It's a love story but with the narrative switches between the pov of Tory and then Beth - other voices also intrude - Robert and Betram and Mrs Bracey - and also Prudence - each is aware they are connected with the others and so their behaviour flicks from their own perspective through the eyes of the others.

I think my all-time favourite novelist! I'm noting how she is differentiating her central character, Beth away from herself. In Mrs Lippincote's . . . the mother is v close to Taylor and in this her 3rd novel, she is distancing herself. I love all her insights on the writing process - 'she feels like an empty house, her characters hovering in the air around her . . .or hammering to get out'.
