Materials and apparatus
White bread, groundnuts, distilled water, plasticine, boiling tube,
thermometer, measuring cylinder, pin, electronic balance, retord stand,
insulator shield, bunsen burner, cotton wool
Technique
Measuring the amount of heat released in its combustion using thermometer
Procedure
1. A clean and dry boiling tube is filled with 20 cm3 of distilled water
2. The boiling tube with the thermometer is clamped to a retord stand
Precautions
When the food sample is burnt, not all the energy is used to heat
the water. Some of the energy is lost in the form of light and heat
to the surrounding. Some energy is absorbed by the boiling tube
You can used insulator shield to surround the apparatus to reduce
heat loss to the surrounding
To ensure the food is burnt oxidised completely, make sure the
food is burnt completely
