Our Daughter's Bones is the first book in the Detective Mackenzie Price police procedural/crime thriller series. In this story we meet Mackenzie and learn about her past. She has a huge secret, especially considering she is now a Detective with the police force in Lakemore, where she lived until she and her mother committed a crime. Highschool student, Erica Perez, disappeared a year ago and no trace has been found. Exactly one year later, her best friend, Abigail Correia (Abby) disappears on her way home from school. Abby's mother is upset that her daughter is not being treated the same way as Erica, the daughter of a rich Lakemore resident. Mack, is sure these abductions are related and the more she digs, the more distraught she becomes at what she finds out.

I enjoyed this book with it's twisty mystery. For a small town, it sure has it's share of secrets. The mystery and police procedural parts of this book are told in the present, but Mack's memories were told in flashbacks. Mack’s own mental health seemed to be an issue – she was certainly flawed – but none of her colleagues were aware of her issues. She is also dealing with problems in her marriage. Sterling seems to be the perfect husband, but there is something going on between them that is revealed by the end of the book. The plot was intriguing and the dynamics, especially between Mack and Nick, fascinating. The characters are well written and developed and I look forward to seeing this team working together in future books. I have to say that I had no idea what was going to happen and how this crime would all be sorted out, but it really threw me for a loop. It was a bit out there, but all in all, this was a twisty mystery that had me intrigued. I will read more by Ruhi Choudhary. A good debut.
