Mountainfest 2012 Musical extravaganza The Langley Concert Band will perform cancelled with the Nicola Valley Community Band
Yesterday, Claude Lelievre posted a cancellation & farewell notice on the Mountainfest website: It is with deep regret that the management of the Merritt Mountain Music Festival has come to the sad decision to cancel the 2012 edition of Mountainfest. The reason for the cancellation is the low ticket sales. Patrons who have purchased tickets are asked to call their credit card provider and request a refund. The management wishes to thank all of the patrons, the hundreds of loyal and dedicated volunteers and staff, as well as its sponsors; all of whom have historically made what Mountainfest meant to hundreds of thousands of country music fans over the past 18 years. The management apologizes deeply for any inconvenience that this cancellation notice may bring to them. Good bye to all.

Late last week, Bob & Bev Scafe spotted a rare bird at their birdfeeder an acorn woodpecker on their property on Spanish Creek Place just off Coldwater Road on the outskirts of town. They alerted their biologist friend, Alan Burger, and he put the word out to the Nicola Naturalist Society, and the Bird Watch Hotline, resulting in an influx of visitors hoping to get a glimpse of the bird, rarely seen in these parts. The acorn woodpecker seldom ventures north of California. It is occasionally seen as far north as central Oregon, so this one is certainly off course, said Bob. The acorn woodpecker is easily identified and unlikely to be mistaken for any of the local woodpeckers with its bright red head. This one appears to be a female it has a black band across the top of the head between the white forehead and red back of the head. The Scafes have also had a Lewis's woodpecker in their yard. While it is in its territory, it is one of those birds that is simply very elusive and seldom seen at any time.

In 2003, a group of friends now known as the Lilac Conspiracy wanted to celebrate our community and increase Merritts bohemian factor. What better way than to celebrate the beautiful heritage lilacs that abound in the Nicola Valley! By mounting a home-grown localised event, symbolized by the lilac which a plant hardy enough to survive the harsh environment (politics and all), the living community might participate in something meaningful. Out of the initial efforts to bring awareness to Merritts lilac gold, and with Deanne Parises influence, the Merritt Lilac Project was launched in 2005, and some 5,000 lilacs have been planted in our community, thanks to the generosity of the Lilac King, Bill Vander Zalm. This week is Lilac Week in the Nicola Valley, and the Lilac Conspiracy will evangelize Merritts lilacs again during the Baillie Houses Spring Garden Festival, with displays & a plant sale/exchange, this Saturday May 26, 10am-3pm, Communities in Bloom also presents Art in the Garden.
