The Importance of Material science in Engineering and Infrastructure

Development

Materials play an important role in engineering and infrastructure development. Whether it is

aerospace, mechanical, environmental or other engineering fields the makeup of substances is
always a key factor which must be known. Material science is an interdisciplinary field which
deals with the discovery and design of new materials. Though it is a relatively new scientific
field that involves studying materials through the materials paradigm (synthesis, structure,
properties and performance), its intellectual origins reach back to the emerging fields of
chemistry, mineralogy and engineering during the Enlightenment. It incorporates elements of
physic and chemistry, and is at the forefront. In recent years, materials science has become more
widely known as a specific field of science and engineering. The concept of engineering has
existed since ancient times as humans devised fundamental inventions. Engineering is the
practical application of science and math to solve problems, and it is
everywhere in the world around you. From the start to the end of each day,
engineering technologies improve the ways that we communicate, work,
travel, stay healthy, and entertain ourselves where as Infrastructure
Development involves fundamental structures that are required for the
functioning of a community & society. This is usually referred to structures
like roads, water supply, sewers, electrical grids, telecommunications,
renewable energy, and so on. Indeed, material science and engineering is at
the forefront of high Infrastructure Development for the simple reason that
advancements Infrastructure Development are the direct result of advances
in materials. The importance of materials science is not recent. We only have to look at the
names of eras to realize that materials have been instrumental in the advance of civilization: the
Stone Age, the Bronze Age, and the Iron Age. The field of materials science with respect to

engineering is directed towards understanding why materials behave the way they do, how
materials are made and how new materials with unique properties can be created. Engineering
today has morphed from only dealing with the physical aspect of the field
into the theory behind the field. All engineering fields have unique bonds
with the materials in the world.
