January 9, 2014 To Whom It May Concern: This letter is to highly recommend Alyssa Pepe for a middle school social studies teaching position. I have known Alyssa for the past three years as her professor and major advisor. Alyssa is a bright and mature young teacher with unbridled enthusiasm and wonderful classroom presence. She is particularly well-matched for middle school because she understands and appreciates middle school students unique social and academic needs while possessing the ability to relate well to middle school students. Alyssas work as an intern at Mansfield Middle School and as a student teacher at Sage Park Middle School demonstrate that she is a gifted educator. Her high level of energy and ability to relate to students creates an engaging and positive learning environment in her classes. When you visit her class it is clear who is in control. At the same time students are involved in hands-on activities that build knowledge and skills while also are fun. Her lessons demonstrate her own solid content knowledge and an understanding of how to differentiate activities for a variety of learners. I am very proud of her performance in the schools during her three years in the teacher education program at UConn and am particularly impressed by her professionalism. This year in internship Alyssa not only works closely with students, but she collaborates with teachers across Mansfield Middle School, negotiating the varying needs of the teachers, the curriculum, and the administrators. She engages in her schools professional community with the grace and skills beyond that of a typical pre-service teacher. This internship requires a great deal of self-motivation, tact, creativity, and patience and Alyssa has excelled. Alyssa has dedicated herself to teaching social studies in a way few pre-service teachers do. For example, she travelled to Europe to visit WWII historic sites and museums as part of a UConn study abroad experience to develop globally-oriented teachers, she attended the Connecticut Council for the Social Studies annual conference, and she participated in a Holocaust education professional development program co-sponsored the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. These experiences are indicative of her desire to constantly learn more and improve her practice. On a personal level Alyssa exhibits a deep concern for students and an incredible positive energy. She is well-liked by her peers and has a friendly, open demeanor. It has been a pleasure to be her advisor and instructor and she will make a great team member of any social studies department. Alyssa is an excellent candidate for a social studies teaching position and I highly recommend her. She is particularly well-suited for a middle school position. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. Sincerely, Alan Marcus Associate Professor, Department of Curriculum & Instruction [email protected] 860 420-9705 (cell)
