BUMP Mountain Bike Clinic

To promote interest and introduce individuals to mountain biking, BUMP is planning a couple of one-day clinics. These are scheduled for Saturday, January 16 and Sunday, January 24 and follow the busy holiday season. The agenda for each day will be the same, and participants may attend both dates if desired. The clinics will be designed to familiarize all participants with the Red Trail at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL. The clinic is intended to be an introductory session, but all of riders will be accommodated. The objectives of the event are to: Describe basic bicycle components and functions Present basic riding techniques and terminology Introduce BUMP and the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) Describe areas of the Red Trail and the areas of difficulty (Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced) Participate in a group ride for each skill level

Tr4il Work
December 5 - (Oak Mountain Location) It was evident where the next trail workday would concentrate on. The 3rd bridge from the north trailhead in the Cat-Dog-Snake area was the focus. The original log built bridge finally gave way. It was a right-angled, twisted bridge. You know the one, real slick in the rain. Now we have constructed its replacement with good materials. It is smoother and straighter than the original. The group set out to construct a new bridge, and did just that. Bill J., Steve B, Leo H., our new member Keith, and Paul thank you for the efforts. Ken H. and Bill G. worked on the quarry road and general maintenance.
The BUMP Club meets on the first

Start time will be 1:00 pm and expect completion around 4:00. The event is to be sponsored by area shops and BUMP. What BUMP will supply is volunteers to instruct and lead rides, distribution of swag bags and general operation, course maps, and other promo items. The shops will supply swag items, tech support, and general expertise. To make this all happen, BUMP needs your support. We would like to know if you wish to participate, and how you would be able to support the clinic. What kind .of help is needed? We will need volunteers to organize swag bags, distribute bags, sign-in, demonstrations I presentations, ride leader(s), water detail, etc. Several members have expressed interest. If you are interested, please call Derrick at 987-3827. We can all get together to assist the day of the event
Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. at the Hoover Public Library, downstairs.

Check the BUMP Hotline for any changes in dates and time.

Elmore County - SwayBack Ride

An Out of this World experience
By Derrick Seys Wasn't that a ride! That was the common consensus after the beautiful Sunday ride at Elmore County's Swayback Bridge Trail. Was it an out of this world experience? Well, a meteor impacted the area several million years ago. The effects are visible in the rock layers on edge and high quantities of quartz in the area. The locals say you can see the crater outline from the air. It all started last Sunday at McDonalds in Pelham. David, Dan, Colleen, Chris H., Barry, Laura B., Anne, Steve B., Paul, Leo H., Libby, and myself (Derrick) organized our car pools. We left Birmingham and literally picked up Jon and Hendrick along the way. After 85 miles we arrived at the trail and were greeted by Chris Snyder and Johan Beumer of the Elmore County Trail Association. Johan and other locals had recently attended the IMBA / NOC trail construction clinic, and were able to implement their experiences into an excellent new switchback. We split into two groups with the locals leading the way. Chris and Johan pointed out the local trail features to their respective group. We all discovered the trails to be extremely challenging. Loose leaves, a young trail system, and rain the day before made for a trail that tested all of ones technical skills. The trail has some lake overlooks, great downhills, incredible short climbs, and mixed terrain that will definitely get the heart pumping. Chris took his group onto a new section of trial that had been cut just days before. Jon got a little carried away at cutting trail, and tried to plow over a young tree. ;fhe. tree remains, and Jon juv,

took a nice spill over the bars. Chris H. allowed for the second group to catch their breath. The timing of his front tire leak seemed to correspond just right to my physical ability. All total, the trail can consist of approximately 12 miles of riding. Laura Bass delighted everyone with an energizing post-ride sugar boost "wreath". Everyone enjoyed the warm morning ride, and fellowship. We look forward to riding again. Thanks Chris S. and Johan for your guide services and hospitality.

Dear Birmingham Urban Mountain Peds/ers,' We wish to thank you for the generous gift you made to John. We are planning on using these gifts to buy special equipment that John needs and wants. He is doing well, and he now has a hand cycle which he has been riding on the Tour de Wolf trail in Memphis. I don't think he is ready for Oak Mountain, but maybe one day. Thanks, Brenda Payne
