The Waking Fire (The Draconis Memoria, #1)

this book genuinely caters to everything i like and want in a fantasy book like it's actually wild how anthony ryan took the premise of this straight out of my brain. we got the crazy, imaginative plot; the 3 (3 is the magic number of povs in an epic fantasy book sorry i don't make the rules) op, likeable, and competent (!!) main characters; dragons (!!); and the writing style with a sprinkle of dry humor.
the ending was really good; i'm surprised at how neatly ryan tied up all the loose ends, and the plot twist went all the way back to the very first scene! i was able to guess some of the plot twists, but then it went so much deeper and some of it was actually really surprising! and the last scene has me so excited to start the next book (view spoiler) .
overall, i liked all the various elements of this book, and my only complaint is that the worldbuilding felt overly complex where made-up words and names were literally being dropped every page without any explanation, but we ball. like i actually didn't care that much because the plot was so straightforward that i could still understand most of what was happening anyway. and also it was clear that ryan spent so much time working through the logistics, and because of that, the worldbuilding and plot were so tight, which reads so well.
