The Bet is a story about a banker and a young lawyer who made a bet about what is

more human, life imprisonment or death penalty. The story is narrated from the
viewpoint of the banker and starts by the banker remembering the bet he has made
with a young lawyer fifteen years ago. The banker argues that death penalty is
more humane than life imprisonment while the lawyer insists that he would choose
life imprisonment over the death penalty. To settle the bet, the banker staked two
million rubles that the lawyer cannot withstand imprisonment, a challenge that the
lawyer accepted, setting the duration of his imprisonment for fifteen years for two
million rubles which he would receive after.
The bet was on and the lawyer was secluded inside the bankers garden house and
was deprived of any contact with the outside world and was only permitted of
reading materials, a piano and wine. The lawyer spends his time reading and
studying and experiencing the world through the books. The lawyer, during those
fifteen years, gambled most of his fortunes in the stock exchange and was in debt.
A day before the date of the lawyers release, he plans to kill the lawyer as paying
the two million would cause him in great debt only to find out that the lawyer
intends to leave his room five minutes before the fifteen years of imprisonment
ends, thus forfeiting the bet.
