What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Squid Game's return can't help but lose the element of surprise, some absolutely diabolical challenges and a knotty moral outlook keep this sophomore season thrilling.

Robert Lloyd Los Angeles Times Though I am not going to rewatch the first season for comparison, because life is short, my impression is that the new season has more of an emphasis on interpersonal relationships (good and bad) and team dynamics. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Ross McIndoe Slant Magazine The show's second season provides familiar pleasures and devious new twists. Rated: 3/4 Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Laura Martin BBC.com While it's a little long – at seven episodes, it's two episodes shorter than the last series, but some of the repetitive voting and gun-fight scenes can drag... it's a highly welcome return to this hellscape world. Rated: 4/5 Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Lyra Hale Fangirlish [...] season 2 had a lot to prove. It had to honor the first season but stand out. It also had to elevate the game, the plot, and make us want to watch season 3. It did all of that and more. And it did it without falling into a sophomore slump. Rated: A Jan 4, 2025 Full Review Karl Puschmann New Zealand Herald Even after its three-year absence, Squid Game remains impactful and distressingly relevant. Jan 3, 2025 Full Review Karen Valby Vanity Fair Squid Game is not listed as a cause in any medical journals, but bingeing the second season of Netflix’s global hit left me feeling like the haunted figure in Edvard Munch’s The Scream. Regina P This second season does a very good job of reconnecting the remaining protagonists and developing them (especially Gi Hun and the front man) while still remaining coherent, and despite the fact that the concept is no longer new, it still manages to keep the curiosity, tension and emotional investment in some new characters, even if it doesn't take as much time as season 1 to introduce them (because of less episodes + more time devoted to reintroducing the story). The fact that this season ends on a cliffhanger halfway through may disappoint some viewers but I prefer a good short season over a mediocre longer one. My only criticism would be one inconsistency SPOILER that while in season 1 the old man was player 001 from the beginning of the tournament ((he even spoke to Gi Hun right after his arrival in the main room) in season 2 the front man only shows up as player 001 for the first vote, after the first game. So either there was no player 001 during the first game, either the real player 001 died during it and the front man took his place after, but either way: how didn't anyone notice that there was no player 001 before or that he had a different face? It can be a detail but it bothers me because normally the front man wouldn't take any dumb risk of being discovered Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review K N Slow first half followed by a very predictable second half. Felt like I was watching a soap opera Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Tor Arne V Incredibly slow-paced, over-the-top, unbelievable, and unrelatable characters, and flawed logic in the storyline around every corner. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Zack B Season 2 is an ill conceived repeat of season 1. While the games and cast obviously differ from season one, the same themes of childish games leading to death, with no surprises at any point, will bore you through the second season. Everywhere you look you see the obvious outcome you predicted minutes or even episodes ago. Maybe even on episode one when the huge season ending surprise was easily snuffed out and determined to be boring. Would honestly rather have watched season 1 again. Don’t waste your time with this entire season of filler episodes that could have been covered in 30 minutes, hopefully in season 3 they try to make something interesting. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Stephen M Didn’t make sense. Ended quickly without any explanation. It’s as if half of the season is missing. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Joanne H I absolutely loved the first season and couldn't wait for the second one to be released. Unfortunately it was incredibly slow-paced, with many unnecessary repetitions. Felt like a complete waste of time. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Read all reviews
