Nearly 4 years after the murder of the 3 Schoenborn children by their mentally ill father, Allan Schoenborn, the representative for children and youth, Mary Ellen Turpel-Lafon, reported her findings yesterday. She said the BC govt failed to implement many of her recommendations from her report on a murder-suicide in Oak Bay five years ago. She says that to this day there is still no effective system for protecting children living with domestic violence. She concluded that the deaths of Kaitlynne, Max & Cordon Schoenborn children could have been prevented if police, justice, child welfare, mental health, and income assistance systems had worked effectively and in partnership. Instead, Allan Schoenborn's mental illness went untreated, warning signs were missed, and trips through the justice system produced meaningless results, said the report, Make Their Voices Heard Now. Schoenborn was later found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder and sent to a psychiatric hospital for an indeterminate period of time. Ms. Turpel-Lafond said that BC lags behind other jurisdictions in setting up domestic violence courts, and there is still no co-ordinated system to protect children and families. Premier Christy Clark apologized in the legislature to the children's mother and family for the tragedy, and promised to do better. The govt announced a new child domestic violence unit within the children's ministry, which will work with a committee of deputy ministers to get a handle on services that exist, identify gaps and develop an action plan by July 31. The Nicola Valley Farmers Market is hosting a logo design contest, top prize is $50 cash and one runner-up will be awarded $25 cash. The guidelines are simple: theyre looking for a fun, cheery and original logo that incorporates the 4 aspects of their mandate that vendors must make/bake/grow/build anything they sell. They are also a local organization that works to create a feeling of "community" within the community. Entries are due by March 21st at 12noon. The winner and runner up will be selected by NV Farmers Market membership at the 2012 AGM on March 28.
