This document discusses an emulsifier called Nikkomulese LC produced by NIKKO CHEMICALS CO., LTD. Polarized light microscopy images show that Nikkomulese LC allows the formation of a liquid crystal network in O/LC/W emulsions that is not seen in regular O/W emulsions. Micrographs also show the liquid crystal network remains visible on skin for up to 6 hours after application of an O/LC/W emulsion containing Nikkomulese LC. Additionally, a study found that application of an O/LC/W emulsion with Nikkomulese LC for 4 weeks significantly reduced transepidermal water loss in human subjects compared to before application.

A, B: O/W. C, D: O/LC/W (with Nikkomulese LC). Liquid crystal network can be observed only when Nikkomulese LC as used as an emulsifier. Micrographs of O/LC/W emulsion applied on inside forearm for 3 and 6 hours. Liquid crystal network remains visible on the skin even 6 hours after application. In-vivo trial: changes of TEWL on the inner side thighs (12 subjects). O/LC/W system shows significant reduction of TEWL in human subjects. Before application After 4 weeks of application O/LC/W emulsion with Nikkomulese LC Photographs of stripped stratum corneum treated with O/LC/W (Nikkomulese LC) and regular O/W emulsion. The improvement of startum corneum condition can be observed when O/LC/W emulsion is applied. O/W emulsion
