Students
learned what an algebraic expression is and how to solve it. They learned about the distributive
property and the order of operations. Next week we will finish up our unit, spend Tuesday review-
ing for our Topic 6 test, and then take our test on Wednesday.
Reading Next week we will be taking a week off of our regular reading series. This will mean
that we will not be taking a weekly test next Friday. This will allow us time to dive into some
targeted reading skills that we need to work on while making it fun. The theme to many of our
reading activities will be Halloween related. For an example, one day students will read an arti-
cle on the real Dracula that the Halloween character was based off of. It should be a fun week!
Grammar Since we have no regular reading story, which our grammar topics are aligned
with, we will instead review many of the grammar topics we have covered so far. Students still
need more practice with complete and incomplete sentences as well as subject and predicate.
Writing This week we began focusing on persuasive writing and the elements that it possess-
es. The students practiced writing a whole group persuasive letter to Miss Smith trying to con-
vince her to let them have a homework-free Fall Break. The next step in our unit is for students
to be assigned a debate topic and begin researching and writing a short 5 paragraph debate es-
say. At the end, students will present their debates to the class.
Spelling We will not have a spelling test next week since we are taking a week off of the read-
ing series. Enjoy!!!
Social Studies Now that we have finished the chapter on Early Explorers in our textbook
we took the week to read our USA Studies Weekly newspaper that aligns with our standards.
The issues we read this week perfectly reviewed everything we have learned about European
explorers. Yesterday, students filled out their Chapter 3 study guide which should be used to
study for the chapter test that will be taken next Tuesday. Study, Study Study!!!!
Science- This week we focused in on the moon phases. Students were asked to memorize the
moon phases. They took notes in their Science journal, completed work in their Science book, and
they even created an edible moon phase with Oreos. Next week we will be wrapping up our Solar
System unit and begin reviewing for the unit test.

Note From the Teacher:
Next Friday will be our Flashlight Friday. A letter went home this week explaining
about the day. Students are allowed to wear their pajamas and are encouraged to bring a
sleeping back (or blanket) , pillow, and a flashlight. We will be camping out on our floor and
participating in fun and educational fall/Halloween activities. Our fall party will be in the
afternoon on that day. Letter reminders went home today with students whose parents
signed up at the beginning of the year to provide something for our party.
