    To be or not to be?

    The Verb to Be
    As a quick review, let us remember that the verb to be is the most used verb in the English language. On the next slide, the subject-verb agreement for the present tense of this verb is shown.

    Be forms (Present Tense)

    am

    We use the verb to be

    Contractions with be
    We can make a contraction with:
    Subject pronoun + am, is, are
    Example: Im

    There is Theres That is Thats Most nouns and is Pedros Is, are + not Isnt, arent

    Contractions with be
    Dont make contractions if:
    The noun ends in s, se, ce, ze, sh, ch, or x There is a plural noun or with there Am + not

    Affirmative Questions with be


    When asking questions with be, the verb should be placed before the noun, or the pronoun Examples:
    What is your name? Are you my friend? Is this working?

    Negative Questions with be


    When asking questions with be in the negative form, the word not should be placed between the verb, the noun, or the pronoun Examples:
    What isnt she doing? Arent you my friend? Isnt this working?

    Answering these questions


    If the answer is positive use the following model:
    Yes, + pronoun + verb to be Yes, I am.

    If the answer is negative use the following model:


    No, + pronoun + verb to be + not No, she is not. No, she isnt.

    Practice Exercise Fill in the blanks using am, is, are.

    Create ten sentences using the verb to be. Try to show at least 6 different uses for this verb. Total Points: 20.
