really liked it

I've always believed that giving flowers meant something . I knew that red roses meant love and somewhere along the line I learned that Baby's Breath , almost always in a bride's bouquet signified everlasting love . However, that was the extent of my knowledge of the meaning of flowers , originating in the Victorian era - until I read this book . Do flowers speak to us in this way ? I really don't know but it's nice to think so and the author has creatively wrapped this language around this story.

Abandoned at birth Victoria is now 18 years old and "emancipated" from being a ward of the state . Her narrative alternates between her life at age ten, when she is taken in by Elizabeth and is finally looking at a chance to have a mother and present day, as she turns 18 and is being released from a group home. We learn of Victoria's " gift " for helping people convey their feelings , hopes and thoughts , through flowers and we learn what happened when she was ten.
The book, though, is about more than what the flowers mean . It is about what it means to belong , to be loved , to be able to love. It's also about family and forgiveness .

I grew to love Victoria and Elizabeth , in spite of their mistakes because I was moved by the sad events in their lives that may have promoted these mistakes. As for Grant , what can I say other than , I would give him a bouquet of Aster for his patience , Bluebell for his constancy , and cactus - yes cactus for his ardent love . 4 stars

JudiAnne I have this one in my audible library. One of these days I'll get around to it. I will look for your review.

Angela M I just love it so far !

Beth Yay!

Margi oh I really loved this book. I love flowers and gardening and found this women's story amazing. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did

TamElaine Beautiful review ! I love the bouquet you'd give Grant ! I agree ! He was definitely a patient, hard-loving man !

Angela M Thank you ! I know this has funny spacing . I wrote it on GR yesterday and lost it before it got posted . I had to recreate this am and I did it on my iphone and then cut and pasted it . Just can't get it corrected . Oh well , the words are there.

Beth fabulous review!

Angela M Thanks , Beth . A peach for you ( your charms are unequaled according to Victoria's dictionary ).

Beth Lol! thank you!

✿ ♥ Heather ♥ ✿ Makes me want to read it :-)

I admire you for writing this wonderful review on you iPhone. I wouldn't have had the patience! I have lost so many reviews in the past that I have made myself either write them on my TextEdit on my MacBook and then copy and paste. I also highlight and copy every couple of sentences if I am doing them directly on GRs. I still once in a while lose one to outer space or wherever fragmented sentences end up when I accidentally click the space bar, which is often, when my fingers get going. (hee hee) Making myself do this keeps me from throwing my laptop across the room when I get frustrated! (Just kidding.) I will have to listen to this one soon.

Angela M Judi,
That's the second time I've lost a review on GR. I'm going to create longer ones in Word first and keep saving . I have to work on editing this and see if I can fix if .Thanks

JudiAnne I wouldn't be concerned about editing because your beautiful review stands out above it. If you are like me and do edit it should be easy to do by bringing sentences together in edit mode.

Beth I was visiting my in-laws this week and my MIL belongs to a book club and this was the book they just read (the reason she bought it and it ended up on my Kindle where I then read it) and I was invited to attend their book club meeting yesterday for the discussion.

It was very interesting to hear this book discussed by a large group of people - gave me some additional insights into how others perceived it. It seemed to me that of the 25 or 30 people at the meeting, all had really liked it for one reason or another.

Lots of discussion about the foster care system, Meredith, Elizabeth, Hazel, Renata and of course, Victoria.

Joining their meeting made me think about the book again, how unique it is in ways, how it is slanted in ways, and how it was perceived.

Very interesting conversation!

Angela M Beth
How nice that you were able to attend , especially after having read the book so recently . I can see why there would be such a good discussion since there are as you mention so many things to think about . I kept thinking about how the system failed Victoria .
Thanks for sharing that .
Hope the weather is not too bad in NJ . So glad that you had such good weather when you were here .
We have a little over two weeks left before we go back to the tundra !

Beth Yes, it was great timing that I had just so recently read the book.

We are now back in NJ and it is FREEZING. I went out twice today to walk the dog and wondered (again) why we spend winters here - I really hate the cold!

But I read a ton when we were in Florida - lots of time by the pool with my Kindle - couldn't have asked for better weather.

Enjoy the next two weeks and hopefully spring will have sprung by the time you have come home!

Marjory I'm picking this one up this weekend. A couple of people have told me it is really good. (I like your taste in books)

Angela M Thanks, Marjory. I hope you like as much as I did. Let me know.

Kayla I love what you wrote about Grant, I think he became my favorite. The ending bothered me but only because of my recent life changing event... But I understand why it all happened.

Angela M I hope you are well , Kayla. I'm visiting family this week but will drop you a line soon.

Canadian Jen Wow! An awesome review - esp the bouquet for Grant :)

Angela M Thanks , Jen. I couldn't resist .

JudiAnne I love your review and I'm reading The Language of Flowers now. Flowers do speak to me but not on the level they speak to Victoria, I'm sure.

Angela M Thanks , Judi . I love flowers to but they don't speak to me this specifically but I really liked this book a lot and I hope you do too .

Kayla Had to laugh at the comment of flowers not speaking to you this specifically, I would feel a bit nuts if they did me, too ;-)

Angela M Haha . Hope you and your family are doing well and that you are enjoying that beautiful little one .

Margitte what a great read and a great review, Angela! I really put this book on hold for way too long and when I finally read it, it was a good experience indeed.
