Cycle Tour Trip Plan

The goal of this trip is to take 5 cyclists on a 6-day cross-country cycle tour. Our goal is to
approach the trip planning process as if our guests are paying clients, taking all aspects
of the trip into consideration to create the best experience possible. We are considering
offering this as a commercial trip to help link the town of Pembroke and Algonquin
Provincial Park together.
3. Activities
- Cycling
- Camping
- Minor Hiking
4. Locations
Geography: The cycling trip starts North of Ottawa, ON in the small town of Pembroke,
ON. This region, known as the Ottawa Valley, has a large web of paved roads ideal for
long distance cycling. This trip relies heavily on Highway 60 to travel from Pembroke to
the half-way point, Kearney Lake Campground, to keep the group close to towns,
hospitals, and grocery stores. The return trip will simply involve retracing the first 3 days
route back to Pembroke.
Information Sources: A major hurdle was finding land use information on parcels of crown
land between Kearney Lake and Pembroke to camp on. The Crown Land Use Policy Atlas,
created by the Ontario Government, provides specific information on what activities are
allowed on specific crown land. The website accessed is:
https://www.ontario.ca/environment-and-energy/crown-land-use-policy-atlas.
Information on Kearney Lake Campground was taken from Friends of Algonquin Park and
Parks Canada. Details on booking a campsite at Kearney Lake are found below.
Permits: Kearney Lake Campground permits can be reserved up to 5-months in advance
by calling 1-888-668-7275. Booking a un-serviced site for 2 tents will cost the group
$43.00, and should be purchased by March 1st 2015 to ensure availability. The group will
first go to Pog Lake Campground to sign in, any time after 2:00pm on July 3rd.
Pog Lake Campground: West on Highway 60. Register at Pog Lake Campground:
(453401.8N 782621.5W) 2km gravel road in off highway.
Kearney Lake Campground Algonquin Provincial Park. (453419.3N 782631.9W)
Weather Conditions: The following predictions are taken from climate.weather.gc.ca over
the past 3 years in the Ottawa Valley region.
Temperature: 20C - 28C
Wind Speeds: <20km/h
Humidity: 20% - 80%

5.4 Alternate Routes / Camps
As this cycling trip is our first planned, multi-day trip, we chose a route with limited
alternative routes to keep things as simple as possible. Our trip plan sticks to Highway 60
for 75% of the way to keep close to towns and possible emergency stops along the way.
There is only one alternative route available, which is described below.
First and Final Leg of Trip: Pembroke to Deacon Escarpment Conservation Area / and
returning route.
- If taking Red Rock Road East of Round Lake no longer becomes an option, we have the
ability to follow Highway 60 towards Eganville and then Highway 41 North into
Pembroke. This route can also be taken in reverse during the first day of the cycling trip.
Alternative Camp Sites by Section:
Section 1: Bonnecherre Provincial Park (Round Lake) 45.661471, -77.575978
Section 2: Bevaline Cottage Resort: 20563 Highway 60, Barry's Bay, ON K0J 1B0,
Canada. Phone: +1 613-756-2614
Section 3: Barkwick Camp: 24423 highway 60, Madawaska, ON K0J 2C0, Canada.
Phone: +1 613-637-5541
* See Figure 1: Trip Map for alternative route to avoid Highway 58.
6. Participants
The cycling trip is designed as an introduction to touring for a group of four, which
includes the two guides in training, Caroline and Miles. We are assuming the two clients,
who in this case are friends, have experience cycling 60-80km comfortably and have
some solid personal gear (outlined in Chapter 7- Equipment). The participant info is
simplified below:
Number of Participants: 2
Number of Guides: 2
Experience Level: Novice Cyclists, 60-80km comfortably.

Use sunscreen, cover up, and avoid prolonged

Continually monitor conditions, avoid exposed areas
when weather threatens. Take shelter using 30/30
guideline.
Plan itinerary with extra time if high winds are
expected. Wait out thunderstorms. Avoid intense travel
during midday.
Ensure proper tools are brought with group gear. If
part cant be replaced find closest bike shop or contact

In emergency ride out to nearest grocery store found in
ERP
Ensure proper road safety rules are followed. Stay to
shoulder of road. Wear reflective wear at all times on
front and back. Flashing lights must be on front and
back of bike one hour after sunrise and one hour
before sunset.
Critter proof campsite. Hang food. Dont camp in
terrain traps especially in areas known for bear
problems.

Know and follow rules. If you dont agree ask for

justification.
Review your pre-trip info. Ask if youre unsure of
something. Attend pre-trip meetings and prep sessions.
Take responsibility!
