ten things tuesday

Ten lesser-known movies that are fun to watch:

1)  Fandango.  A college fraternity road trip movie. I watched this a lot when the movie first came out. I always wished I had some college friends to go on an epic adventure like that.

2)  City of Angels.  This is my favorite movie because it's one of the few romantic movies I can think of that doesn't end happily ever after in the traditional sense. And it has a great soundtrack.

3)  Running Scared.  It's a classic family favorite. We watched this movie so many times and repeated the funny lines over and over and over. I think it was overlooked because the buddy cop movie had been done so many times in the mid-80s, with Beverly Hills Cop and Lethal Weapon. But I love both Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines, may he rest in peace.

4)  The Fisher King.  It is a redemption story that is compelling and wonderfully acted. Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams are fantastic.

5)  Reign Over MeA man who lost his family in the September 11 attack on New York City runs into his old college roommate. Rekindling the friendship is the one thing that appears able to help the man recover from his grief.

6)  Beautiful Girls.  It's a cult hit that really stuck with me. Natalie Portman is so sweet. Friends gather for their high school reunion; they are all at a crossroads in their lives. An underrated film.

7)  Office Space.  One of the movies that I always stop to watch when I catch it on. Anyone who's ever done battle with a photocopier can relate to this movie.

8)  The Family Stone.  Dynamics of a family holiday meal. Oh boy. Every family's comedy/drama.

9) A Fish Called Wanda.   is a heist comedy about a gang of diamond thieves who double-cross each other in a series of increasingly hilarious and chaotic events. Oh, great googley moogley but I laughed at the torture scene. This movie reminds me of such a specific time in my life--the friends, the atmosphere--all of it.

10) Say Anything.  Lloyd Dobbler and Diane Court are exploring a relationship at the end of their senior year of high school. Can their relationship work?

ten things tuesday

Ten favorite book adaptations to the screen (large or small):

1)  Harry Potter.  Rowling's prejudiced views aside, the books are wonderful and the movies are, too.

2)  One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.  This view of mental hospital misfits is a favorite in my Advanced Placement Psychology class.

3)   The Shining.  One of my favorite Stephen King novels and a favorite movie.

4)  The Godfather.  Granted, I've only read the first of the series, but the movies are almost better.

5)  The Princess Bride.  There are no words.

6)  Pride and Prejudice.  I never tire of the world I slip into once I get the rhythm of the writing.  And both the 1995 series and the 2005 movie are delightful.

7)  The Color Purple.  I read this for my Twentieth-Century American Literature class in college, just before the movie was released.  I cried at both.

8)  The Help.  I loved the book a little more than the movie--some of the comedic elements of the movie detracted from the storyline.

9)  Charlotte's Web.  If I close my eyes, I can hear the voices of the actors in the animated film.

10)  Under the Tuscan Sun.  This is one of those movies that I always stop to watch when I'm flipping through the channels.  And I've re-read the book a few times.

the heights

My bestie and I went to The Heights tonight. Well, from her living room.  Enjoyable.  We both see definite specific stylings of Lin-Manuel Miranda's writing.  I didn't know Jimmy Smits was a singer!

12.25.2020

unusual christmas

 Watching my favorite Christmas movie!

I got to talk to my sisters and parents and my bestie.  It wasn't a bad day.  Low key.

Now, I think I'll listen to Hugh Grant's reading of A Christmas Carol and knit.

thanksgiving

I love being with my family. It doesn't matter how many of us are gathered together--there is copious laughter. My dad, stepmom, and I had a lovely little meal. Scratch that: we had a small feast! And we laughed and gabbed and laughed and gossipped and laughed. Dad conked out on the couch with Maggie as his sidekick. Barb and I did the clearing and washing up. Dad snored. Barb and I laughed and talked for two hours. Dad woke up, my sisters phoned and I came home. A lovely, lovely day.

And my tradition continues:

self-care sunday

A three-hour (each way) drive, a tasty lunch, and the movie I've been waiting for! All-in-all, a splendid day by myself.

7.21.2019

self-care sunday

This whole weekend was spent with two of my best friends. We laughed. A lot. We talked and talked. Never running out of things to say. Even though it was sweltering hot, we had adventures. Great tacos. Great music, amazing tacos, even more amazing margaritas, and then a fabulous film!

6.02.2019

self-care sunday

1) Slept in--no alarm!

2) Enjoyed my iced coffee. Mindfully enjoyed it.

3) Went to the movies with my bestie--we loved Rocketman.

4) Did a leave-in condition today, my hair is so soft.

11.18.2018

self-care sunday

I was feeling a funk coming on so I made plans with my bestie to go to the movies. Bohemian Rhapsody was amazingly well-cast and a great movie, I forget how much I love Queen. The self-care portion of today was reaching out to my bestie instead of hibernating and withdrawing from the world.

8.04.2018

happy day 4

8/4:
Christopher Robin is the most magical movie I've seen in a very, very long time.

7.06.2018

so fun

Absolutely fantastic way to spend a hot, humid day! A movie, air conditioning, and popcorn! So fun--I hope there are more to come.

three on thursday

In honor of today being humid and 90+ degrees, here are three things I did/will do today--to try to be cool:

1) Drove in my air-conditioned car. I had some errands to do that took me out of town.

2) Parked myself in front of the fan.

3) Matinee! The movie theater will be significantly cooler than my 2nd floor apartment. Plus, I want to see Oceans 8!

7.04.2018

incredible

Because it's so darn hot--94 degrees--and humid, I went to the matinee and saw The Incredibles 2. The sequel lived up to the hype. So fun!

6.01.2018

spontaneous fun

Spontaneous trip to the movies on this very hot and humid Friday night. My bestie and I went to see Book Club! A chick flick at it's best--the acting was so fun! Andy Garcia can be my pilot any day.
