CHAPTER XXXV. WHEREIN MATTERS MAKE SOME PROGRESS, BUT NOT MUCH.
Charlotte attempted to broaden the scope, to touch on politics, economics, lower class, write from the close third person perspective from different men. And she failed spectacularly.
The only time this book is bearable is when it focuses on the friendship of two heroines and those are a few pages. Everything else is just laughable. The only good, poor character basically has the personality of a golden retriever. Every male character she writes sounds the same. The dialogue is ridiculous. Oh and the melodrama, the whole second half is never-ending ridiculous melodrama and for me to be able to appreciate it must be dialed up a notch. Go big, go The Monk levels, bring out the flying devil.
Also this is a supposedly social novel but really, what reality is this? Charlotte in the end of the day is interested in romance and this book has not one, but two! Both very badly written, but the more the better?
Still, it’s Charlotte, even when she’s judgemental and patronizing, she has a talent for readable prose. Until the dullness, boredom and ridiculousness hits you and you just pray for this book to end.
(Great point in the beginning, but then I feel called out by her by the end.)
This sloppy novel just barely held together with very questionable scotch tape. Until it didn't.

"If men could see us as we really are, they would be a little amazed; but the cleverest, the acutest men are often under an illusion about women. They do not read them in a true light; they misapprehend them, both for good and evil. Their good woman is a queer thing, half doll, half angel; their bad woman almost always a fiend. Then to hear them fall into ecstasies with each other's creations—worshipping the heroine of such a poem, novel, drama—thinking it fine, divine! Fine and divine it may be, but often quite artificial—false as the rose in my best bonnet there. If I spoke all I think on this point, if I gave my real opinion of some first-rate female characters in first-rate works, where should I be? Dead under a cairn of avenging stones in half an hour."
"Shirley, you chatter so, I can't fasten you. Be still. And, after all, authors' heroines are almost as good as authoresses' heroes."
"Not at all. Women read men more truly than men read women. I'll prove that in a magazine paper some day when I've time; only it will never be inserted. It will be 'declined with thanks,' and left for me at the publisher's."
"To be sure. You could not write cleverly enough. You don't know enough. You are not learned, Shirley."
"God knows I can't contradict you, Cary; I'm as ignorant as a stone. There's one comfort, however: you are not much better."
(Great point in the beginning, but then I feel called out by her by the end.)

I am not surprised, there's NOTHING to remember from this book! NOTHING! How is this written by the same author who wrote incredible Jane Eyre and Villette, I'l never know

Love Villette, that one is slow, very interior and moody. This is just a mess, the pacing is off, characters are ridiculous, the revelations are eye roll-worthy, the melodramatic letters and musings gave me high blood sugar levels.

Hehe sorry! Maybe you'll be able to get more out of this one? I lost a friend on goodreads over this review, so people feel passionately about it! 🤷♀️

Isn't it odd how feelings about books can be so emotive? I mean, we don't break up with a friend because we have different opinions about, say, smoked salmon (delicious) or oysters (vile)!

The strangest thing is that we had conversations on this site a few times. I mean, if it's a silent friend I never interacted with who had a spring cleaning, then whatever, bye bye. But I was so surprised that I even reread my review (and I never do it, they cringe me out!) to see maybe I was offensive or something. And I don't think I was. But I say to myself - it's obviously not about me, it's them :)

But hasn't Charlotte seen my raving 5 star reviews of Jane Eyre and Villette??? I gushed and gushed about them! Come on Charlotte, get the bigger picture!

Here's to us being free to say what we truly think of a book, nastya!
I remember liking this one a lot when I read it;-)

And I’m glad you did! See, not judging you for liking it, you aren’t judging me for disliking it. Can we still be friends having a lot in common in our tastes in other books? I think so!

Hi there!
1. I never mentioned you by name
2. Making fun? By saying I'm sad that I was unfriended because of the review? By not even mentioning by whom? How?
3. Sorry for making this connection. I just posted the bad review of the book you loved and was unfriended in the next hour. It was just the only reason I could think of since we did have conversations but maybe you wanted to unfriend me for some time and my review just reminded you about me? But you can see why I would think that, right? Agin, never mentioned your name or any details about you.
4. Didn't know that my messages are closed, phew, I was worried I was the only one who wasn't getting all that creepy spam with "hey girl!" 😀
5. No bad blood, just a tiny sadness the day it happened cause I thought we were better friends. Again, never called you out by name.
Have a great day.

What passive aggressiveness are you talking about? I didn’t call you Charlotte’s ghost, go check. Don’t assign me feelings I don’t feel. I explained why I assigned this motivation to anonymous person, I don’t know what you want from me. You guessed right maybe because you unfriended me, no? I don’t see rocket science here. I have no idea who else you unfriended, I don’t stalk anyone.
The only aggression I feel here is from your accusations. Sorry,, no bad blood, please you can forget about me existing, I’m like Howl. I Have a great day!

Whatever, Happy Easter and no bad feelings today! 😊"
I wasn't saying you stalked me, jesus christ, what's happening? Is this some alternative reality? I said I didn't know who else you deleted because I wasn't stalking your friend list. I wasn't implying anything, ffs
I also did not lie, I told the truth that was available to me, you told me I'm wrong and I never doubled down on my version of events and accepted yours. You do know what lying is, right?
You are accusing me, that's just what's happening.
Happy every holiday you celebrate

"Charlotte attempted to broaden the scope" – BAHAHAHA that actually made me laugh. As one of the few people who absolutely hated Jane Eyre, I never wanted to give her another go ... seems like I'm not missing out on much. ;)

Oh no, poor Charlotte! I remember your sizzling hate for Jane Eyre 😀 But I still think Villette is awesome
