Museum to hold first-ever 'Ghost Stories at Highland'

Three Valley Museum, in conjunction with the Bryan County Genealogy Library, will be conducting Historical Ghost Stories at Highland Cemetery on Oct. 27, beginning at 7 p.m. This event, which is a fund raiser for both organizations, is one of great historical significance. The Genealogy Library has researched the lives of six individuals who have made an impact on the development of Durant and Southeastern Oklahoma. Small groups will be led from one grave site to another to hear the story of each individual. Actors, dressed in period costume, and posing as the chosen person of interest will convey events of the historical person's life. The story of Sidney Bledsoe, Durant's first town marshal, will be told. There will be stories at the unmarked graves of the Confederate soldiers, a visit into the life of Choctaw code talker Walter Veach, Governor R.L. Williams, Mrs. Meta Belle Hatchett, and Pauline Amsel, the 13- year old daughter of a Jewish merchant who was murdered in her bed. To this date, the mystery of her death is unsolved. Please note that the tour will entail significant walking. However, wheelchair access is available on the paved roads which run through the cemetery. Most sites are near the road. Tickets will be sold at the Three Valley Museum and the Bryan County Genealogy Library for $10 each. No one under 17 will be admitted without adult supervision. Times for each tour are as follows: 7 p.m., 7:30 p.m., 8 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 9 p.m. Groups are limited to 25 people. Please join us for this unique adventure as we explore the lives of those who came before us through "Ghost Stories at Highland." For more information, contact the museum staff at 920-1907 or Genealogy Library at 434-5848.

Wild Hog Festival to include Rotary Gun Show on Oct. 12-13

The 29th annual Rotary Gun Show will have a new feel this year as it joins the Wild Hog Festival for the first time, this coming Friday and Saturday, Oct.1213. The gun show will be held inside the Choctaw Event Center, where close to 75 vendors as well as food concessions will be available. Meanwhile, outside next to the Event Center there will be three major events over two days: "Blues, Beans & Brew" will be held at 5 p.m. Friday; a fish fry is set for 11 a.m. Saturday; and the Wild Hog Fest cook-off competition wraps things up starting at 5 p.m. Saturday. Rotary Club of Durant has held the gun show in November at Bryan County fairgrounds for nearly three decades, so this year's change of time and venue is seen as an opportunity to reach more outdoor enthusiasts before the various shooting seasons arrive. Another big change: There is no entry fee. Visitors will be able to peruse the gun, knife, ammunition, hunting and fishing supply vendors free of charge at Choctaw Event Center. The Rotary Club is appreciative of DuSee FESTIVAL I A2

Vision screenings to be provided at Calera Schools

Prevent Blindness Oklahoma, a nonprofit agency dedicated to eye health and safety, will be at Calera Schools Monday and Tuesday. Through its Children's Vision Screening Program and a 26-year partnership with the Oklahoma Masons, free vision screenings are being provided at Calera Schools on those days.
