Executive summary

According to the statistics of solid waste by the Department of Environment, Park


and Recreation in (JASTRE) 2005-2006, entire Brunei generates 189,000 tonnes
of waste per year or 518 tonnes per day, or around 1.4 kg per person per day or
almost 511 kg per person per year. This number in 2030, with the assumption
that the growth of solid waste production in line with the population at around
2.73 per cent, will be increasing up to 370,000 tonnes. The composition of the
waste in Brunei is 36% food scraps, 18% paper, 16% plastics, 6% yard waste, 6%
diapers, 5% others, 4% metals, 3% glass and 2% textiles, 1% wood, 1%
electronic waste, 1% rubber and 1% inert. In other words the waste materials are
expected to increase each year.
Brunei government including NGOs has implemented various measures and
awareness activities to minimise waste disposal which the whole idea is consist
of 3Rs reduce, reuse and recycle but still majority people are not fully exposed
and educated to use the 3Rs in their everyday life. This problem will become
serious for future generations if taken lightly such that there will be so many
landfills since Brunei has limited land. In order to create another way of social
responsibility in Bruneians, we are planning to set up a creative and innovative
industry to produce home decorations products from recycled materials and
various services. As the concept is taken from an idiom one mans trash is
another mans treasure, we are strived to be a social enterprise which not only
focus on getting profit but also consciously to educate society on the 3Rs and
also support recycling industries.
The main business idea is to revalue and repurpose recycled materials that
require a slight modifications to become another useful purposes to sell at
affordable prices for example used papers can be turn into a basket, plastic
bottles can be modified into a lamp and so much more. What we are actually
selling is basically the creativity and innovatively ideas which turn from nothing
into something. We are strategically focusing on home dcor product lines at
start-up because it is easier and faster to make. There will be a business website
that displays our various products and information about other services as well.
Each of the products will have story on how it being made and what recycled
material is being used. The websites will be regularly update on our activities or
events.
Our main target market will be education centres such as schools and
universities because we offer services to teach students on how to make various
handmade accessories from recycled materials and also educate them on 3Rs.
This service will be free when the schools and universities buy our products at
required amount. Every year, new young kids will attend school therefore there is
positive possibilities the cycle of educating them will be go on hence they will
need more of our services and profit generates is there as well as business
sustainability. We also have special order request which customers can ask us to
create different products. We will occasionally organize events to create

There are competitors out there such as other home dcor and furniture
businesses that might become a wall for us to grow in creative businesses but
our social purpose is the strong point of our business identity to strive for better
future by educating people to minimise waste and recycle. The other benefit
such that not only customers are unconsciously supporting recycling industries
but they also can save their money on buying cheap, creative and useful
affordable products from us.
The most important part to run this business successfully is to have the right
team. The management team is the core of this business to handle the staffs
effectively and efficiently. We, partners will be the one who manage and divide
tasks to our employees. We will need to employ artisans who are good at arts
and crafting that will contribute most creative and innovative ideas for
productions. In Brunei, majority unemployment graduates comes from art
background therefore it is an opportunity for us to employ and create the strong
team. For the production team, we will label it as part-time jobs as we will hire
accordingly to the market demands. All of the products will be produce by
handmade.
The supplier for the recycle materials, we will form strategic alliances with
recycling industries such as Daikyo Environmental Recycling Sdn. Bhd, Sallima
Recycling Works and many others that will provide us the required materials.
According to our estimation calculation the start-up capital required to run the
business is approximately BND$250000. The capital use to cover up business
expenses mostly goes to wages.
In conclusion we hope that Bruneian will use 3Rs in their everyday life as well as
support recycling industries and to ensure better future for young generations. In
the future, we would like to expand our business to do landscaping using
recycled materials after we successfully obtain our initial objectives.
