Introduction

ForEword
here are powerful methods that can change the course of ones life. There are ways to combine Mother Natures herbs and ones faith to stimulate to future outcomes. You could take a bath and find your soul mate. You could dream, a little dream, and win the lottery. You could even go as far as making a rival coworkers life just a bit irritating. With the right tools, a person could have endless blessings in store. Dr. Buzzards Success almanac, Book 1; Dr. Buzzards Spiritual Enchantments, Book 2; and Dr. Buzzards Success Dream Book, Book 3 will guide you to find the power within yourself. You will learn how to alter your surroundings to fit your personal needs. Having faith and following step by step instructions will lead you on a path to control your life and future. Dream interpretations for us, and by us, coupled with the power in numbers are only bite-sized morsels of what is in store. You will also explore a mystical natural herbal system called Hoodoo. Hoodoo, also known as Root Work, is an herbal system that has been in existence for many generations. This proven system is the foundation of many southern beliefs. One may remember their great-aunt sprinkling salt around the house, and then sweeping it out through the back door. Do you know why that was done? Dr. Buzzards Success almanac, Book 1 will not only explain the reasons why salt is important,
Charm
ix
but you will also learn how to sweep it correctly. There are many misinterpretations associated with Hoodoo. The name alone conjures up images of witches with long white hair, dressed in all black, and holding cotton Voodoo dolls shaped in human form. Another image could be Africans with painted symbols on faces chanting in front of an open fire. These clichd images have scared us away from understanding a system like Hoodoo. Yet in accordance with God, Hoodoo is a healing tradition. It evokes potions and rituals for blessings, protection, health and happiness. By breaking down the Hoodoo history in this book, you will learn the historic practices that were used for protection, prosperity and personal desires. Forced to live in the so-called New World, Africans had to adjust to their new way of life. They received assistance from Native Americans, who helped slaves to understand the resources they could use from the new land. These resources had similar uses to the herbs from their homeland. Hoodoo came to pass by mixing Africans beliefs and rituals with Native Americans knowledge. Root doctors, as they were known, were Africans that specialized in the herbal mixtures and rituals. They began to spread their powers throughout the South and as a result Hoodoo evolved. There were many root doctors, but Dr. Buzzard was the most renowned root doctor in the South. He was known for his mysterious healings and ritual work. He had the power to control any situation, as well as refute evil with evil. Hoodoo practitioners continue to implement Dr. Buzzards work. Since Dr. Buzzard rituals were so successful, many generations of practitioners employed his rituals. Dr. Buzzard book series are a reflection of his work.
In this book, Dr. Buzzards Success almanac, Book 1 you will learn how to perform simple rituals by using easy-tomake oils, candles, baths, and even Mojo Bags. Learning to make your own essentials is as easy as baking a favorite dish. Once the mixtures are made, you can keep them around your house without looking like the good ole root doctors cabin. Add decorative fruits or spices to the mixture, and put it in a retro-colored bottle which could be kept near your spice rack. Guests will think you have a unique style of decorating. Step by step, Dr. Buzzard will teach you how to make the essentials that will enhance your life and your future. In Dr. Buzzards Success Dream book, Book 3 your life will be deciphered on a different level. You will learn to interpret the true meanings of your dreams. Historically, dreams have lead to events that have impacted our lives. Harriet Tubman had envisioned the routes of the Underground Railroad in her dreams; Fredrick Douglass acquaintance dreamt that Douglas had been captured in one of his first attempts for freedom.1 More currently, people within our families, our friends and ourselves had dreams of fish. An elder might say it symbolizes pregnancy of a close friend or relative. Dreams are the window of our desires. They are the window panes of our beliefs and fears. As African Americans, our beliefs stem from spiritual upbringing. The African slave brought deep rooted beliefs with them to the new land, by way of birth and the descendents. They have become the lineage pedigree of superstitions. Our sayings and meanings are often present in our reality. We embrace our dreams, because we see, time after time, how closely they relate to our lives. Dr. Buzzards Success Dream book, Book 3, will decipher many of those meanings and sayings.

This book will also shed light on our elders sayings and superstitions that have been passed down from generation to generation. It seems as if folks in the 21st century have forgotten and ignored much of our ancestors guidance. Have you ever ignored your mothers warning from a dream that she had only to find out that it came true? How about the time you did not want to use your great-grandfathers home remedy to cure an ailment that was bothering you. At that time you just did not believe it could work. It is a shame that we constantly insist on learning things the hard way. One of the goals of the Dr. Buzzards collection is to supply you with knowledge. The knowledge is from historical lessons. Dr. Buzzards books offer a step by step guide to make you understand and believe that spiritual power is real. Throughout this book we will be using the term Blacks and African Americans interchangeably. Many Americans use the term Black as a word to describe their race, while others use the term African American. According to most dictionaries and websites, these terms mean the same thing. This covers Black Latinos, Black Europeans, Black Asians, Black Africans, and of course Black Americans. If you were born in London as a black person and moved to the United States, you are an African American. If you were born in Brazil and are a black person that moved to the United States you are an African American. You see, African blood is a part of the Diaspora of black people from Africa. It cannot be removed for convenience. If you are an American citizen and you look Black, then you are an African American. Do you think that Black Americans and White Americans dreams are the same? Many people may believe that our
xii
dreams are universal similar in nature, regardless of race or ethnicity. However, research has shown that this assumption is not the case. Black Americans and White Americans have different dreams. Black people take dreams more seriously, and acknowledge the innuendos that are presented in the twilight sleeping moments. We look for answers to the messages, and desperately try to interpret the messages presented in dreams from God, our ancestors, or spirits from a higher entity. African Americans believe that dream meanings traveled with African slaves to the New World. These dream meanings are still a part of the African American culture of dream interpretation. Today, African Americans are hard pressed to find urban dreams in mainstream dream books. A dream of seeing sneakers hanging from a telephone wire, with the shoelaces tied together, will not be found in popular dream books. A dream of seeing your mother cooking chit lings (chitterlings) will not be found in common dream books. Its been whispered that our dreams differ from White people, and yet many would not say it out loud. Actually, there is existing documentation proving that African Americans and White Americans dream differently. A dream interpretation survey that included both African Americans and White Americans showed that 99% of African Americans have dreams with White people in them. However, only 77% of the White participants said that they dreamed of African American people.2 Nearly a quarter of the White participants said they had never had a dream with a Black person in it! Dr. Buzzards Success Dream Book, Book 2 will aid you in understanding the underlying meanings of your dreams. Once you have uncovered the
Charm
xiii
symbolism in your dreams, you will be equipped to use that information in your every day life. You will be empowered, because you will have decoded many of the signs and messages within your dreams. You will discover in Dr. Buzzards Success Dream Book, Book 2 that dreams have multiple meanings. Dreams also offer the dreamer a number message. There are numbers associated with everything, including dreams of delicious chicken wings, or of sneakers hanging from a city light pole. This section will teach you the power of your nightly visions. Your dreams will become your source of power to control your financial future. Your dreams will guide you to pick lucky numbers for gambling. More importantly, your dreams will help you to discover the best days to sign important documents, and/or enter into contractual agreements. Our grandparents believed that reading ones dreams would be the ticket out of the ghetto, and if they lived in the South, it was their guide saving money for a rainy day (Southerners love to save money). It does not matter if the dreamer is from the North or the South, dreams are a big element within the African American community. We believe in the power of dreams, and in turn, our dreams have offered us ethereal guidance when it comes to finances, or financial opportunities. After reading, you will take heed to the meanings of your dreams. And oh yes, they may offer more than a memory. Do you recall the late 90s Magic 8-Ball game? You had to shake up a plastic ball that looked like a black pool table ball, while asking a question. From a small hole, a triangular object that was floating inside the ball would reveal your answer with sayings such as It is decidedly so or Very
xiv
doubtful. In Book 3, you will have the chance to determine your fate in a game that requires more than just shaking up a glass ball. You will be the bearer of your own fate, because this game requires you to get more involved in order to find answers to your questions. Dr. Buzzards Success Dream Book, Book 3 will teach you ways to identify signs and symbols in your everyday life that will benefit you. There are signs out there that we just do not see, because we are too busy ignoring the universes assistance. There are money, luck, love and protection right at your fingertips! Are you ready? Lets start at the beginning - to a time when there was no other way to Do the do, as Dr. Buzzard would say, but to go to the source.
21
t is very important to know the source of all ingredients used in Hoodoo. Relying on store-bought ingredients just isnt ideal for a true Hoodoo practitioner. For example, why would a seller of healing oils want your ailments to go away? If that happens, they lose you as a customer. Making your own ingredients for rituals will bring better results, without having the stress of wondering, if my purchase was correct. If you were a baker, would you buy an apple pie from the supermarket? If you were brought up eating soul food from Southern cooks in your family, can you really enjoy the taste of a commercially produced macaroni and cheese? Does it taste the same? If you baked your own, the taste would be impeccable because you added all the needed ingredients to make it taste just right. It is the same as waiting until you went to visit Aunt Gerris house to get some mac and cheese. In other words, its just not right if its not done by someone you trust. Our ancestors found sufficient ways to make their own ingredients for things that can be found in stores nowadays. They wouldnt just walk to the nearest African Hoodoo/ botanical store and pick up some Blessing Oil. Generations before us would get all the herbs and essentials needed to make their own mixtures from their own backyards. They used scared pots and utensils to create the ingredients they needed. Centuries ago, you couldnt find oils for love, luck and blessings. Everything was made in, and found around, the house. For example, as mentioned earlier, High John the Conqueror root could be found growing around the slaves
22
homes. In South Carolina, this root still grows around homes today. Scores of great-grandmothers made their own ingredients. Why cant you? Why worry if the ingredients being used for healing oil are pure, or compound correctly? Instead you can reach for your own sandalwood oil, sesame oil, and some cayenne pepper all the ingredients that you made in your home and know that these oils are untainted. You can take some of these oils and create your own healing mixture. You can rest assured knowing that all the proper natural ingredients are in place because your hands created everything from scratch. Growing your own herbs guarantees that all ingredients in your rituals are right. You can grow your own herbs, thus enabling you to make your very own oils, bath mixtures and Mojo Bags. Before getting involved in rituals and using important charm bags, you must understand the elements that go into them. The best way to do that is to produce these essentials yourself. You can establish peace of mind by simply taking the time to generate your own elements from nature. This section of the almanac is dedicated to teaching you how to get started using and making the ingredients for Hoodoo. Do not be afraid. It can be intimidating to know that you are about to dive into the beginning of your new future. But do not worry - Dr. Buzzard is your guide. Step by step you will learn the ways Dr. Buzzard created many sacred herbs and oils with his bare hands.

emember when a teacher forced the bad kids to write in their notebooks, I will not talk in class 100 times? Could something as simple as writing repeatedly be a type of ritual? Yes, very much so. A petition is a written request to have a specific desire fulfilled. It is a type of ritual that channels your energy for a desire even further. Anything done repeatedly with focused intent is a ritual. One can recall stereotypical Hollywood images of witches repeatedly stirring a concoction in a big black pot while chanting. Well, there is some truth to what Hollywood was showing us. The continuous motion of stirring and chanting is one of the main reasons why spells work. Lets take the meaning to a more relatable level. How many times have you repeatedly thought about a friend that you had not heard from in months, only to have that friend call you? Petitions work in the same manner. A petition can be used alone as well as with any ritual. While it may not be stated with many of the rituals provided in this book, a true ritual is not complete without a petition. It is the final step to obtaining your desired result. It is a way of channeling powerful forces into whatever you want to happen. There are a few types of paper that can be used in petitions. Parchment paper, red or black construction paper and brown paper can all be used for certain types of petitions. Parchment paper is the best paper to use for good petitions, or petitions to control a good situation. Parchment paper is virgin paper. It is made of calf, sheep or goat skin. This type of paper was used in ancient times to write sacred text. Artists also used this type
Charm
105
of paper for their paintings. The color of parchment paper is a soft egg shell white. If this type of paper cannot be found, one can use virgin un-recycled paper. If you absolutely cannot find parchment paper, you can use the paper from a brown paper bag. This can be found in art supply stores or the post office (it is the paper that you use to wrap boxes being shipped). You can even use the brown paper bags from the grocery store to write petitions. The point is that the paper needs to be neutral or untainted. Brown paper should only be used in an emergency where parchment paper cannot be found. Brown paper is mainly used for bad rituals, as well as in controlling rituals for enemies or other bad situations. Black construction paper is only used for bad rituals, while Red construction paper can be used for rituals of love and attraction. When writing a petition, pencils are strongly encouraged, as the lead does not run. You can use a pen on the construction paper if you cannot find a pencil. Petitions are used in a variety of ways. Therefore, the words on the petition need to stay legible. Petitions are usually saturated with oils that coincide with the desire of the petition. They are placed in Mojo Bags, underneath dressed candles as well as in hidden places like the inside a shoe, a wallet or a purse. If you can obtain it, Doves blood ink is a powerful ink used to write all good things like love, peace and blessings on parchment paper. Dragons blood ink, however, is used to write requests for more menacing things like hexes, or things you want done to an enemy. This type of ink should only be used on brown paper or black construction paper. Never erase or cross out something that was already written on the paper. This gesture will taint the paper with the mistake and your ritual could go wrong. You must start over
106
again with whatever it is you are writing. Never photocopy a petition. Many rituals require you to write the same thing on more than one piece of paper. You must write the same thing on each piece of paper. It is of utmost importance to focus and get your desire right the first time. It cannot be stressed enough that you should be in a quiet place where you cannot be disturbed while writing a petition. There is no standard way of writing a petition. The pieces of paper that you cut out for rituals do not have to be cut a certain way. Rituals all have different ways of being written. The basic fundamental of a petition is that you must write repeatedly, with a focused intent. Spells may ask that you write a petition in the formation of an X (for enemy rituals) or from the top to the bottom on a candle (control rituals). Folding a petition is also important. After writing whatever is needed for a specific spell, you should fold the paper in a certain way, still concentrating on your desire. For good spells, fold the paper in half toward you. Then turn it clockwise and fold it again. Turn it clockwise and fold it one more time. Repeat this process until you can no longer fold it. For bad rituals, you must fold the paper away from you then turn it repeatedly counterclockwise. You can sprinkle petitions with powders and incense, or dab specific oils on them and place them underneath dressed candles. Petitions are one way to enforce good and bad spiritual forces. Unfortunately, this world is full of evil doers and protecting ourselves is sometimes our only way of mental and physical survival.
