Instructional Objectives/Student Outcomes

1. Students will identify the three Newton Laws.
2. The students will conduct research and preform a lab based on Newtons
laws.
WV CSOs
S.7.PS.6
S.7.PS.7

Students will apply Newtons Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving the motion of two
Students will plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an objects motion depends o
forces on the object and the mass of the object.

National Standards
MS-PS2-1
Apply Newtons Third Law to design a solution to a problem involving
the motion of two colliding objects.
RST.6-8.3
Follow precisely a multistep procedure when carrying out experiments,
taking measurements, or performing technical tasks.
7.EE.B.4
Use variables to represent quantities in a real-world or mathematical
problem, and construct simple equations and inequalities to solve problems by
reasoning about the quantities.
Management Framework
Overall Time-

90 minute lesson

Time Frame- 5 Minute Bell Ringer

10 Minute Introduction, Review of Material, and YouTube Introduction
15 Minute Prezi Presentation with Notetaking Guide
5 Minute Demonstration of Balloon Car Lab
50 Minute Third Law Lab
5 Minute Regroup, Assign Take Home Expectations, and Conclude
Strategies
Teacher guided instruction, teacher modeling, teacher demonstration, Visual aidvideo, slideshow, worksheets, scaffolding, group and independent reflection.

Differentiated Instruction/ Adaptations/ Interventions

I will accommodate multiple different learning styles by incorporating multiple
methods. I will go over the expectations of the day, assignments, and review of
material by instructing them verbally. I will give them a guide with written
instructions to refer to during the lab outside. If any questions arise or assistance is
needed, I will be walking around the room during all activities including the physics
lab and note-taking guide. Students are able to discuss with another to ensure they
understand the concepts and the Newtons law lab. The grading scale will be
modified additional time to complete assignments will be given for students whose
IEPs require it. I will abide by each individual IEP to ensure I am offering the
appropriate plans in place for them.
Procedures
Introduction/Lesson Set
Bell Ringer: What is energy? What is Velocity? How do these influence your daily
life?
Review the previous days topic of velocity, energy, and speed to ensure everyone
retained the information and can explain in detail how and why these are vital for
the laws of motion.
YouTube Video/Introduce Newtons Three Laws
http://youtu.be/JGO_zDWmkvk
I will define Newtons Three Laws and explain their relationship. I will
visually display this on the smart board.

*Use a real life example of space vs. earth, cars, and crashing into wall.
Demonstrate the Three Newton Laws via Prezi.
Body and Transitions
I will then pass out the note-taking guide that accompanies the Prezi.

*Ask for questions at the end of presentation.

The lab/activity is an application of the information that they have just went over
in class. I will demonstrate the expectations of the lab to ensure everyone
understands the expected outcome.
For the duration of the lab done in pairs, I will walk around the room to ensure the
class they can ask me questions they do not understand or are struggling with. I will
also provide a lab guide to assist the class in the lab. They will have the opportunity
2

to use them and record their findings. The class will record the results in the
respected boxes on the lab guide they were given.

Closure
The class will clean up their lab supplies and instruments and return to the
classroom. I will make sure the lab areas are clean, the lab guides are completed,
and answer any additional questions.
The lab will be summarized as a group to conclude that the class got the same
results and understands why they are the way they are.
Assessment
Diagnostic
To assess prior knowledge, I will start the bell ringer about clouds to conclude that
they can recall the material that has been taught for a week. We will then start on
the smartboard slideshow and notes that the class will take on the new information.
I will make sure that everyone is participating and offering answers relating to the
new content (Objective 1).
Formative
The students will complete the guide on Newtons Laws to apply the knowledge that
was covered on the Smartboard (Objective 1). I will walk around to ensure the class
is on task and making myself available for questions.
Summative
During the closure of the lesson, I will collect the lab. The lab guide will be
completed with their findings about Newtons Third Law (Objective 2).
Materials
Smartboard, pencil, paper, notebook, note taking work sheet, physics lab guide, and
balloon car instruments:

Car

Balance

Balloons

Meter Stick

Timer

Extended Handout
If Student Finishes Early

If students finish early, the students may look on their devices for a
demonstration of Newtons Three Laws in action.
If Lesson Finishes Early
The students will write a paragraph to summarize their results found
during the lab.

If Technology Fails
I can use the whiteboard instead of the smartboard if technology fails
to introduce these new concepts. I could also print out the slideshow so each
student has their own copy to follow and take notes from. Since the lab does not
require technology, the students can observe with their eyes and ears just as they
normally would.
