To be honest, I am not always a fan of Pulitzer Prize winning authors/books. I sometimes wonder, whatever possessed the committee to pick them. A lot of times, the book is long (like this one), and/or over written and drawn out or not very well thought through. Or written in a way that doesn’t appeal to the average reader.
And typically, the Pulitzer Prize is given for its contribution to culture and humanity – not necessarily literary merits.
So, when this book, this winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 2023, was provided as a donation to my Little Free Library Shed, I was a bit skeptical about whether or not I would enjoy it.
Thus, when I opened the book to begin my reading of it, I found myself pleasantly surprised when I had to force myself to put it down, so I could get some sleep that first night.
What happened?
This book’s author’s writing happened.
It is an unusually-told story about interesting people. And it is a book spun from 4 narratives – a novel wrought from the tale of one man, his attempt to write his own story, his secretary’s memoir and a journal left by his deceased wife.
It is also a story, very much about wealth, family, and power set in 1930s New York.
And there is something to be said about a story about money. The value we place on it. That money can buy what we need and maybe what we want and eventually what we may dream about. But, at the same time, it makes us question, what really is money?
The author shared…
“The book is to an enormous extent about this man who's trying to control a narrative. And this is something that I found about wealth in general and wealth in America in particular. Great fortunes have the ability to distort and warp the reality around themselves. Furthermore, they have the power to align, to bend reality according to their own designs. I think, in fact, the greatest luxury good today out there is not, you know, mansions or yachts. It is reality itself.”
And the telling of this story, was done in such a way, that intrigued me as a reader. With…Lyrical prose. Complex but fascinating characters. Expert plotting.
But mostly, it was exquisite in its storytelling.
So, to say the least, I was happy to find that this Pulitzer Prize book was a worthy reading experience. For me. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
Interestingly enough, like most Pulitzer Prize winning books, there are mixed reviews. I am not surprised.
4.5 stars rounded up.

Quotes Karen Liked
“I know the days ahead of me are fewer than those I have left behind. There is no escaping this most basic fact of accounting. A certain amount of time is allotted to each of us. How much, only God knows. We cannot invest it. We cannot hope for a return of any kind. All we can do is spend it, second by second, decade by decade, until it runs out. Still, even if our days on this Earth are limited, we can always, through toil and industry, hope to extend our influence into the future. And so it is that, having lived my life with an eye set on posterity in the hopes of improving the lives of later generations, I enter these remaining years of mine not with nostalgia for all that is gone but with a sense of excitement for what is yet to come.”

I feel the same, Karen, about Pulitzer or any kind of winners. I always find myself disappointed but this actually sounds like something I’d like. The book called for you and you answered…. Super cool you didn’t ignore it. I’ll look for this. Never heard of the author or title

I did not know this because award noteriety means little to me too. Most such books or films are about social injustice, sadness, war, abuse, violence.... I can't bear negativity and need to keep reading and films fun.
I am glad you loved this without expecting to. It is a wonderful feeling.

Nice review!
Reminds me of some academy award movies. Beautiful cinematography, great acting, but long, and/or over written and drawn out. But with a contribution to culture and humanity to what they want people to believe and support.

Karen, a lovely review of this beautiful book. And when it comes to your Little Free Library, it is perfect. Some time you may want explore Hernan Diaz’s debut book, “In the Distance.” It is stunning.
Karen I never know where you get the time to read so many books! I loved your review, do love your reviews as I find them honest and you really give us readers a good understanding of a particular book etc. I really enjoy reading your perspective on different books. Being a lover of books, I’m trying this year to really read a lot of different books and to stop gravitating to my usual ones. As in my receipt Harlan Coben book, I love his writing and have read a lot of his books over the years. But the last 2 books I haven’t enjoyed at all especially the last one. I don’t know if it’s me or the book, I feel it’s the book. I want a book that I can’t put down or don’t want too. I look forward to reading many more of your reviews.

Exactly Steve! And thank you! Sometimes it is the unknown little movie that we watch and wonder why no one noticed - and we say, this one should have gotten all the awards for being so perfect because it was so watchable! 🥰

It might be time to take a break from Coben Caroline. He may be becoming too formulaic for you. That happens to me sometimes when I love an author too much, and their writing starts to wane on me. It might be Time to move on to someone else. For me, I read a lot because I now have the time. When I worked full time, and I was raising my kids, I never had the time to read as much. But now, I love reading and writing reviews, because I can. I hope my choices of books encourage you to try new ones, too! Thank you for coming by and commenting. I appreciate you! 🥰

Marvelous and refreshing review....I probably would sigh and not even bother with certain movies or books if they are raved about++ or classified as the prize winners etc...I think to myself "hhmm" what out in left field might this be I wonder? Or whatever possessed a panel to choose this particular etc? I am rather cynical in these years it seems ;) I tend to gravitate towards unusual at times, obscure, and whatever appeals to me. Glad to know it was an actually enjoyable story for you Karen! Money certainly can change people at times.....as the so so so often misquoted Bible verse rings true that the LOVE of ,not money itself, is the root of all evil as many will go to whatever lengths, even criminal of course, to obtain and retain it to the point of greed...even though none of us can take it with us after this life, as short and uncertain as that is too!..................I went on a bit of spiel there it appears! baha......anyway, my two cents worth ;)

And that is the point, Cindy! Money is all that you share here - people do obsess about it - and make it more important than it needs to be! Of course, we all would like to be comfortable in it - and make sure we can be sustained in a comfortable life - but mostly, people want more - and I think that is the point here. So, what you share - makes a lot of sense - and you didn't even read the book - LOL! I think you and I would make great friends! 🥰

I am so glad you liked this one, Karen! I bought a used copy from Thrift Books but haven’t gotten to it yet. I like your free little library—you’ve found a few gems in it!! 🥰📚

Yes indeed...money helps big time and is a bonus if one can be comfortable no doubt; I try to be content no matter what and be grateful ,so when blessed I will use it to share with others less fortunate; but anyway...........what do you mean we would be great friends! lol....we already are sure my "Book Sista" ;) *hugs*......
Your replies are one of the aspects I look forward to reading here! You are so gracious in not just writing "thanks" , which is fine even to be acknowledged but so interesting as you also interact with a conversational type response.

I’m currently reading Trust. I’m not very far into it, but very much enjoying the writing! Many well written, thoughtful novels get mixed reviews because they may not have large audience appeal, so I try not to have a lower GR rating limit my reading (Actually, I think Trust’s rating is still within the GR rating range of most books.)

Ahhh...Betsey you are so thoughtful. I know, I am so lucky in my neighborhood. I never know what to expect, and so very grateful that they challenge me with the books they bring to the LFL. So, why not give these books a read! Right?! 🥰 Thank you so much for your kind words.

Your review has certainly given me much to ponder. If reality is the greatest luxury, what does it mean for those who can’t afford it? It’s also interesting to consider how the author’s storytelling style managed to captivate you despite your initial skepticism. Thank you for sharing your wonderful insights, Karen.☺️

Yes, Dusk. It was truly an interesting journey for me. I have definitely opened my mind to allow myself to read outside my typical genre of mysteries. I think many books aren’t written with the average reader in mind. I’m wondering when did 416 pages become “long” in the minds of so many?

I would say for me personally, that in the past few years, I have found I am reluctant to consider much over 350 at the most....rather at 300 or less. I just don't have the same patience nor interest if too "long" as you say......There are ooodles of fabulous books I would dearly love to be able to enjoy but may never get to perhaps. But, hats off to those of you who aren't fazed by length etc :)
