Objectives:

Students will discuss if Hannahs tapes were the appropriate


way to tell her story.
Students will predict other consequences to Hannahs tape.
Students will write different ways Hannah could have told her
story.
Students will compose their own idea of whether or not the
tapes will do what Hannah expects

Overview:
Students will look at the consequences of Hannahs actions and predict whether or not the
gifts will do what Hannah expects. Students will also have the chance to develop alternative
ways Hannah could have expressed her problem.

What will I differentiate?


I will include a R.A.F.T assignment for my students. This will give the students
different options of completing their overall assignment.

Understand
Students will understand multiple characters point of view in this assignment. We will discuss
the consequences of our actions but also the consequences of Hannahs tapes. We will predict
other outcomes, besides suicide, to help resolve the problem. Students will understand of how
their actions affect other people sometimes more than expected.

By creating a RAFT students will create a better understanding of the characters point of view.
Students will create different activities that show different results from the book. Ultimately,
develop a deeper understanding for the main characters within the story.

PreAssessment
The students will lead a class discussion on their opinions and ideas of the story. Students will
create their own viewpoint on how they felt about the book and the characters actions.

Steps in the Lesson:


After reading the book we will mainly lead the class in discussion.
Clay is initially thrilled to receive a package, but quickly changes his
tune. With the entire class, we will discuss some potential
consequences of Hannahs tapes. Could the consequences be worse
than she hoped? We will discuss in small groups and as a class
whether or not the gift will do what Hannah expects.

What are the desired effects, and could there be other


reasons?
After discussion students will have time to create their ideas for their
RAFT project.
Closure Activity/Wrap up:
3-2-1
Students will give me three facts about the book, two questions they have over the book, or
one thing they find confusing or disturbing about 13 Reasons Why. They will be given an
index card and present the index card to me before leaving the classroom.

PostAssessment:
Students will complete their RAFT assignments and have background knowledge of the book
for the final book assessment.
