SMART SNACKING
SOLUTIONS
THE POWER OF PROTEIN
Even the healthiest eaters can have a tough time making smart
snacking choices when life and work are moving at marathon speeds.
Nationally recognized nutrition expert Heather Bauer arms individuals
with tools to conquer common nutritional dilemmas.
Check out Heathers expert advice for the women of our brand
ambassador networkthe Womens Health Action Heroesand take
away protein-powered tips to help you snack smarter.

Heathers tip:
Having a snack that has a natural source of protein
and tastes delicious makes it easier to keep your eyes
of the tempting treats. Since the best part about
pizza is the cheese, why not skip the heartburn and
have a Sargento cheese snack instead? With 4 to 8
grams of protein and 14 varieties, its a tasty addition
to everyday wholesome snacking that will keep you
satised between meals.
Heathers tip:
Snacking right when youre on the move is all about
nding natural sources of protein that are easy to grab
and go. Skip the potato chips and candy bars and reach
for a serving size of almonds with 6 grams of protein or
a piece of Sargento Natural String Cheese with even
more (8 grams). Not only is Sargento conveniently
packaged, but it will help you stay fueled through the
longest of days.
WHEN IT COMES
TO PROTEIN,

A FIX FOR
PATCHY BROWS
Pencils and powders are great for beefing up sparse arches
but if your brows are seriously thinning, the new Toppik
Brow Building Fibers Set ($20, toppik.com) is a more onpoint fix. Its pigmented keratin fibers are microscopically
ridged and statically charged, so they cling to existing
brow strands in a crosshatch pattern, truly camouflaging
holes in between until you wash them off. Previously,
brow fillers were available only in shiny, unrealistic-looking
gel formulas, but these loose fibers deliver natural 3-D thickness
you can build gradually, says cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos.

The Takeaway
In 2008, researchers
showed that people

ACNE
You can nd the dynamic ingredient duosalicylic
acid and benzoyl peroxidefrom Target to
Nordstrom. Theyre not expensive ingredients; the
diference is that, in high-end brands, theyre
released more slowly into the skin and mixed with
hydrators, says dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D.
Meaning: less-drying results for your face.
Now, yay, a few budget brands ofer the same!
ZIT ZAPPER
Clean & Clear Advantage
Acne Spot Treatment
($6.49, at Walmart) The
2 percent salicylic acid
is balanced with hydrating
glycerin and natural
astringents like cedar bark.
My patients love it because
it smooths on easily and
takes down redness and
swelling, but it doesnt
make their skinand
makeupaky the next
day, says Bowe.
WEEKLY EXFOLIANT
Bior Acne Clearing Scrub ($7, at drugstores) My acne
patients have used scrubs that left their skin bleeding, says
Bowe. (Ouch!) While its essential to slough of the dead
cells gunking up your pores, you dont want to actually
rupture zits (an open wound takes longer to heal). This
exfoliators delicate particles (and 1 percent salicylic acid)
do the job with kid gloves. My patients swear its better
than some of the expensive scrubs.
WRINKLES
Sometimes, the only thing jacking
up the price of a luxe anti-aging
cream is the hefty glass jar. Not to
mention that mass-market brands
are known for putting a ton of
money and resources into the
research and development of their
formulas. The other boon for your
bank account? Less is more. My
patients tend to overdo it, using too
many products in their regimen,
says Jeannette Graf, M.D., a clinical
assistant professor of dermatology
at Mount Sinai Medical Center in
New York City. You dont need all
that. Here, what you do.

ANTIOXIDANT SERUM

Nutrition Advanced Skin Repair
Serum ($20, at drugstores)
I like that this serum has soy
proteinits a great antioxidant
that helps repair wrinkle-causing
cell damage, says Graf. Its
also packed with skin-plumping
lipids called ceramides. (A new
way of extracting lipids from
plant sources have made
ceramides more afordable, she
says.) Slather on in the morning
under sunscreen.

Treatment ($6.49, avon.com)
How you treat your skin
today can impact how it
looks three months from

for a microscopic clogged
pore to turn into a pimple,
says Bowe. This cream
contains 2 percent sal acid
(the highest OTC level) and
soothing green tea. Apply a
thin layer all over every night.

ROSACEA
CALMING WASH
Eucerin Redness Relief Soothing
Cleanser ($10, at drugstores)
When you have rosacea, just
washing your face could be
enough to make you see
red. The combo of massaging
your skin and warm water can
dilate blood vessels, says
Bowe. Laced with licorice root
extract, an anti-inammatory
that can stabilize those blood
vessels, this gel cleanser
wont cause the angry
post-wash ush.
REDNESS-REDUCING
NIGHT CREAM
Aveeno Ultra-Calming
Nourishing Night Cream ($15,
drugstore.com) This is one of
the few mass-market brands that
ofers feverfew extract, which
studies say can pacify ery
patches. If you just rubbed the
plant on your skin, it might
cause irritation, says Bowe. The
scientists at Aveeno removed
the ofending part, then added
glycerin and dimethicone to
help strengthen skins barrier.
NONIRRITATING SUNSCREEN
Cetaphil DermaControl Moisturizer SPF 30 ($20, at drugstores) Its a
calm-skin catch-22: Sun exposure inames rosacea, but sunscreen
can too. This formula uses Oleosome technology, which means it
has lower concentrations of sunscreen ingredients but still provides
an efective broad-spectrum SPF 30. My rosacea patients tell me
this is the only sunscreen they can tolerate, says Bowe. That same
UV-protective zinc also boosts skins barrier function.
DARK SPOTS
Like Olivia Pope
and her gladiators,
pigment attackers
work best in a team.
Brighteners and skin
sloughers are often
bottled together
to make a more
potent treatment; as
Graf explains, the
exfoliants remove
pigment on skins
surface and allow the
brighteners to
penetrate more
efectively. But that
can cause irritation if
you pile on multiple
products at once.
Graf suggests using
one daily treatment
(apply it once a day at
rst, working up to
twice daily after a
week), under your
moisturizer, with a
weekly mask as a
bonus brightener.
50
DAILY FADER
Ambi Fade Cream ($7, at
drugstores) Hydroquinone,
which blocks the pigmentstimulating enzyme tyrosinase,
is the most efective OTC skin
lightener. This cream pairs 2
percent hydroquinone (the
OTC max) with exfoliating alpha
hydroxy acids and a UV lter
(extra protectionwoot!). And
good news: It wont bleach out
darker skin tones, which are
more prone to pigment issues.
BRIGHTENING SUNSCREEN
Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily
Moisturizer SPF 30 ($15, at
drugstores) Sunscreen is
essential, since the sun can
create more spots, says Graf.
This SPF 30 cream also contains
nonfermented soy enzymes that
may stop pigment from coming
to skins surface. But not to
worry about overkill: Soy
knows how to play nicely with
other fading ingredients without
causing irritation.
WEEKLY MASK
Masque Bar by Look Beauty Brightening Sheet Mask
($10, target.com) Sheet masks typically have high concentrations
of ingredients in them (in this case, a pigment-lightening trio of
vitamin C, orange extract, and licorice root extract), and the cotton
sheet design helps drive them into the skin, says Graf. The
moisturizing and soothing hyaluronic acid and glycerin in this sheet
will help prevent your skin from going postal. Q
Virtual
Realities
Budget pros share their
best tricks for scoring
online skin deals.
1.
Time it right. Shopping
deal sites like RetailMeNot
.com keep tabs on the best
times to save a buck.
According to the site, great
skin-care sales spike
the rst week of May
(averaging 54 percent off)
and the second week of
August (nearing
50 percent off).
2.
Leave a digital trail. Most
online retailers use tracking
technology, so use it to
your advantage, says Trae
Bodge, shopping expert at
TraeBodge.com. Put that
pricey cream in your cart,
but dont buy it just yet, she
says. Wait a day or two;
you may get an e-mail or
see a promo pop up on
Facebook with an incentive
to close the deal.
3.
Go off-site. Before you buy,
check out cash-back sites
such as Ebates.com or
ShopAtHome.com to see if
the beauty retailer is a
partner, says Miranda
Mendoza, founder of
SlashedBeauty.com. These
sites give you money
backanywhere from
2 to 10 percent based on
where you shopped. (In
turn, they get a commission
for sending you to the
shopping site to buy.)
4.
Give feedback. Some sites
will pay you to tell them
what you think about past
purchases. The beauty
retailer Birchbox.com gives
subscribers 10 points for
every sample they review.
Weigh in on your entire
monthly box and earn 50
points, the equivalent of
$5, which can be used
toward the purchase of a
full-size product.
Minimalism: fashion
trend and, apparently,
redness reducer. The
fewer ingredients
you put on this type
of skin, the better,
says Bowe, a clinical
assistant professor
of dermatology
at Mount Sinai
Medical Center.
Your skins barrier is
compromised, so
moisture can get out
and allergens and
irritants can get in.
What you want
barrier-strengthening
hydrators and
anti-inammatories
are just as important
as what you dont:
triggers like scent,
mint or eucalyptus
oils, and alcohol. But
dont buy a whole
new regimen. Try one
product at a time for
two weeks, then add.

BEST-LAID PLANS
Political soirees aside, Christinas schedule is
ramping way up: At the time of the interview, she
was busy taping the blind auditions for her return
to The Voice (season 10 begins airing February 29)
while writing and recording her new album with
fellow Voice coach Pharrell Williams, among
others. While its been three years since her last
release (the tepidly received Lotus), shes

CENTERED STAGE
Its taken a lot of time,
introspection, and, yes,
forgiveness for Christina
to reach this turning point,
where everything is nally
falling back into place. It
started with ensuring she
and ex-husband Jordan
Bratman could remain
friends and happily share
custody of their son. I
never wanted Max to be
around arguing
or unnecessary discomfort,
says Christina, alluding
to the alleged domestic
abuse she grew up around.
I could be bitter about my
childhood, but if anything,
Im thankful that I have
that experience. I know
my bigger purpose is to
empower, to encourage
other people to nd their
voice. Through her new
music and her yoga practice,
Christina has rediscovered
her own too. My whole life
has been about ght or
ight, but yoga has helped
me to appreciate the
moment and be okay with
the now, she says. No
matter what chaos is around
me, it gets me back into my
body. [Ive learned that] the
stronger you get within
yourself, everything else
just bounces of. Q

HEALS:
HEAT
THERAPY
THE LONG-TIME HEAT THERAPY TECHNIQUE THAT HAS BEEN
USED BY WOMEN FOR PAIN RELIEF IS MAKING A COMEBACK.
DISCOVER THE RELIEF AND HEALING YOUVE BEEN LOOKING
FOR WITH INNOVATIVE THERMACARE HEATWRAPS.
Heat therapy has been used for
centuries to combat womens
backaches, muscle pain, joint
pain and more. Its effectiveness
lies in its ability to penetrate
deep into the muscle right where
it hurts, to relax, soothe and
unlock tight muscles.
Clinical studies show the use of
continuous low-level heat therapy,
like that found in ThermaCare
HeatWraps, can be effective
for some pain management.
ThermaCare patented heat cell
Use As Directed.
Unlike creams and rubs that mask the pain, ThermaCare has patented
heat cells that penetrate deep to increase circulation and accelerate healing.

MID-BACK
Breathing: Its both
culprit and cure. Quick,
shallow inhales and
exhales dont engage
the muscles around
your central spine,
leaving it unsupported
and sore. The harm can
happen suddenly or
over months or years.
Your move: Practice
deep belly breathing
until its second nature.
UPPER PELVIS
Sitting disease is the
new smoking, but a
standing desk can put
just as much pressure
on your backs disks if
youre on your feet
24/7. Alternate sitting
and standing every half
hour, then stretch for
30 seconds every hour
to ease tension where
your back meets your
pelvic bones.
SHOULDERS
Nothing hammers
this area like an It
bagor the wrong
bra. If youre rocking
spaghetti-width straps
(especially C cups and
larger), a small section
on each shoulder bears
the entire weight of
your boobs, causing
pain and throwing
of posture. Go for
thicker (at least
half-inch) straps.
LOWER BACK
Stuf you already
know isnt lowerlumbar friendly: high
heels, excess lbs. But
skinny jeans? Nooooo!
Their constricting
t alters your stride,
which stresses the
joints in your back.
You dont have to
perma-shelve your
favorite pair; just work
looser, boyfriend-style
types into the rotation.

Group On!
One is more than the loneliest number
its potentially the unhealthiest. Time
to embrace a pack mentality.
Remember day care? Okay, probably not. How about science fairs? Carpools? Your gradeschool soccer team? Chances are, most kid activities you can recall have one thing in common
groups. For good reason: We are a social species, says psychologist Tristen Inagaki, Ph.D., a
professor at the University of Pittsburgh. We have evolved to rely on, to need, other people.
And not just for basic survival. Romantic relationships aside, having a few supportive pals
boosts happiness, and new research in the eld of emotional synchrony (a.k.a. our social and
emotional ties to each other) shows hanging in larger packswhether its a 20-person cycling

Tips: Aprils
strategies for crushing it
AFTER
145 lbs
APRIL ALEXANDER was
raised by a mom who
cooked fresh, balanced
meals. Then came middle
school, where bullying
led April to gorge on
junk food. A disdain of
gym class and sports,
compounded by her
poor diet, brought Aprils
weight to more than
200 pounds by age 16.
Throughout high school
and college, and well
into her career as a
government contractor,
she flip-flopped between
binge eating and stints
of calorie deprivation.
In 2013, the then 30-yearold Virginia resident
balked when the scale
tipped 240 pounds,
but it took a double
whammy of life events
for her to actually
prioritize her health.
Start simple.
I like using resistance bands
with clients who are just
beginning to lift. It helps with
form and strengthens muscles.
October 2013
After losing her job in June, April loses her mother to a heart
attack, which spurs her to nally change her habits. She starts eating
organic, ditches processed carbs, and tracks her meals to shed
58 pounds in six months.

Were at a place in history where, when a woman speaks out, she has the power to
change things. After the Sony hacks leaked how much male actors were making,
Jennifer Lawrence and Charlize Theron both asked for (and received) equal pay.
Its unfortunate how they found out, but at least it resulted in parity, and in a public
way. Women have to ask for what they want, and then be prepared to explain why
they deserve it. Men usually dont have to do either. But rather than bemoaning all
the unfair advantages, lets be proactive.
And lets be kinder to each other. When I rst started doing stand-up, one of my
closest girlfriends landed a big agent and television deal at NBC. I was jealous and
ashamed of being so. I felt I was the one who worked harder and so clearly wanted
it more. My sister, who is an attorney, told me it was natural to be jealous. Then she
said, Acknowledge it, embrace it, but never act on it.
You can have feelings of competitiveness or jealousy with other women, but the
biggest favor we can do to help each other is to move out of the way. Make the path
bigger for all of us. No one can steal something that was never yours. When we make
room for others, a new direction we hadnt yet considered opens up. Let yourself be
good simply for the sake of it, and see where that takes you. Lets lift each other up
so that in 50 years, men will be asked how hard it is to be a man in a womans game.

BOOT CAMP,
REBOOTED
When you think of military workouts, what comes to mind? Demi Moore as GI Jane cranking out
endless pushups? Recruits crawling through barbed-wire mud pits or climbing over sky-high walls? No
doubt, military trainingor boot camp, as it is broadly knownhas long been synonymous with bodyweight exercises performed to complete exhaustion. But basic training is moving beyond the cinematic
drill-sergeant clich, says Tee Major, our stud of an instructor. So rather than, say, test upper-body
strength with pushups or endurance with a long run, todays troops are getting tougher by being smarter:
Theyre incorporating mobility exercises, speed work, and explosive power moves, all designed to make
them stronger, faster, less fatigued, and less prone to injury. Were training our military more like top
athletes, says Major. We still need to keep them on their toes and improve physical and mental
toughness, but its more about building them upnot breaking them down.
Whats in it for you? This total-body routine, which Tee created exclusively for WH. Its how he trains
his everyday military athletes (i.e., those not currently deployed), as well as troops in areas with limited
resources. Your biggest opponent here: the clock. By using the stress of a 30-minute time limit, this
workout requires you to stay focused and grit through those moments when you want to give up.
Two or three times a week, perform the exercises in the order instructed as one circuit. Your mission:
Complete three rounds in 30 minutes or less. Youll need to move quickly, stopping to rest only when
absolutely necessary. But the payoff is worth ita more exible, more powerful, more sculpted you.

Social battles are really about expressing (and meeting) each others needs for time

last week? Totally worth it!). Rather than trying to control his purchases, tell him how much youve been looking forward to a romantic

These numbersand the divorce initiation gapdont prove that men are happier in
marriage. But they do suggest that women are more willing to do something about it if
they are unhappy, says Doyle. Her theory as to why: Women are routinely evaluating the
ups and downs of their relationships to decide whether or not their romantic investments
are paying of emotionally. Men, on the other hand, tend to compartmentalize issues,
so one major pain pointwhile it may cause them emotional stressis less likely to doom
the entire relationship. Men will continue to try to make their partners happy, even if
theyre not succeeding, explains Doyle. Now, lets bring it all full circle, folks! This is why,
when an argument does happen (despite our best eforts on these pages!), couples
need to be clear and direct about what they need, emotionally and physically, to consider
the issue resolved. This provides your man with a road map to a clear solution, and you
with the reassurance that the benets of your bond far outweigh the speed bumps.

OFFICE DRAMA
Are you lazy or just incompetent? Thats one of the zingers
Amazon CEO Jef Bezos has hurled at employees. Sure, hes been
called a jerk, just as Steve Jobs was, but both men are largely
lauded for their accomplishmentstheir outbursts justied as
necessary to get results. If a woman takes decisive action to
improve the bottom linesuch as when Jennifer Hyman,
cofounder and CEO of Rent the Runway, made organizational
changes that led to 2 percent of her employees leavingthe
criticisms are framed as personality problems rather than
eccentric genius characterizations. In Hymans case, stories of
former stafers sufering from PTSD even surfaced in the press,
overshadowing her bold leadership.
Dubbed the likability bias, its a sad fact that while success and
likability are linked for men, they are negatively correlated for
women. A man can assert himself and be labeled condent or
strong, while even in 2016, an
assertive woman is called
ballbuster or bitchy.
Contradictions much?
However unintentionally, we
women feed into and uphold
these stereotypes: A Gallup poll
found that 40 percent of us
prefer a male boss, compared
with 27 percent whod opt
for a female. But heres the
data-driven trutha review of
over 80 studies from
Northwestern University found
that men and women can be
equally efective leaders, with
women being particularly
efective at the helm of
female-dominated enterprises.
If youve had either B-word

sometimes strong women (whove been told theyre too strong)

Common Questions,
Real Answers
What exactly is a
miscarriage?
In medical terms, its
a spontaneous loss of
pregnancy before
20weeks (after that, its
called a stillbirth). The
majority are caused by
random chromosomal
awsparts of embryo
genes that are missing,
damaged, or in the
wrong place. Often,
the rst signs youre
miscarrying are
bleeding and cramping,
which happen as the
uterus contracts and
empties itself. That said,
some women have no
symptoms and discover
a miscarriage only when
an ultrasound shows the
fetus has no heartbeat.
In such cases, a doctor
may need to surgically
clear out the uterus
with a procedure called
a D&C (see No More
TMI, page 177).
I miscarried a few
months back. Will it
happen again?
One miscarriage doesnt
up your risk for another.
A full 95 percent of
women who miscarried
a single time, and
70 percent of women
who lost two or more
pregnancies, go on to
have healthy babies. If
youve had three or
more miscarriages,
your doctor may want
to test for genetic,
hormonal, or immunesystem problems.
Nope.
Day-to-day exposure to
these chemicals (found in
many plastics) is linked to an
elevated miscarriage rate before
13 weeks, new research nds.
What you can do: Switch to
products marked phthalate-free;
eat fresh foods (theyre less
likely to be covered in plastic wrap
or packaging); and avoid plastic
products labeled V or PVC.
UNTREATED MEDICAL
CONDITIONS
Endometriosis (a common
gyno disorder), high blood sugar,
diabetes, and thyroid disease can all
hamper proper development of
the uterine lining, making it hard for
an embryo to implant and grow.
What you can do: If youve had
multiple miscarriages, ask your obgyn to check for these ailments, which
can often be controlled with Rx meds.
175
Couples who
miscarry are 22
percent more likely
to split than those
who have successful
pregnancies. Heres
how to help your
relationship survive.
A miscarriage unites some
pairsand tears others
apart. A woman may
feel like her partner cant
truly understand her
experience, and recede
into herself, says
psychiatrist Amanda
Itzkoff, M.D. This can make
signicant others feel as
if theyve lost a spouse as
well as a pregnancy,
especially if the would-be
birth mother starts to
shy away from sex out of
fear of miscarrying again,
or because intimacy
reminds her of how she
got pregnant in the
rst place. Conicts can
also arise when a duo
has mismatched coping
methods (e.g., one
person is outwardly sad
and the other deals with
it more privately).
Then theres the blame
factor. The miscarrying
woman may fault her
body for failing her; her
partner may assign blame
(You shouldnt have been
working out). Both can
breed resentment.
Be aware that you and
your partner may process
grief differently and may
not always be in the same
place at the same time.
If you are ghting or
feel disconnected, or if
your sex drive doesnt
bounce back in a month
or two, you may want to
try couples counseling
even just one session,
says Itzkoff. Particularly if
youve been referred for
genetic testing, therapy
can be crucial in helping
deal with any emotional
fallout or the news that
one or both parties has a
genetic issue.

PHYSICAL
EMOTIONAL
If an ultrasound conrms
that youve miscarried, stock
up on pads (no tampons or
menstrual cupsthey can
introduce bacteria to your
open cervix) and ibuprofen.
If youre around six or fewer
weeks along, your body
will likely expel fetal and
placental tissue on its own.
It will look and feel like a very
heavy period with cramping
that can range from light to
labor-like contractions that
can last up to three weeks.
For later miscarriages, losses
that dont resolve on their
own, and miscarriages in
which all pregnancy-related
tissue doesnt come out
(your doc can gure this out
with a blood test), youll need
a dilation and curettage,
known as a D&C. During this
outpatient procedure, youll
be given anesthesia, and
your OB will dilate your
cervix and clean out your
uterus. Afterward, unless
theres a rare complication,
most women experience a
few days of light spotting and
minor cramping.
After most pregnancy
losses, its safe to try again as
soon as you get your next
period (usually within a
month of the miscarriage),
with no increased risk of
miscarrying again. But as
always, get the green light
from your OB rst.

SNACK ON SOCIAL
MEDIA
OKAY, CAN WE
THE ECONOMY
WHAT YOU HEAR: Einstein idea:
Instead of blowing the budget on wars,
how about spending it on creating jobs?
THE REALITY: One viral (and false)
news item claimed 57 percent of the
federal budget goes to the military. But
the U.S. spends more money on both
Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid.
WHAT TO SAY: Spending needs to
be capped, yes, but its just as crucial to
consider the global economys impact
(e.g., China) on future job growth.
GUN VIOLENCE
WHAT YOU HEAR: We need
background checks and gun control!
THE REALITY: The majority of
Americans agree that universal
background checks are necessary, but in
a national survey, 40 percent of prison
inmates admitted they got their weapons
from the black market. Others got them
from friends and family.
WHAT TO SAY: Background checks
could help, but we also need additional
regulation methods and initiatives that
explore the mental health issues that
often lead to such violence.
TERRORISM
Raised voices? Passive-aggressive digs? Not happening!
Treat it like a discovery,
not a face-off.
