Band Grading Policies

Grading Criteria
Examinations and Performance 50%
Performances
The band calendar is published 3 months before the start of the school year, should a parent
have a verifiable conflict with a performance, an Absence Request Form should be turned-in
at least 2 weeks prior to the performance date. Students who are absent from performances
without an approved Absence Request Form may receive:
Zero for that performance grade with no make-up.
Formal parent conference
Expulsion from the band program.
Students who are involved with a family or medical emergency will be subject to a written
performance review of the performance recording as arranged with the director. This
review will serve as replacement of the performance grade.
Students are expected to attend the entire performance for each band unless a published
band trip itinerary would cut said performance short.
Examinations
In-class performances
Music pass-offs
Written Exams
Scale and Sight-readings
Playing Tests/Chair Tests
Chair tests will not affect a students grade in any way.
Musical selections will be selected by the director per section and performed in-class for a
grade every month.
These selections will be announced prior to the playing test.
Class Participation 30%
Participation is averaged in one category as one grade.
Each student begins a week with a possible 100 points in this category and will have points
deducted if they do not have the following:
pencil
music/missing page
equipment necessary for
rehearsals
Mouthpieces, reeds, ligatures, lyres, etc.
instrument
Complete uniform (Hat, coat, shoes, pants, etc.)

Attendance is required at all rehearsals, sectionals, and summer band camps.
Lawrence D Varela-Halbert Jr.

Excused absences from sectionals and outside rehearsals will be granted only in cases of an
Approved Absence Request form or in the case of medical or family emergencies.
These forms must be signed by parents and turned-in at least 1 week in advance of a
rehearsal or sectional.
Forms for summer camps must be filled out by parents and turned-in at least 4 weeks
before the beginning of summer band camp.
Excessive absences from sectionals or outside rehearsals may result in
o Grade Reduction
o Parent Conference
o Loss of good-standing in band program or expulsion from the Band Program
Practice Focus Cards/Practice Journals 20%
Practice Focus Cards
Practice focus cards are assigned by directors to facilitate a foundation of goal orientated
practice and a focused practice regimen.
Students will be assigned a practice focus card with several goals that students are expected
to completed and turned in on the first day of classes in the next calendar week.
Practice Journal
The Practice Journal is a binder that will hold all Practice Focus Cards and associated
practice materials such as scales, long tones, practice techniques, etc.
Extra-Credit
Extra credit opportunities will be available in the form of:
o Band-related work (Library, Concert Setup, Rehearsal Setup, etc.)
o Attendance of appropriate Wind Band/Orchestral concerts verified by program.
o Submission of written suggested listening assignments
o Other director approved events.
These opportunities will allow for students to gain points onto a category above.
o Performance and playing test grades cannot be augmented by extra credit.
Written Assignments Late Submission Policy
Assignments may be turned in late with a 10% penalty for every day past the due date.
The instructor reserves the right to raise a students grade in exceptional circumstances.
