The Thorn Birds

The Thorn Birds is a beautifully written Australian novel. This story spans over three generations of the Cleary family. It mainly centres around young, Meggie who is the only girl in the family. Meggie's mother only has eyes for her sons which leaves. Meggie feeling very unloved by her mother. Growing up there are many things, Meggie needs to know about life in general, but Meggie knows she can't ask her mother. So Meggie turns to the the local priest, Father Ralph de Bricassart for answers. Ralph is very fond of, Meggie and the more he see her the stronger his feelings become. He can also see that Meggie is also starting to have feelings for him and knows he must put a stop to this before it goes any further.
As the story unfolds we see the Cleary family deal with love and loss and with loss comes heartache.
I absolutely LOVED this amazing story. This is the first book I've read by, Colleen McCullough and it definitely won't be my last. The descriptions of the places in this book are incredible and you can picture it all so clearly as you are reading. This was a compelling, enjoyable and emotional read. This book took me quite awhile to get through, but it's one of those books that should not be hurried. If you love reading Classic or Historical novels then make sure this one is at the top of your list. I read this book with, Kathy a friend of mine who also loves reading. Although, Kathy read this book quite a long time ago she enjoyed just as much if not more the second time round. A truly memorable book that will stay with me for a long time to come. So if you haven't read this book PLEASE do yourself a favour and read it as you won't be disappointed. HIGHLY recommended.

Let me know when you are going to read it. I acutally bought it again the other day. The original copy i had back when i was about 20 was a second hand copy i bought and already falling apart - and i saw a new copy the other day and grabbed it and thought i would like to read it again! So when you do, i will! It has been over 20 years i would say since i read it the first time......
I just clicked on it on my Kindle Sharon and it says 16hrs!!!!! Nice big book - the bigger the better!!!!! It will be interesting to see what i can remember from sooooo long ago........
Hey Sharon!!! How's it going?? I had a productive day yesterday and am up to 87% - hard to put down now for sure... You still lovin it???
Sure did Myrna - loved that also ..... Hard to believe it was so long ago now. I'm hoping it's still available to buy so Sharon can watch it a few weeks after she finishes the book .....
Hi Kathy. I've read 30% and I'm LOVING IT. I can't belive I've not read this book, but perhaps if I had've read it years ago I might not have really appreciated it as I am now.
Myrna I've not seen the mini series and I can't find it at any of the shops so I guess I might have to try online as I really want to see it once I've finished the book.

I have just had a squiz on ebay thinking there would be lots there - but there is only one in Australia that has just been started. There is one there called the missing years - not sure what part that would be, but the complete box set contains that one also. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/THE-THORN-... Here's the link for the auction that has just started - and it's from QLD - all the other ones are from United Kingdom!!!!
Thanks Kathy. Just had a look and I've placed it on watch. It does say complete set although it seems there a number of discs to the series. So I'm not sure if this is the compete set or not.
I think from my investigation that that boxset is the complete set - because on one of the other descriptions of the same one it said it includes the missing years dvd - so i think it would have to be it.....best of luck with the auction......
Great review Sharon! I remember pinching my Mum's copy (when she wasn't looking) and reading this when it first came out - I thought it was great then. Would be fun to read it again!
Great review, I too haven't read a Colleen McCullough, but this is a great one to start with. It was one of her first books and it's been on my to read list for years!
Great review, Sharon :) I hope to read this novel in the future. I remember having watched many years ago the TV adaptation but I don't recollect any details, just the knowledge of having watched it.

It was made like early 80s. I hope it won't be so hard to find.

Looks like I'll have to purchase it online, Alejandro. Have enquired at many shops who sell DVDs and they don't have it and can't order it in for me :(

It was a mini series that was a week long that aired in 1983. It stared Richard chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Barbara Stanwyck, Christopher Plummer, Jean Simmons.
I read the book first then watched the series. It did follow the book well.
Sorry, didn't mean to jump into your conversation.

Well you will all be pleased to know that my darling hubby has bought me a copy of the movie which I knew nothing about and it should be here sometime next week. I'm sooooo excited :)

Cool! :D
Cool! :D
Great review, I must read it soon. I always buy my DVDs online as it's so convenient. Lovely hubby to get it as a surprise!!!!
Forgive me for jumping in here, but I'm thrilled to see a whole new group of fans popping up for Thorn Birds, which has always been one of my all-time favorites. So tragic, romantic, beautifully written. As for the mini-series, Richard Chamberlain as Father Ralph was so dreamy -- I fell in love with him myself! Can't believe how many years it's been since I first read it. It's one of those few books that I refused to give away in spite of many household moves.
Have any of you read Lonesome Dove (by Larry McMurtry)? That's another great read, followed by a wonderful mini-series.

All comments are welcome, Linda. I've not read Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry, but it sounds really good. Thanks for recommending it. Another one for my TBR list :)
Sharon the one I have on my shelf is Indecent Obsession, I'd gotten mixed up. But the discussion this book and thread had prompted means I will definitely read both!!
