Briefly describe your experience & observations (list activities & how they compared to the
HUEF):
My experience with United Way was very positive and I did learn how there are
correlations and parallels to HUEF. I looked at some of their missions and how they helped
the community and I noticed two areas that stood out to me. The first was education and
how Educare helps to reach educational milestones for children. This directly paralleled
HUEF in they want to bring education to all children within the region. Also Project
Leadership supports low income students in completing high school and post-secondary
education. I feel this directly correlates with HUEF as they try to get each child sponsored
in order for them to attend a post-secondary school and further their education. The last
area I saw which compared to HUEF was Second Harvest and how they provide food and
basic necessities for families. I feel this was like HUEF in the sense they provide basic
components such as underwear, soap, toothbrush and paste as well as backpacks and shoes
for both boys and girls.

What social problem is addressed by this organization? What target population do they
serve?
There are three social problems addressed by the United Way. The first is
education, then income and finally health. The target population is all families in need
whether it is a single mother or father or a family of ten, if their needs can be meet then
United Way will help in any way they can.

What is the organizations history in social change?

Over the course of 50 years the United Way has partnered with many organizations
to bring about social change. Two in particular is the Play 60. This was partnered with the
NFL, players and coaches in 1973 to initiate a promotion of healthy food choices for kids
and families as well for individuals to get 60 minutes or more of physical activity daily.
Second, in 2000 they partnered with the Alliance of Information and Referral Systems to
petition the FCC in designating 211 as a health and human service information hotline, in
time of crisis to find local support and services.

What conclusions did you draw about their efficacy?

I feel their advocacy has gone a long way to help the community in a multitude of
ways. The varies activities and campaigns whether it be to help teenage moms,
homelessness or a guiding light to those who seek help but do not know where to look is a
viable resource for the community and its members. I feel their fight for the betterment of
people will go a long way to help people seek the relief they are seeking.
