadak from her father. Abu Bakr said that he had heard the Holy Prophet (PBUH) say "We the messengers of Allah neither inherit nor leave inheritance" Hazrat Fatima Zehra (SA) recited the following verse which proves that messenges leave inherit and leave inheritance. 19:5. Indeed I fear my kinsmen, after me, and my wife is barren. So grant me from Yourself an heir 19:6. who may inherit from me and inherit from the House of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You]!

    Imam Hussain (AS) remembers Yahya (AS)


    Sufyan Ibn 'Uyyainah recited on the authority of Ali Ibn Zaid on the Authority of Ali Ibn Al Husain (AS) who said that Imam Hussain (AS) never descended upon a place of descent nor did he depart from a place except that he mentioned Yahya Ibn Zakariya. One day he said: One of the

    disgraces of this world for Allah the Mighty and Majestic was that the head of Yahya Ibn Zakariya led to an injustive among the injustices of the children of Israel.

    Ten attributes of Yahya (AS)


    1) And We gave him judgement while still a child 2) Compassion 3) Purity 4) God-wariness 5) Good to his parents 6) He was not insolent 7) He was not disobedient Due to this Allah (SWT) sent peace on him 8) On the day he was born 9) On the day he dies 10) On the day he is raised to life

    Yahya (AS) is martyred


    The king of his time (reputed to be Herod) honored and obeyed Yahya (AS). One of the Queens had a beautiful step-daughter. The Queen wanted the King to marry her step-daughter. Yahya (AS) said that according to their religion this is not correct. The step-daughter demanded that the King marry her only if he gave her Yahya (AS) head on a platter as a wedding gift. The king had Yahya (AS) beheaded and presented his head on a platter to her.

    Similarities between Yahya (AS) and Imam Hussain (AS)


    Aqa Mahdi Puya says: According to the Ahl ul Bayt, the names of Muhammad, Ali, Hasan and Husayn were also chosen for the first time under divine inspiration. Imam Jafar bin Muhammad as Sadiq said: "Before Yahya and Husayn, no one was ever named by either of their names. For no one the heavens wept for forty days save Yahya and Husayn.

    The murderers of Yahya and Husayn were illegitimate. The heads of both of them were severed from their bodies and displayed in the streets and the courts which (according to Imam Husayn) prove the worthlessness of this world in the estimation of Allah. The head of Yahya was presented before the depraved wife of the Egyptian king and her daughter and the head of Husayn was presented to the sons of whores.") ("The heavens wept" means the sun became extraordinarily red according to the Imam).
