A Simple Smoking Machine

Caution : Do this experiment outdoors ONLY!

Materials:

Small transparent mineral Ball of cotton wool Cigarette


water bottle

Face mask Lighter Glue

Rubber tubing Cellotape Transparent plastic

Marker pen Iron nail Bunsen burner

Method
1) Teacher to view the video with students and explain to students how to assemble
the simple smoking machine.

2) Mark the size of the cigarette on the lid with a marker pen.

3) Then, use a bunsen burner to burn a small hole on the lid of the bottle to fit the
cigarette.

4) Insert the rubber tubing into the cigarette at one end and into the cotton wool at the
other end.

5) Wrap the ball of cotton wool, rubber tubing and cigarette with a transparent plastic
and seal with cellotape.

6) Then, put it inside the bottle and screw the lid on the bottle tightly.

7) Seal with super glue at the area shown on the diagram.

8) Before you light the cigarette, let each student put on the face mask.

9) Then, light the cigarette.

10) Squeeze the plastic bottle in order to pump the smoke from the cigarette into the
bottle.

11) If you cannot see the yellow colour of tar, repeat with another cigarette.
