At Basgiath War College, joining the Riders Quadrant is one of the most dangerous and revered paths one can choose. Violet Sorrengail never got a choice, though. Despite a disability that makes her more susceptible to injury and the fact that she grew up learning how to become a Scribe, her mother will only allow her to become a Rider. Now Violet must face dangerous challenges designed to weed out the weak, not to mention the fact that she'll also have to attempt to bond with a dragon. And her greatest enemy, Xaden Riorsan, will be watching the entire time. As a child of a former rebellion leader, Xaden has every reason to want Violent dead. That is, if the Riders Quadrant doesn't kill her first.

Well, the hype is definitely real with this book! What a great start to the series! From the very beginning I was intrigued by Basgiath War College and Violet's backstory. I admired her determination to survive even though the odds were stacked against her. Thanks to all the challenges that took place throughout the first year, this book kept me hooked. And the constant threat of death brought the suspense! I loved all of the characters- both good and evil- and became very attached to the ones who formed the closest relationships with Violet. The romance was great, although I do wish there wasn't such a focus on sexual attraction. I'm a little nervous that this will be ramped up as the series goes on, but I'm hopeful that the author will continue to keep the focus on the plot and the emotional connection going forward. In the end, this book brought out all of the emotions for me. The last 60 pages took me from anxious to sobbing to screaming in surprise. That's how you know it was good! I'm definitely looking forward to where this is going and will be anxiously awaiting the next book! ...more "
