02

A circular concrete column of concrete strength equal to 20 Mpa has a pinned end
length of 8 m and a diameter of 300mm. Find the safe load that can be carried by the
column at an eccentricity of 200 mm by a factor of 3 for no buckling. Also calculate
the strength in axially loaded condition with a factor of safety of 3 against buckling.
The ultimate tensile strength of concrete may be taken equal to 2 Mpa.

Determine the diameter in mm for a solid steel shaft using ASD to transmit 250 hp
at 200 rpm. The maximum shear stress for the material of the shaft is 100Mpa and
the total factor of safety is 2. Also find the twist of the shaft for factored torque over
a length of 1.5m, the load factor is 1.6, G = 76923 Mpa.

center. Find the slope and deflection function in terms of distance Z L/2 starting
from one of the supports.
