A year ago I suddenly felt very strong trying my hand in designing crochet garments. I was (and still am) under impression of beautiful round yoked knitting sweaters. I loved the look of intricate colourworks. And I thought it would be so great to create something similar in crochet. Nearly a year ago I got a plan to build up a small collection of seamless top-down crochet sweaters. And Esja sweater was my first design. I am so thankful for your support and trust, and I am blown away with how many Esja’s have popped up in my social media feed. And today I would like to introduce HULDRA!

HULDRA Sweater pattern is available on Ravelry HERE and Etsy HERE with 30% discount through Monday, February 25th, 2019. The discount was already applied to price and no codes are needed. After this date the pattern will be listed at a regular price.
Huldra is a top-down seamless sweater with easily adjusted length of the body and sleeves. It was designed as an oversized garment with 10-20cm/4-8” positive ease on the body and fitted sleeves.
Sleeves and the body are finished with cuffs and hem which can be omitted if you would like to keep your sweater simple and with main accent on the textured yoke.
Round yoke is crocheted with textured stitches. You will only work with one color at a time, and the technique is not tricky at all. In fact, only usual crochet stitches are used in Huldra sweater. And a heavy photo-tutorial in the end of the pattern will help you to see placement of all stitches.
Huldra Sweater comes in eight (8!) sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL, 2X, 3X, 4X) with finished bust circumference: 92.5 (101, 109.5, 115.5, 122, 136.8, 149.5, 162) cm/ 36.4 (39.8, 43, 45.5, 48, 54, 58.8, 63.8) in.
To choose the right size you should measure your actual bust, add 10-20cm/4-8” (depending on how roomy you want your sweater to be) and choose closest number from listed above.
I made two samples for myself. One of them is with long sleeves and wide cuffs. I chose Our Tribe yarn by Scheepjes in three colors: silver grey, dark grey and black (you can always stay with two colors to keep the patterning less busy). In the pictures below you can see this sweater on me. I normally wear S size, but this sweater is M, and I have lots of space in the lower body.
Approx. yarn amounts for Our Tribe yarn are:
~ Yarn A: Motivate 983 x 1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) balls
~ Yarn B: Trust 982 x 1 (2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3) balls
~ Yarn C: Blackberry Black 881 x 3 (3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 5) balls
And for my second sleeveless top (LOVE it so much) I picked Ombre Whirl 562 Petrol Please Me and combined it with Whirlette 865 Chewy. Isn’t this gradient lovely?!
This top is S size and I have just a little bit of positive ease. I only needed two cakes (one Whirl and one Whirlette) for mine, but for larger sizes you’ll obviously need more yarn.
Our Tribe, Whirl and Whirlettes are available for purchase in your local Scheepjes stores, or via online retailers:
Wool Warehouse*, Black Sheep Wools*, Deramores* (all in UK with international shipping)
Caro’s Atelier* (NL and Europe)
Taemombo* (CA&US), Knotty House* (CA)
For a sleeveless "whirly" version of Huldra yarn estimates are:
1 (1, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2, 2) cakes of same Whirl, and
1 (1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) cakes of same Whirlette.
Please, note (!!!), that these are just estimates, and if your crochet style and gauge differ, you might need more yarn (for example, you might need 2 Whirlettes for size L).
Whirlette was used as Yarn A. And for Yarns B and C I used different tails (outside and inside) of the same Whirl.
So the yoke was started with Whirlette, then contrasting Whirl was added as Yarn B, and then opposite tail of Whirl was used as Yarn C. If you need 2 cakes of Whirl, you’ll be using them both at the same time, changing between cakes on every round – for one long gradient. And then Whirlette will be used again for the hem.
HULDRA sweater pattern was tested in all sizes, and I am sending many thanks to lovely ladies who helped me with polishing instructions. Here are just several examples (check all Huldra projects HERE):
1. Loele Van Den Bergh combined dark Whirlette with Our Tribe yarn and made a playful sweater for her beautiful daughter in law
2. Sandra Veneman chose tone-on-tone colors for her lovely Huldra
3. Sarah Fabbri was "whirling"
4. Esther Schippers decided for ¾ sleeves and longer body to turn her sweater into a tunic
5. Elizabeth Kalka made a summer top with Whirlettes for herself.
This blog post contains lots of pictures, and I am very excited about them. My friend Vitali Frozen helped me with photography. And I would like to use this opportunity to thank him. Vitali specializes in wedding and portrait photography, he is currently living in Poland and is travelling around Europe. If you are looking for a photographer, I can highly recommend him. He is professional with a perfect eye, very modest, friendly and easy-going. You can take a peek at his work HERE.
And just a reminding, that HULDRA Sweater pattern is available on Ravelry HERE and Etsy HERE with 30% discount through Monday, February 25th, 2019. The discount was already applied to price and no codes are needed. After this date the pattern will be listed at a regular price.
I am super excited about Huldra, and I hope you like it, too! :)

Welcome to Grinda MAL! As you probably know this design was inspired by a boat trip to Stockholm Archipelago we took together with my husband last summer (read full story HERE). If you visit Stockholm, going out to the sea is a must-do. Not only because a boat trip offers a nice change from the city life. But because it’s a small adventure itself. And the sea scenery with small islands is amazing.
Stockholm Archipelago is a group of islands situated together in a kind of a cluster. And they are as many as tens of thousands! Every island is different in size and shape. Some of them are larger and thus have become city suburbs linked to the mainland with bridges and ferries. For tourists taking a ferry out to the sea is a part of relaxed sightseeing. And for many local people it’s just another, very convenient, way to get to work, for example.
Ferries leave regularly in small intervals. And tickets are available at the boat station. Each ferry has its own name, which I find very charming. So today we are leaving Stockholm and take the boat to the islands. Take your seat (preferably outside to enjoy fantastic sea views), breath out, order a cup of tasty coffee and get your hook and Whirl ready. Our adventure begins… now!

Introduction
Grinda shawl design was inspired by a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago. The MAL consists of 5 parts. Each celebrating the love for the sea and wild nature of a small Grinda island. Grinda MAL was kindly sponsored by Scheepjes.
Difficulty Level: Beginner – Advanced Beginner. No tricky stitches, easy crochet fabric.
Size: the size of your finished shawl will depend on the yarn and hook you use, and on your personal gauge. My shawl is approx. 180cm/70.8” wide across and approx. 85cm/33.5” high.
Extended version is 208cm/81.8” wide and 95cm/37.4” high.
Full Reveal
Last week sneaks peeks and the story behind Grinda shawl were published, and I am grateful for the love your gave this design. Even without seeing a full reveal. But today I will finally show it to you, and I hope you will not be disappointed.
As you can see, Grinda shawl is a pretty simple and straightforward design. Each part represents something connected to the sea and islands, and I will tell you a new story every week. I wanted to play with filet crochet, but to create a filet fabric in a little bit different way.
I made three samples in total. One of them uses just one cake of Whirl 769 Blackberry Mint Chip. This is a small version of Grinda shawl. And if you choose to make it, you should be very careful with the gauge not to run out of the yarn.
My second sample uses Woolly Whirl 472 Sugar Sizzle and Whirlette 854 Blueberry. I couldn’t find a 100% matching Whirlette, and just took a similar colour. Even though the gradient colour change is not smooth, the shawl still looks very organic. And this is also an example of extended, or plus-size shawl.
Check a complete guide on how to match Whirls and Whirlettes on Simy’s blog HERE. But again, if you don’t find matching colors, you can use similar ones.
And my third sample was made with three different Whirlettes: 852 Frosted, 860 Ice, 865 Chewy. I had lots of leftovers, but not enough in one color to make a full extension of the shawl. So I decided to make a fringe instead.
And here are four samples completed by wonderful ladies who helped me testing the pattern:
1. By Hilde Tindlund. Whirl 789 Tasty Nom Nom, Whirlette 855 Grappa. Extended Version. Photo credit - Ida Christin Foss
2. By Laura Jackson. Whirl 758 Lavenderlicious. Small version.
3. By Nina Mayer. Whirl 767 Melting Macaron, Whirlette 866 Bubble. Extended version
4. By Lori Baran. Whirl 755 Blueberry Bambam, Whirlette 860 Ice. Extended version.
Materials
Yarn. Grinda Shawl uses one cake of Whirl (or Woolly Whirl, or Frosted Whirl) yarn by Scheepjes. Depending on the gauge and personal crochet style more yarn can be required to complete the shawl. To be on the safe side it is recommended to add one cake of Whirlette yarn in matching color. Leftovers can be used for a shawl extension (given in the pattern) or a fringe. Solid version of Grinda Shawl uses three cakes of Whirlette (see above).

Yay! I have been secretly working on a new design for almost a year, and today is the day! I can finally show you sneak peeks and proudly announce there will be a new MAL (make-a-long) coming soon. This design was inspired by my trip to Stockholm last summer. Or, to be precise, by a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago. My new shawl is named Grinda which means “gate” in Norwegian, but it’s also the name of a small island in two hours by boat from Stockholm.

To say I love the sea means to say nothing. I LOVE the sea. And I desperately need to come to the sea at least once a year. To breathe out, to relax, to find way back to myself. Without these short trips I don’t know how I could live… I secretly hope one day, when I am not busy anymore, when I don’t have to take care of anything, when I am (probably) retired – I will move to the sea to live in a small house near the beach, and to be able watching the sea from my small window. Every single day. My sea should be cold, and grey. With pale yellow sun reflected in the waves…
Every year in the summer me and my husband try to take some days off to travel. Last year we spent a week in Stockholm. It was in July, and the weather was not “summery” at all. Lots of clouds and raining. Just perfect for me! :) It was a bit boring to wander in the city streets under the rain, and we decided to take a boat trip to Stockholm archipelago.
To save as much as possible on the flight I only was allowed to bring hand luggage on the plane. And to fit 8kg I packed only one cake of Whirl. To occupy myself during long hours in the trains, at the airport and on the plane.
I took my Whirl to boat trip, too. And apparently a new shawl design started growing in my hands. Inspired by small islands, Grinda’s nature and magic sea views…
I took lots of pictures on Grinda and other islands. Browsing these pictures fill my heart with precious memories. And today I invite you to join me on a virtual boat trip. Perhaps, you love the sea as much as I do. Or this design will mean something else to you. But anyway I hope you will enjoy it.
Grinda MAL will officially begin on July 11th, 2018 when first part of the pattern will be released on my blog. The pattern will be FREE and new instructions will be released weekly. There will be five parts in total.
Not to miss a single part, you may want to Subscribe to my blog to receive updates directly to your e-mail box. But please, note, newsletters are sent once in two weeks. Grinda MAL will be officially hosted on Facebook in OFFICIAL Scheepjes - International Group and in OFFICIAL Scheepjes – Dutch group. I will also post MAL entries in my own groups on Facebook HERE and Ravelry HERE. Please, choose what suits you best and join one of the groups.
The pattern will come in English (US and UK terms), Dutch, Portuguese, Norwegian and Czech languages.
This design was kindly sponsored by Scheepjes. My shawl uses just one cake of Whirl yarn (you can also choose Frosted Whirl or Wooly Whirl). But because the entire cake is needed to complete the shawl I would recommend to additionally order one cake of Whirlette yarn in matching color, just to be on the safe side (in case your gauge will differ from mine significantly). Leftovers can be used to either extend the shawl (instructions are given in the pattern) or to make the fringe.
If you are not sure which Whirls and Whirlettes match, please, check THIS useful information on Simy’s blog.
Whirl and Whirlette yarns are available in your local Scheepjes shops or via online retailers: Wool Warehouse*, Deramores* and Black Sheep Wools* (all three in UK with international shipping), Caro’s atelier (NL and Europe), Knotty House* (Canada).
