Can I say this was better than the original?
Does that make me a bad person? I don't know. I had my ups and downs with Sandman, and even so, it's hard to argue that it's anything but a classic.
But I thought Overture was such a tight, well-crafted story and I just loved it.
The artwork in the original Sandman is...classic. That's my nice way of saying that while I respect it, it sometimes made my eyes bleed.
But J.H. Williams III has created such amazing visuals for this that I was blown away from the opening pages.
Gorgeous pages. Wow. I just...WOW. Zero complaints from me.
The spoiler free gist is that this is the story that happened immediately before the original Sandman starts. Did you want to know how Morpheus ended up getting sucked into the trap set for Death? Well, here you go.

Purists might gasp! But, no. Not a bad person at all. Sandman’s a classic - but overture was modern, awesome art and a proverbial breath of fresh air. Love your review.

Loved the art but found this one a bit of a slog. Might give it another go next year.

I ended up enjoying the overall experience and being really glad I finally got all the way through it, but it's not one that I'll buy for my shelf to re-read.

I have to say that i totally agree with you. The story of the sandman is classic, but the art is very much a product of it's time and the colors...I kind of wish a new version of sandman would be released with new art. I actually read the annotated version as well in black and white, and that does look better.

That would be amazing! I associate the art with the story but there were times that I just...blech. And the story really isn't all that perfect, either, it's just such a classic that it feels like you need to read it. I'm certainly not sorry I did, but this one is so much better.
