Module 4
INSTTECH 6232
Digital Citizenship Program for Students, Teachers, and Parents
1. School: Korea Foreign School
2. Grade levels:6-8
3. Student demographics:
-50% female, 50% male
-35 nationalities represented
KFS has a wide ranging demographic of students from across the globe. Students are at
all levels of language (native English speakers to English language learners), technology
awareness, and socio-economic status. We have a small number of students from
countries currently embroiled in conflict who have had very little, if any, exposure to
technology. KFS also has very few technology resources available to students, which can
make using technology in the classroom difficult. To deal with this, teachers often ask
students to bring in their personal devices.
4. Level of Technology Integration used in the classes where this will be taught: Most learners
at KFS are fairly adept at using technology in both their personal lives and as tools for learning.
On the Arizona TIM site, most of them would be somewhere in the middle of the matrix.
Teachers, on the other hand, would be on the far left. Technology, as a whole, is seldom used at
our school as we have very few resources. This is supposed to change by next year though. For
teachers, my goal is to introduce digital citizenship, then basic communication tools (podcasts,
blogs, etc.), and then ethical net practices.
5. Describe your approach for teaching this information. What is your overall philosophy?
My philosophy is that technology can both enhance and detract from a learners school
experience, depending upon how learners are introduced to it. Knowing how to employ
technology safely and effectively is key. My hope is that by starting the year with Common
Sense Media and the host of other sources I found, we can help my students to be advocates for
the safe use of technology, all for the power of good (thanks, Google). Students will be
introduced to basic internet safety, digital citizenship, research skills, and communication
techniques.
Teachers are going to be more receptive to learning about new technology practices if it is
something they can use in their classrooms. We will conduct digital citizenship, research
guidelines, and ethical technology values courses. Training for Parents, who are often

short on time, will be more likely to understand digital citizenship if what they are
learning can be done with their children and connected to what they do in their homes.
Parents will be asked to complete two short online courses, attend one school workshop,
and sign a technology pledge.
6. Instruction Dates: Students and Parents-August 15-30, 2015. The first two weeks of
school will be used to lay the foundation for a successful year of technology use, making
students and parents aware of what will be expected. Lessons will be for one 90 minute
block every other day of the week for students, and online, with one school meeting for
parents.
Teachers- August 1-12. Two weeks prior to the start of the school year, teachers will
receive instruction on how to implement a successful year of technology integration.

Internet
Basics

Mr. D-MS
Social
Studies

As KFS receives students

from across the globe, it
would be unwise for us
to assume that all
students come into our
school with a working
knowledge of the internet
(or even computers).
Thus, students will walk
away from this unit with
a basic understanding of
what the internet is, and
how to safely navigate it.

Safe Connects
from Net
Literacy

This is a very basic

introduction to the
internet, but is
important for a
number of students
coming from countries
where technology is
largely absent (mainly
student from Iraq,
Syria, and
Afghanistan). As a
way for students to
show what they have
learned, I will ask
students to write a
blog using edublogs
about what the
internet means to
them, how it can
benefit them, but how
it can also have a
negative effect on
their lives. By using a
blog as a way to write,
students will be using
the very tools they
discussed throughout
this unit.

5. Digital citizenship
Students understand
human, cultural, and
societal issues related to
technology and practice
legal and ethical
behavior.

safe, legal, and
responsible use of
information and

activity, students will
create a simile using
the phrase My digital

Mr. M-MS
Geography

Students will be able to

search efficiently and
have a strategy to do so.

Strategic
Searching from
Common Sense
Media

The internet is the

most powerful
research tool
available. Yet its
power can also be
overwhelming. With a
vast amount of
information available,
sorting through it to
find the right source
can be difficult.
Students will be asked
to create a
bibliography for a
future research
project, using APA
format and the
following search
engines:
-Google Scholar
-ERIC
-Sweet Search

Safe Online
Talk from
Common Sense
Media

Students are
constantly
commenting on one
anothers blogs and
communicating via
text and video based
apps. I feel its
important to stress
how to talk
professionally and
appropriately to one
another. To show they
can do this, students
will submit
screenshots of their
conversations on
edublog to me via
Kakao talk (Koreas
version of Facebook
messenger). Students

Students will have an in

depth understanding of
academic search tools
available online.
4. Critical thinking,
problem solving, and
decision making
Students use critical
thinking skills to plan
and conduct research,
manage projects, solve
problems, and make
informed decisions using
appropriate digital tools
and resources.
c. Collect and analyze
data to identify solutions
and/or make informed
decisions
