What is
Socioeconomics?
Socioeconomics: A combo of social and
economic factors
In simpler terms: A field of study that
analyzes the environment around you,
including social and economic influences
In America, your zip code or your
socioeconomic status should never
determine the quality of your education
Arne Duncan

How does Socioeconomic

status affect education?

Children with low

socioeconomic status
(SES) have a high
possibility of developing
academic skills slower
than children with
higher-SES. This is
correlated with the
environment and
resources that are
available or not

Schools in Low-SES
communities also suffer
from things such a high
unemployment rates,
low achievements in
education, and little to
no resources.

What can Society do to help?

*All schools can focus on creating an informationrich environment

*Low-SES and High-SES schools can work on
interacting with parents through out the year with
their students.
*Continue to improve school curriculums more often
*Teachers should strive to get to know the
environments their kids are coming from. In order to
have a better understanding of each child.

HEALTH

How SES works with

Health
The influence of SES on health is assumed to begin early in life,
perhaps even in the prenatal environment, and continue to
accumulate throughout life.
Part of the mechanism is the link between parental and child
SES as SES is transmitted from one generation to another. In
addition, social capital appears to come into play with a strong
health protective effect of early intact families.

Adults of higher SES are more likely to have grown up in

childhood homes with better nutrition, fewer health risk
behaviors, safer neighborhoods, and more economic
resources.

CONCEPTIONS OF HEALTH AND THEIR

RELATIONSHIP TO SOCIOECONOMIC
STATUS AND RACE/ETHNICITY
the stage at which a
disease or condition is
clinically recognized
and reported can vary
with the use of health
care, which is related to
the availability of
health insurance and to
health care habits.

Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic differences are

greater in some dimensions of health and from
some causes than others. For example, black
men have higher death rates from heart
disease than white men

BEHAVIOR

Background
Behavior is a combination of genes and
environment.
50-70% of behavior is a result of the
environment.
Genes can be turn on or shut of by
environmental factors such as stress or nutrition.
These switches can strengthen or impair
aggression, immune function, learning, and
memory.

Secure and Anxious

Attachments
Many children living in poverty face emotional and social
instability due to anxious attachments that are formed as
infants. Children need to have secure attachments for
healthy exploration, learning and optimal brain
development. Anxious attachments can lead to
developmental problems.
In order to grow up emotionally healthy, children under the
age of 3 NEED:
1. A strong, reliable primary caregiver that provides
consistent love, guidance, and support.
2. A safe and predictable environment.
3. 10-20 hours a week of attunement
4. Enrichment through personalized and complex activities
Children living in poverty are less likely to have these
needs met.

Behavior in School
Kids who grow up with emotional problems
due to low SES may not handle situations as
logical as those who are emotionally healthy.
For example, children with emotional
problems can get frustrated during
schoolwork and might give up and not finish
their work. Also, children with these
emotional problems may not work well with
others in cooperative groups.

CRIME

SOCIOECONOMIC
STATUS AND CRIME
Socioeconomic status (SES) is often measured as a
combination of education, income, and occupation.
It is commonly conceptualized as the social standing
or class of an individual or group. When viewed
through a social class lens, privilege, power, and
control are emphasized. Furthermore, an
examination of SES as a gradient or continuous
variable reveals inequities in access to and
distribution of resources. SES is relevant to all
realms of behavioral and social science, including
research, practice, education, and advocacy.

Does race exist

The question that comes to mind when
going more into this topic is that does race
exist in this issue. When looking at the
children of color(African American/black,
Latino, and Asian or Pacific Islander) verse
white children there can be some things
that stand out. However the first thing is
that 30% of the US population is of color
and are among the fastest growing
populations in the country. Also being one
of the main groups when it goes to crimes
and injustice convictions. So when looking
at the youth at the ages of 10 to 12 years,
children become more morally conscious
and concerned about merit, equity,
advantage, and disadvantage issues.

Another fact
A risk factor for violence in
male black children and is
associated with lower levels of
moral reasoning and
development, empathy, and
perceptions of justice.

Changing the future

We as a country suppose to stand for
Equality yet we stand apart in most
issues but especially in socioeconomic
and crime. The fact and history show that
there is a problem. There is a need for
prevention programs can foster
empowerment and behavioral change in
youth of color.
by acknowledging the consequences of
social inequalities such as racial
discrimination and helping children
address these inequalities on the basis of
the principles of social justice and social
action.
