"Take one of mine again and I'll kill you." He said it in a conversational manner, matter-of-fact and flat, but in his eyes I could see a simple certainty. If he had to, he would kill me. He would not lose any sleep over it. He would not give it a second thought. He would do it and move on, untroubled by ending my existence.

Fuck it, I'm doing a re-reading, again, before I start Magic Shifts.. I really tried not to do a re-read, but it's Kate & Curran, so who can blame me? :)

He grabbed me and kissed me. The kiss sent a wave of heat from my lips all the way to my toes. Curran's eyes laughed. "For luck," he whispered, his breath a hot cloud on my ear.
I broke free and wiped my mouth on the back of my hand. "When we're done with the upir," I growled, "I'll give you that fight you've been wanting."
"Much better," Curran said.

His gaze probed me. "Who are you? Where do you come from?"
"I'm pretty sure I came from my mom and dad," I said. "See, when a man puts his penis inside a woman's vagina…"

Was he coming on to me or just messing with me? Probably the latter. Well, then, two could play that game. I looked pointedly at his midsection. "No thanks," I said. "I know exactly what I'm missing."
He grinned.

Nataraja's voice came like a whisper of scales on rough stone. "Kate."
"Nate."
He grimaced. "I'm not in the mood to be disrespected."
"No wonder. It's quite late for a man of your age. Ever thought about retirement?"

"I've never come across anyone like you."
"Good thing, too. People like me don't like it when you try walking over them. They might break your legs."

Something touched my shoulder. I whirled and saw the Lord of Beasts looking at me from the gap ten feet away.
"Curran," he said, as if granting me a boon. "You can call me Curran."
