DAILY LESSON PLAN

INVESTIGATING LIVING THINGS 1. MICROORGANISMS At the end of learning, a student is able to: Understand that micro-organisms are living organisms that are often too small to be seen. State four types of microorganisms (conduction, convection and radiation), State the properties of microorganisms To understand that micro-organisms may be beneficial or harmful.

Activities:

Discuss the definition of the terms bacteria, virus, fungi, protozoa, beneficial microbes and harmful microbes. Ask the children if they can name examples of each. Show some random pictures. Ask the children if they can identify to which category each organism belongs. Discuss the harmful effects of micro-organisms (illness, disease, rot). Discuss how bacterial disease can enter the body (breathing in, drinking water, eating food, cuts) and ways to help prevent this. For homework, ask the children to research examples of microorganisms from magazines, newspapers, CD-ROMs, the internet and reference books and to study for quiz on next class.
