Lab20: Properties of systems in chemical equilibrium- Le Chatelier’s Principle

Purpose
A. Finding the reagents that will force the chemical equilibrium system to go to the other form and back to
its original color
B. Finding the value of Ksp
C. Predicting which ions will be present
D. By lowering the concentration of OH- dissolve an insoluble solid compound

Procedures
Procedure A: Acid-Base Indicators
1. Add about 5mL of distilled water and few drops of methyl violet indicator to a test tube
2. Record the color on the data table
3. Select a reagent that will change the color and record the formula and the color
4. Select a reagent that will return the color back to original and record the formula
Procedure B: Solubility equilibrium- finding a value for Ksp
1. Using 400mL beaker half full of water, set up the hot bath
2. Add 5mL of 0.3M Pb(NO3)2 to a test tube
3. Pour 5mL of 0.3M HCl in the graduate cylinder
4. Pour the first 1mL of HCl into the test tube and record the result
5. Add it by 1-mL increments until white solid PbCl2 is present after stirring
6. Record the volume of HCl used
7. Put the test tube into the hot bath and stir
8. Record the result
9. In the graduate cylinder, add about 5mL of distilled water to the cylinder
10. Add water in 1-mL increment and record the volume of water used when the precipitate
dissolved
Procedure C: Complex ion equilibria
1. Put few crystals of (.1g) CoCl2* 6 H2O into the test tube
2. Add 2mL of 12M HCl and dissolve the crystals
3. Record the color of the solution
4. Add 2mL portions of distilled water, stirring after each dilution until no further color change
occurs
5. Record the new color
6. Place the test tube in hot bath and note any change in color
7. Cool the test tube under tap water and note any changes in color
Procedure D: Dissolving insoluble solids
1. To each of the three small test tubes add about 2mL of 0.1M Zn(NO3)2
2. To the first test tube, add dropwise of 6M HCl and stir
3. To the second, add 6M NaOH
4. To the third, add 6M NH3
5. Record what happens in each case
6. Repeat the steps but using solution of 0.1M Mg(NO3)2

** the residues from part B&C should be poured in the designated waste containers**
