main idea and support it with the key points.
The students will write a letter in response to the text they have read while I have read it
aloud. This will allow me to be able to assess their understanding of the standard and the
text.

1. First I will use a large sheet of construction paper to organize

2. Using strips of paper I will ask the students through a
discussion, what the main idea of the topic.
3. I will then have one of them write the sentence we come up
with on the strip of paper.
4. I will continue using this set up for the other types of
sentence for their paragraph; two detail sentences, an
example sentence, and a conclusion sentence.
5. We will then use these strips of paper to create the letter the
groups would have sent to Columbus on the larger sheet.
This allows the student to physically put the type of sentences
together on the page giving them physicality to the experience
of the structure of paragraph writing.
