"I get a little impulsive this close to a full moon," I admitted.
"You sound like a woman blaming her lack of control on her period."
And you just lost any chance of me having any respect for you whatsoever.

Anyway, this is the story I wrote. It doesn't end "And they lived happily ever after." This is the way it ends:
....And they lived.

THE SHORTEST CHAPTER IN THE BOOK
[He] opened the door.
"Guess what?" I said.
Yeah, that might be one of the shortest chapters I've ever read. LOL

A few feet above the ground I grabbed hold of the nylon cord and pulled myself upward to create a little slack, then flipped to my feet with smooth ninja-like efficiency.
Or maybe I hit the ground between the pit and the tunnel on my shoulder because my foot caught in the cord when I tried to roll, and then I spent a few seconds flopping around like a fish...
I forget which.
LOL

The question was, had he come here to talk to me or kill me?
I decided to ask him.

Reaching for my silver steel knife, I got my second shock: I was completely naked. When had that happened? Again?
LOL. Not a good time to be naked.

I almost regretted stabbing a knife into his ear. Or I wanted to do it again. I wasn't sure which.

A word about knightly training might be appropriate here. Being mere humans, knights have slower reflexes than most of the creatures they hunt. Because of this, brief pauses are a luxury that knights simply can't afford, and a lot of their training focuses on eliminating hesitation. Occasionally this leads to mistakes, but knights believe that it's better to err on the side of decapitation.

"You really are a lonely son of a bitch, aren't you?"
I grimaced. "I live like a Nazi war criminal or a serial killer...like I have something to be ashamed of."
"Do you?"
"I was raised to believe that werewolves are demon-infected, and I am one."

"Why? You planning on killing him?"
"I wouldn't call it a plan," I said. "A really vivid fantasy maybe."
"Don't let the way [she] talks to [him] give you the wrong idea," he advised. "The man's been killing people like you for a long time."
"I was born before World War Two, Chauncey," I said softly. "I've been killing people like him for a long time."
I do like John.

Whatever I did in the next ten seconds was either going to change me significantly or get me killed, and I wasn't ready for a decision like that. But that's life too -- not being ready for it.
