Teacher Candidate: Amber Jordan Lesson/Observation # _2_ Subject/Grade: Science/ Kindergarten Date and Time of Lesson: Tuesday, February 25, 2014 1:45 Learning Objective: Students will be able to identify and summarize the ways seasons affect plants and animals. Alignment with Standards: South Carolina Science Standards K- 4.3: Summarize ways that the seasons affect plants animals Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Learning objectives are appropriate for development because they state exactly what the students should know after given a lesson on the standards. Prerequisite knowledge is important for students to be able to understand the lesson being taught. Prerequisite knowledge gives students knowledge that they can build off of. Most of these students have not had prerequisite knowledge because they came from their homes. The students do know the basics of the seasons, but need more knowledge about how seasons affect plants and animals. This lesson will provide them with a hands-on activity to learn and remember the seasons and how they affect plants and animals. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Lesson Objective Objective: Students will be able to identify and summarize the ways seasons affect plants and animals. Assessment(s) of the Objective Pre-Assessment- Students were assessed last week on what seasons were and how they change from each season and affect the environment around us. During-AssessmentStudents will be assessed on their behavior, and providing correct, respectful responses and attitude. Post-AssessmentStudents will complete a matching game that will allow them to match pictures of plants and animals to the season it belongs with. Use of Formative Assessment Future instruction will be based on the assessment data gathered at the end of the lesson. These booklets will allow me to see whether or not the students know how the seasons affect plants and animals and allow me to plan future lessons.
Accommodations: Accommodations will be made for any student that may need it. All students will be able to see a model of the foldable to help guide them. For the speech and ELL students, they have students sitting beside them in case they do not understand and need clarification. These students are their buddies

that they can quietly ask them for help. Instructions will be explained before the students start their activity. I will repeat any instruction details if it is needed. For the autistic child, extra help will be given by me, the cooperating teacher, or the assistant teacher. All learning styles will be addressed throughout the lesson by having a hands-on activity, listening to the material, and seeing examples of the material being taught. Materials: Copy of the lesson plan Pictures of the seasons Prezi Presentation SMART Board Matching game on SMART Board Procedures: 1. To begin our lesson, students will be seated on their carpet squares sitting quietly, ready to listen, and have their eyes on me. 2. Students will be told to sit crisscross apple sauce with their hands in their lap. 3. I will state my expectations for the students such as listening, being quiet, answering questions by raising their hands, and being respectful for me as well as their classmates. Consequences will be discussed as well. I will also tell the students what we are going to do in our lesson. 4. Students will review by observing pictures of each season and talking about the different weather changes that happen. 5. After reviewing each of the seasons, we will identify how plants and animals are affected by each of the seasons. Students will observe a Prezi presentation that will give details of each season and how the plants and animals are affected by the seasons. 6. Students will then be able to play a matching game that has pictures of plants and animals in each of the seasons. For example, a bear hibernating would go with winter or a tree with lots of leaves would go with summer. The matching game will be the activity to wrap up the lesson for the day and prepare us for the next days lesson. Essential Questions: 1. How do seasonal changes affect plants and animals? 2. In the season, winter, what do most trees not have? 3. In what season do trees leaves change color and fall off? 4. In the spring, what do flowers, trees, etc. begin to do? 5. What do animals shed when the weather gets warmer? 6. What happens to our weather during the Summer time? Activity Analysis: Prezi Presentation This activity is to engage students in learning about how the seasons affect plants and animals. This is a different technique to introduce students to the lesson. The Prezi presentation will give details of each of the seasons and how plants and animals are affected by each. For example, a picture of bear hibernating will be shown during the winter to let students know animals hibernate in the winter. Using the SMART Board and allowing the students to observe pictures increases their level of engagement and gets them excited about learning.

Matching Game on the SMART Board The matching game is to help students gain experience in using the SMART Board. The matching game will give practice with using fine motor skills by giving students a chance to drag pictures to certain spots. Most students have not had experience using the SMART Board, so allowing them to use it is very exciting to the students. The matching game will also allow students to gain the knowledge they need to know for the lesson and future lessons. References: Supporting document for SC standards. (2007, August).
