I am so curious to hear what everyone thinks of KMM's decision to throw Dani into the silver and come out a week (or 5 1/2 yrs) as "Jada". Shocked? Happy? Did you love her/ hate it? I am not sure yet if I like what happened or not, but it just seemed a little contrived to me...

I see that you haven't given the book a good rating at all. I'm still waiting to rate it after a re-read, because I skipped a lot of the book the first time.

Regarding Jada; I'm not sure if it's because English isn't my first language (or second), that I had problems understanding what she was saying.

Her language-for me- was all a bit floating and not understandable at all. I had to read the sentences twice before I gave up.

I liked her character, but I was obsessed about seeing Dani in her. And it's a bit sad that Dani-the 14 year old- is gone. I think that Jada is intresting, I kind of wish that she was an independed character of her own, and we could keep both her and Dani.

Yeah, I loved a lot of parts of the book but it really felt like KMM dropped the ball on quite a few things.

Yes, I could see what you mean about Jada's language. And most of her dialogue she is repeating definitions of words!! And yes I would love Jada if she wasn't in Dani's body.

I was pretty surprised that everyone acted so chill that Jada was Dani... no one seemed to be devising plans to get Dani back! Mac was almost getting used to having Jada around. I liked the tricks Ryo employed to get glimpses of Dani (the 'Ryodan says softly, “Holy strawberries, Dani, we’re in a jam.”', the kiss/kill thing)... but I thought they would work harder to get Dani back! I thought they would have her back by the end of the book, but nope!

The other thing that was a little strange is how Jada seemed to crave Ryodan's approval, she wanted to save Christian, but yet she didn't even want to see Dancer!
I am not sure I get why.

I think everyone acted so chill was because when dealing with a split personality it isn't as simple 1-2-3 to get Dani back. Jada has taken over and it will take time for Dani to try and re-emerge. Between the trauma she suffered as a child and then for the time in the silver Jada was the logical choice to take over what Dani couldn't handle. Jada is all logic and sounding like a dictionary while Dani is the polar opposite. If KMM would have had Dani just snap out of it that would have been completely fake IMO. Dissociative identity disorder (DID) is one of the most controversial psychiatric disorders with no clear consensus regarding its diagnosis or treatment.

I do agree she did crave Ryodan's attention and approval. I think that is a part of Dani trying to re-emerge. She owed Christian and I keep thinking she learned something about Dancer once she got out of the silvers and made her way back to Dublin.

Good points. This is helping my perspective. I was just like, Give me Dani back NOWWWW!!!!!! But that explanation makes sense. Also, in Iced, the Observer took her over for a brief second and one sentence from Ryodan brought her back, so I was thinking it wouldn't be that hard. But yeah, she has been in control for 5.5 yrs!

Good point as well. I do believe he was her first "real boy" crush so I'm sure there are many emotions tied to Dancer. I also wonder if she could be mad at him through no fault of his own. We can only speculate on what she was thinking in the silvers at this point. I wonder when Jada fully took over, you know, how long was Dani there and what world was it that Jada finally saw her chance to take over. I think Jada was also the one to kill Alina right?

I would bet Dani survived in the silvers for a good while before she was absolutely going to die and then she let Jada take over so she would survive. I am sure she put up a good fight.

Yes, Ryodan and Mac say Jada killed Alina. I bet Dani just couldn't do it, so Jada took over.

Dani is a survivor and I agree she probably held out as long as she could or maybe something similar to her scene in ICED with Ryodan and Jo where she seeks the Observer out not knowing the danger and there was nobody there to pull her back so Jada became the main persona.

What worries me is that most times a traumatic invent is what causes a personality to emerge so what is going to happen that will cause Dani to re-emerge?

I think Jada didn't want to be around Dancer because it might shake Dani up and cause her to re-emerge. Or I think that maybe he did something to Dani that she wasn't aware of but somehow Jada is aware...causing Jada to kind of protect Dani from him.

I wonder the same thing, Hazelwileyed. What is will happen to make her re-emerge? Maybe losing someone she really cares about? I don't know.

Yes it will have to be something big to make her re-emerge! Which is why I bet it will be the climax of the next book. I don't know if I can go that long without Dani being back, argh!

Haha! Maybe the middle of the book? Then when she comes back she will be a little shaky. It's not like you snap out of it and start laughing and stuff. It takes time to heal. Jada might have been around for a long time so it is going to something huge to get Dani to come back.

Oh, I HOPE it is in the middle. And I hope the next book really comes out in October! Bah!

Oh I like that idea and man would Dancer be in serious trouble! She did sleep around him and said herself that she slept like the dead so he could have experimented on her....maybe Jada isn't such a deep sleeper.

It would have to be something that would shake even Jada's foundation. I can't even begin to speculate because it would probably be devastating to me too haha

With real DID cases they work on merging all personas so I think when we get Dani back it will be a Dani with all of Jada's memories as well and Dani will have to forgive herself for things that happen that were beyond her control. My heart broke when she screamed at Mac that she deserved to die.

I know!!!! I was thinking the same thing, Hazelwileyed. Remember in Iced, she was sleeping and he said he tried to move her and she had punched in the sleep and he was bruised. I instantly went back to that. Like aha! LOL. So silly but I couldn't help think that there was something more sinister about him being around Jada. She was not interested in it one bit! If that was true, then Ryodan would be surely peeping Dancer's situation out because he would be suspect that she couldn't stomach him around or wanted to hurt him.

I was just going to ask you to speculate...I was thinking if Dancer was good...and something happened to him, I can see her freaking out and trying to shake loose of Jada. I don't know. The possibilities are endless :)

I like the sinister aspect, it would explain why he stood up to Ryodan in ICED. He had no fear because he knew something the rest of them didn't and it was his ace in the hole. It's hard to believe Ryodan wouldn't know something but it could happen hahaha

Dancer always seems really smart to me but also pompous which I guess most genius people would be in a place like Dublin after the walls fell. But I've always been suspicious about how he did survive and why haven't we ever heard or seen of him interacting with any Fae? Now my mind is spinning thinking about this kid haha

I was so sure we would learn what he is in Burned, but nope! We only got a few lines. And he didn't come off as pompous in Iced, I didn't get why he was kinda rude to Mac.

kinda? He was a T-O-T-A-L dick to Mac. Treating her like "dumb blond chick" which was disheartening at least. Everybody demeaning Mac's intelectual was quite rude.

I thought he was rude because he felt that Dani's heart was broken. I might be wrong about that though.

I really didn't see it as rude. He's super smart and is used to people around him that can understand his lingo. He obvious thought Mac was one of those people.

I forgot about his interaction with Mac. He was quite rude and it could have been because he's Team Dani but he could have been a little more respectful in my opinion. Even when you're that smart you have to know that not everyone else is going to be even with the population smaller than before. It means something to me that Ryodan doesn't trust him. And since Ryo likes to keep things to himself until he's ready he could already know exactly what the deal with Dancer is and is waiting to drop the bomb so to speak. Maybe that's how he plans to try and get Dani to re-emerge....

Does anyone have an idea of what those unseelie ghostie things really are? I know we were told that they're basically the kings admins but it that it? I don't remember reading if they had a reaction to Dani either, did I miss that?

I definitely think Dancer knew something was off about Mac. I'm doing a slow re-read and found some interesting things that might be nothing but still..

and also he was rude to her because she hurt Dani, it's not like he knows what actually happened but he loves Dani. And was probably frustrated that Mac couldn't grasp anything he was saying! when she was summoned to like actually be helpful LOL

Also re: Dancer, Jada says in one chapter that

"She eliminates humans quickly. She takes no pleasure in the kill. There is satisfaction in seeing debts collected, leggers balanced. There are those she will protect at any cost.

And I wonder who/what/why!! Mac's not one of them, she's on her list. Maybe Dancer is one of those she will protect, but she does not want to see him, because Dani will respond to him the most.

oh yeah, i definitely agree that Ryodan knows at least SOMETHING that's going on with Dancer. you'd think he'd see some sketchy stuff since he stalked him 24/7 in Iced and had Papa Roach still watching him in Burned. plus he could have sensed Kat's thoughts when she mentioned how deep and dark Dancer's secrets were?

I could totally see Ryodan waiting to drop the bomb until a pivotal moment. But I feel like that would make her even more cold/remote because she trusted Dancer and would probably feel betrayed :( unless Dani was like umm hell no! and came back to kick his butt hahaha

agreed, Dani would definitely respond to him. BUT I don't think Jada is gonna end up killing Mac.. especially since she knows Mac won't kill her.

ALSO! Interesting how DEG made a point of saying to "beware the Sweeper.." and then says something about how the Sweeper he even likes "that broody ass poet" -- the female musician that Papa Roach was saying Dancer is hanging out with?!

Little Feather, I felt all those things exactly! I felt everyone was kinda taking a laid back approach to freeing Dani, Mac thought it was impossible for almost the whole book. But Jada is wicked dangerous, she's got it out for Mac and Ryodan isn't able to control that girl! LOL so I guess they were doing the best they could.

Also, I hated Jada. I hated that the story took this route, honestly it feels like a cop out. We don't get to see our supposed protagonist grow into her own. We'll get a rehash of sorts and it bums me out and distances us from her character.

Dani will emerge but she'll also have to grow into herself as a merged unit. That's not the same as growing up. And she better emerge in feverborn, not at the end either! This can't be dragged out that long! Dani's got a lot of rebuilding to do. I wonder if one thing will snap her out of it, or she'll thaw until Dani takes the driver's seat. I'm really having a hard time seeing how this merging will happen. A big part of my problem is that we don't know how/what/why/when Jada took over.. I know Dani had to have lasted a long time in there but how mature could she have gotten? how much of her is even left..

Ok, just thought of this... why on earth does Jada want to kill DAKU?????????? Is Daku Dancer? I doubt it, but who is he that he is the one she anticipates "second most" to battle with? And who is the first most? And she will let 2 of the nine live... I am guessing Lor and Kasteo. But she sure didn't act like she wanted to kill Ryodan that much!!!

I think Ryodan was the first most because he's messed with her the most. It said when Mac, Barrons and Ryodan entered chester's that two of them were on her list. And later when she finds the gray woman with spear wounds she says the one who did it was on her list.
So that leads me to think Barrons is the one who is not? maybe the one who will feel sorrow is not Kasteo but Barrons, because he will have lost Mac. ( I don't think Dani will blame Barrons for her running into the silvers, she'd probably be relieved that he let her pass him, knowing he could easily catch her. )

I think there's a good chance that Dancer is the sweeper.. and has a really powerful glamour. Or he's something non-fae b/c I don't think there's any way Dancer could be a normal kid, the ZEW's wouldn't get near him.

Interesting. Yes that's right, of course she wouldn't want to kill Barrons--Dani has a crush on him and always thought he was a really amazing dude.

I think the whole sweeper thing sounds so strange--a big collection of trash? I don't remember it being mentioned in the other books. I would say sure, Dancer could be the Sweeper, but the sweeper isn't fae and Dancer's eyes are "fae-brushed" so I think he has to be some part fae somewhere.

but if Dancer is Fae, they should be able to detect it. Dani says the look fae brushed, it could just mean they're an inhuman color. I also wonder about his parents, a humanitarian and ambassador. sounds like the kind of people who would start up WeCare. and he mentions his belief in god as well as he had knowledge about people taking the white. this could all be innocent but I'm looking for some sinister signs LOL

in the glossary it says whoever runs WeCare does NOT like Dani though..I know there's a lot of people who don't like her but who would take it to that level? Maybe Dancer's parents who are all oh nono this girl almost killed my son! LOL okay my theories are getting far fetched and going in circles now aha

Im not disappointed in the least about Dani/Jada. I really....I mean REALLY would of loved Burned to be about Dani. What she had to endure in the silvers and her transformation into Jada but Im pretty positive that Moning will explain that later. Or, who knows....maybe not.

As far as theories go? Im done trying to predict stuff. I remember being part of a discuss group in which we were all theorizing what the Gray women was going to have in store for Mac when she made that promise to her but as you all know in this book, it didn't pan out to anything. lol

The gray woman thing really just threw me because i thought it was going to be something huge to play out later, and whoops she dead..just like that. I did wonder if she really died because when i read it quickly it seemed she was still alive Mac said, withering in agony. Did Mac finish her off with the spear, could she regenerate still? The rules change a lot so I am not sure how predictable any of this is now.

I do think Dancer is the Sweeper, Sweeper fixes, Dancer is an inventor. They are the same person pretty sure. He is inhuman and after papa roach we pretty much know for sure that there are lots of players out there now that are not Fae. I think the musician he was hanging around with was just some person that was helping figure out different tones for the HFK mystery and black hole issue. That Satan's music bit he talked about.

I need to know more about this Daku.

I keep fixating on the Dancer/Jada dynamics. My hunch about her disliking him is strong.

i have no thoughts on Daku.. i thought it was going to be huge from the teaser and it was literally one line. I think Jada wants to avoid him for sure, maybe stirring feelings in Dani but my hunch is he is on the list....because he is the Sweeper....and had something in her genetic mutation creation. LOL I so fixated on dancer being Sweeper.

Could it be that Dancer is only half-Fae so they don't sense anything about him because the human side overwhelms the smell so to speak? I know Adam Black is suppose to make an appearance with his daughter so maybe he'll know more about Dancer's origins. Isn't there a rumor that Adam was a human turned Fae then back to human? Maybe the same thing happen to Dancer....

And this just came to mind but what if Jada wants to kill Daku because he did find her in the Silvers and left her there instead of rescuing her? Ryodan did send them in looking for her and we don't know what any found or didn't find.....

I felt like Mac was forcing us to think it was super sexy. Also when Mac said "Ryodan’s stance becomes even more aggressive, intimidating, coercing. But unlike Dani, who would have backed away, Jada molds herself farther into his space, demanding her share of it." It really irritated me! I know that Mac is not very perceptive and has no real idea of the Dani/Ryo situation. But still. I hated how she was assuming that Dani wouldn't of been able to stand up for herself. In iced Dani definitely didn't let Ryodan intimidate her. It's like she's setting up Jada and Ryodan in her mind.

Also I thought that Mac would have acted more protective of Dani being with Ryo? She didn't say anything about them as a possible couple, other than saying they would be weird together? And going Eww? Where is the supposed care that Mac feels for Dani's well being?

and now that i think about it.. why WOULD she have beef for Daku, Fade, etc.? maybe she blames them for not saving her right when they found out about her? Ryodan would have Daku's HEAD if he found out he left Dani in the Silvers lol.

i mean, she found out all of this information about them and wants to kill them even though she has little to no interaction with most of them.

she's learned to trust and like Ryodan and realized that Dani can clearly take care of herself now, I think..
and i definitely thought the basking in his light was way more special than the kiss too!!
and even tho Dani can take care of herself, I agree that she probably would've backed away from a Ryodan-looking-super-scary as opposed to getting all up in his business.
she might taunt the lion, but she's never going to pet it! unlike Jada.
i think Mac's super perceptive, she just can't read minds and didn't know what was going on in the heads the whole time:)

I agree. Macs pov ruined any potential Dani/Jada/Ryodan pairing for ms because it felt so forced and unatural. You could feel the connection between Dani and Ryodan in Iced even when Dani was fighting against him and you didn't know where the hell Ryodan stood and what he wanted. The connection and chemistry was real then. In this book, it just felt like KMM hurried up to change Dani into hot kick ass woman and had Mac Stan them so we could be like yes this couple is hot. But there was no build up or growth. It was all tell and no show.

I KNOW. LOL. I seriously felt like that chemistry was missing this book. Even though I sorely wanted it to be blazing my pages lol. The slow build up of a budding relationship evolving was missing in Burned. Their interactions, watching them getting to experience and understand other's character quirks and slowly learning to respect the other. It was all missing! :(
That's arguably one of my favorite things about Ryo and Dani as well. You can feel their connection from the beginning. Whereas in Burned it felt like an unnatural forced plot device. Most likely because of bloody Mac and the whole Jada business. :(

I agree 100%. I truly feel like this book could have worked better if Dani had gotten more than 5% page time so we could see some if her developement and get some build up to robot Jada. Everything was rushed and sloppy. Even the reveal.

I am so glad someone is not jumping into this Jada full embrace. Jada is a contrived boring plot device and her and Ryo had absolutely no chemistry at all. The only chemistry people are clinging too is that she is 'old' enough to be kissing him. I felt like i needed a hot shower after the scene not a cold one. lol

I agree, the great thing about Ryodan/Dani was their potential was not based on something physical. And that aspect gets utterly decimated in this book. I was expecting the kiss scene to be all hot and stuff but I ended up feeling like oh shit wait no no stop! Honestly it kinda disturbs me because like we don't know what the hell Dani's actually feeling in there, except maybe when she's basking but still... I don't like it. I don't like Jada. I honestly hope there is no damn merge and Dani just takes over and keeps Jada's powers.

I do think KMM is saving more Jada/Dani reveals for feverborn but to not include ANY of her growth in Burned just makes it feel like an incomplete book to me. And aren't we going to revisit all the things we learn about Ryodan once Dani learns them? so what was the point, it took all the mystery out of their story and spelled it out point blank.

Am I the only one that was okay with not getting any glimpses of Dani in the silvers? I was actually okay with Jada and wasn't too surprised about the reveal because let's face it, the observer was coming out one way or another.

I am still trying to figure out what Dancer is. I like the theory that he might be the Sweeper. It wouldn't be too far fetched since he could have made a powerful glamour (someone mentioned earlier) and it does say he likes to tinker with things. Doesn't Dancer always hang out in the University- lots of things to tinker with and to stash and collect.

I liked Ryodan in Iced and I still liked him in Burned (I may be a minority in this lol). I liked how he interacted with Jada. I believed his soft spot for Dani/Jada because when he was telling Lor about that time he saw her tilt her head and laugh while watching the street performer, it reminded me of when Dani freeze framed into level four and caught Ryodan laughing. They have similar outlooks on life and I love that about them both.

Jada is what we always thought Ryodan was: a logical machine void of emotions. Or is she really void of them all? Her insecurity after failing to determine the Crimson Hag's movement, showed that she can be vulnerable. Jada doubts Dani's abilities, just like most, but the only person who never doubted her was Ryodan. So I'm hoping that their HEA will be epic(if that's what is in store- which based on LOR's discussion about watching women grow up from birth and eventually bedding them is totally relevant).

I just want the next book, like yesterday lol

I liked the idea of the observer/split personality Dani - I do. I was interested in it in Iced. I just don't think she executed it well at all in Burned. Nothing was executed well, it was all sloppy in my opinion.
