Badger Lesson Name: Gumballs and Thiebaud ( about 2 class periods) Date: 2014 Grade: 2nd (can be used for all elementary-adjust as necessary) Class Profile: add TARGETS Standards met: 1PE-Notice and point out details and respond to expressive features in artworks, 3PRCreate artworks based on imagination and observation of familiar objects and scenes, 1RE-Use basic self-assessment strategies to improve their artworks. Goals: Using paper, pencil, marker and oil pastels create your own version of a Wayne Thiebaud gumball machine from imagination and observation. Essential Questions: Who is Wayne Thiebaud? Why do you think he painted everyday objects? Look closely-What are some elements of his work? What makes his work exciting-draws your attention? How can we use our materials to imitate those elements? Prior Learning: Tracing, use of oil pastels. Post Learning: Realism vs. Pop Art ASSESSMENT Formative: Questioning during lesson and checking for understanding. Posted checklist on board to keep students on track. Summative: Final rubric/attached DELIVERY Introduction: Teacher will provide hook to interest students in this project by showing some work by this artist, advise that he is a living artist, an American who did animation for Disney before beginning his painting career. Concentrate on cakes, candy, etc. (see materials section). Ask essential questions, check for understanding throughout. Discuss the elements-color, thick paint, heavy outlines, horizon line and shadows. Everyday objects. Give step by step instructions while giving a demo and post on board as checklist. (see attached). 15 min Have student helpers pass out materials. Move through the room as students work to check for understanding and remind of checklist. Make sure there is time for clean-up and students helpers to collect materials. Activities/Procedures: Students will participate in questioning and answering during introduction. Once materials have been provided students will begin drawing in pencil only, when approved by teacher will trace in Sharpie, when approved will begin oil pastel color. This will take remainder of class period and most likely another period to complete. Students will collect and clean-up when timer rings. 5-10 min 1
Differentiation: Work with aid regarding understanding and materials being used, may replace oil pastels with crayons, provide quiet space to work if necessary.
