HINDUISM
The exact Beginnings
of Hinduism are
unknown, since it had
evolved as time and
culture impacted the
religious ideas of early
India.

JUDAISM
is a religious tradition
with origins dating
back nearly four
thousand years,
rooted in the ancient
near eastern region of
Canaan

believe in karma, the

law of cause and effect
by which each
individual creates his
own destiny by his
thoughts, words and
deeds.

The central idea of

Judaism involves a
commitment by the
Jewish people to a
single, omnipotent,
incorporeal God, who
is the creator and
ruler of the universe
and the source of a
moral law for
humanity.

predominantly but
not entirely Jewish
society, with

philosophies distinct
from the Classical
Greek thought which
was dominant in the
greater Roman
Empire at the time.

the religion of Islam
has been present since
the time of the prophet

His angels, His books
to mankind, His
Prophets and
Messengers, the Day of

be worshipped and
obeyed. Muslims

This ideal had

dominated the Indian
religious landscape for
over forty centuries.
Hinduism has thus had
a long and continuous
evolution and in the
process has influenced
all other major world
religions.

When Jews from all

over the world came
to settle in modern
Israel, they found that
various subcultures
had developed in
different areas with
distinctive histories,
languages, religious
practices, customs,
and cuisine.

Christian
missionaries
proselytize all over
the world, and there
are large populations
of Christians on every
continent on Earth,
although the forms of
Christianity practiced
vary.

As Islam expanded, the

new Islamic societies
adapted and
synthesized many of
the customs they
encountered. As a
result, Muslims in
different areas of the
world created for
themselves a wide
array of cultural
traditions.

BUDDHISM
most historians agree
that Buddhism
originated in northern
India in the 5th
century B.C.E.

CONFUCIANISM
The founder of
Confucianism was
Kong Qiu (K'ung
Ch'iu), who was born
around 552 B.C.E. in
the small state of Lu
and died in 479 B.C.E.

Other: Shintoism
the formal state
religion of Japan that
was first used in the
6th century C.E.,
although the roots of
the religion go back
to at least the 6th
century B.C.E

Other: Taoism
Taoism, also known as
Daoism, is an
indigenous Chinese
religion often
associated with the
Daode jing (Tao Te
Ching), a philosophical
and political text
purportedly written by
Laozi (Lao Tzu)

The Daode jing focuses

on dao as a "way" or
"path" that is, the
appropriate way to
behave and to lead
others but the Daode
jing also refers to Tao
as something that
existed "before Heaven
and Earth," a primal
and chaotic matrix
from which all forms
emerged.

HISTORICAL
IMPACT

The impact of the

Buddhist belief is as
significant as the
Christian faith in the
Western societies.
Buddhism spread to
many Asian countries.
Buddhism, Daoism,
and Confucius have
upheld the Chinese
civilization, culture,
tradition, and history
for the last few
thousands years.
During the dynasties,
the citizens to emperor
worship to the Heaven
and respectful to
Earth. Sometime in the
Tang Dynasty, an
emperor commissioned
a monk to bring
Buddhist scripture
from India. After
awhile, the Buddha
caves along the Silk
Road started to appear
when Buddhist monks
increased in number

Confucius was the

most influential and
respected philosopher
in Chinese history. His
ideas were the single
strongest influence on
Chinese society from
around 100 BC till the
early 20th century.
The Chinese
governments
throughout this period
of two millennia had
made his ideas their
official state
philosophy. Confucian
theories and
philosophies were
even exported to
neighboring countries
and honored as wise
and noble ideals.

Society provides the

etiquette in Shinto
culture, leading many
Shintoists to be
moral in their
community so that
they can live happy
lives (The Way of the
Gods). Since Shinto
accepts other
religions, it makes it
possible for
Shintoists to practice
Buddhism.

Taoist religious sects

were persecuted in
China during the 19th
and 20th centuries, but
are currently
undergoing a revival.
