How many secrets can one town bury?

When she was just twelve years old, Mackenzie Price came home to find her father bleeding to death on the kitchen floor. She will never forget that night, nor what her mother asked her to do…

Twenty years later, Detective ‘Mack’ Price is back in Lakemore, despite vowing never to return. Determined to atone for the sins of the past, she is unstoppable in her quest for justice.

When eighteen-year-old Abigail Correia goes missing, Mack is convinced that the case is linked to Erica Perez, who disappeared exactly one year before. Unlike Abby, Erica is the daughter of one of the town’s most powerful men, but still no trace of her has been found.

As Mack endeavours to find Abby and bring her back alive, she and her team unearth a shocking secret at the heart of this small town. But that is not the only secret that lurks beneath the surface, as Mack knows only too well…

The first book in the Detective Mack Price series, Hidden Lake is a haunting and utterly unputdownable crime thriller, perfect for fans of Lisa Regan, Angela Marsons and Karin Slaughter.

The trauma when Mackenzie Price was only twelve years old followed her on a daily basis – it didn’t take much to trigger the memories that she’d never told a soul about since then. Twenty years on, she was a good detective with Lakemore PD – nicknamed Mad Mack – and when a young woman went missing, twelve months to the day from her best friend’s disappearance, Mack was determined to find the person responsible. But with work and digging deep, they discovered other girls had also gone missing – always in September. What was going on? Why was it happening?

Mack’s life with Sterling, her husband, was a fragile one and Mack’s mind and body kept him at a distance. Her life revolved around her work to the point of ignoring everything else, even her own health. Sterling was worried about her, but she pushed him further away. Her fellow detectives put more and more on her shoulders, believing she would find the answers…

Hidden Lake is the 1st in Detective Mackenzie Price series – and her debut - by Ruhi Choudhary and I quite enjoyed it. I found the repetition of the events to Mack’s past became a bit wearing after awhile as it was quite detailed at the beginning. Mack’s own mental health seemed to be an issue – she was certainly flawed – but no one else (of her peers) appeared to see it. And the relationship between Sterling and Mack was nothing less than weird! The plot was intriguing and the dynamics, especially between Mack and Nick, fascinating. A good crime read for the author’s debut. Recommended.

With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

This is book 1 in the Mackenzie Price series. It started out as a good read for the start but it slowed down a lot and was nearing a 3 star read for me. It was lacking on the fast paced thriller front for a while, could have been better if a bit shorter, and had one seriously questionable police investigation technique, which could have had significant consequences on an investigation - that really p'd me off for an otherwise decent police procedural.

When things picked up again, boy did they pick up! Extremely good for the last third, an all time shocking twist (and then some more!) and a HUGE cliffhanger which obvi I went and started book 2 straight away!

The FMC is seriously unlikeable, but grows on you in some ways. One of the MMC makes up for the dislike of the FMC.

A big positive for me was the writing style. Easy to read, even if slow at times.

What a fast paced and twisted read this is. The first book in a new series. Mack is a flawed detective who has her own secrets. This is a gripping page turner. The ending was a little far fetched but it's still a decent debut novel. The book is well written. The characters are well rounded and believable. The story covers: violent death, rape, mental health issues and domestic abuse. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in this series.

I would like to thank NetGalley, Bookouture and the author Ruhi Choudhary for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

BLOG TOUR REVIEW

Review for 'Hidden Lake' by Ruhi Choudhary

Read and reviewed via NetGalley for Bookouture publishers and Bookouture anonymous

Release date August 19th 2020

This is the first book that Ruhi Choudhary has written and it is the first novel in the 'Detective Mackenzie Price' series. This will not be my last and I can only hope the very talented Ruhi is already typing away!!!

I was originally drawn to this book by its beautiful cover, interesting title & intriguing blurb. I was also excited as it stated that it is 'perfect for fans of Karin Slaughter and Angela Marsons'. These are 2 of my favourite authors so it will be interesting to see if it lives up to them. I must admit I was also biased due to the publisher being Bookouture. I have yet to read a book published by Bookouture that I haven't enjoyed. Hopefully this won't be the first... Watch this space! (Written before I started reading the book).

This novel consists of a prologue, 78 chapters and an epilogue which are a nice length so that you can read 'just one more chapter' before bed...OK, I know yeah right, but still just in case!

This book is written from third person point of view and the protagonist is Mackenzie. It is set in the United States.

Wow, Wow just WOW!!! What an explosive start to what promises to be an epic series!!!! If I didn't know this was her first book there is no way I would have guessed it was. What an amazing first novel!!!

I knew I was going to love the characters from the first page and that didn't change throughout. I thought Mackenzie was a fantastic, strong female lead, always a bonus having a female lead being one myself!! Nick was brilliant, absolutely loved her team and they all worked well with their different personalities. I really cannot wait to read more about them. They were exactly what a good crime book needs, a mix of funny, serious and I just couldn't get enough of them.

The storyline itself had me hook, like and sinker from the start and kept me on the edge of my seat as well as up at night flipping through the pages that I just couldn't put down. Packed with suspense, secrets, crime, lies, secrets, friendship and the BIG BANG at the end. I thought I had my suspicions of who was up to what but I was proven wrong and damn lady I DID NOT EXPECT that nucleur ending!!! Where did that come from!!! Just mega wow!!! Completely left me speechless and sitting there with my mouth hanging open like a dog. Cliffhanger much!!! I could not compliment this book enough, it just had everything!!!

The whole thing was brilliantly written and although it was mainly set in 2018 there were nicely woven flashbacks from 1997 to 2014 included which were all in the right places. The descriptions put me right next to Mackenzie and I was just completely lost in the story.

The description was completely accurate saying it is perfect for fans of Karin Slaughters and Angela Marsons. I would like to add that fans of C. L Taylor and Carol Wyer or any other amazing (and my top) authors will absolutely sink their teeth into this.

You Ruhi Choudhary have just made my top 10 authors and that is NOT an easy list to get onto!! I cannot wait for more of your books and to read more of the characters I have grown to love.

Overall if you are looking for a heart racing, page turning psychological crime that will leave you shocked and demanding more this is the book for you.

Genres covered include Mystery, Thriller, Crime fiction, psychological thriller, and Police procedural.

I would recommend this book to EVERYONE!!!

414 pages.

This book is 99p to purchase on kindle via Amazon which I think is an absolute bargain for this book!!! What are you waiting for?

Rated 5/5 (I LOVED IT) on Goodreads, Instagram, Amazon UK and Amazon US and on over 30 Facebook pages plus my blog on Facebook.

The tag line, "How many secrets can one town bury?" is certainly descriptive of the plot and events taking place in Lakeland, Washington, in this first installment of a new crime thriller series.

Told in a narrative style that goes back and forth in time from 20 years ago to present day, the protagonist, Detective Mackenzie Price, has a history in this town. The main focus of this story is on the Lakeland Police Department investigating the disappearance of a local teenager, 18-year-old Abigail Correia. Almost at once, it becomes apparent that there is a link to another girl's disappearance just one year earlier. Obviously, something bad is going on in Lakeland and perhaps those responsible are too big to bring down. NO SPOILERS.

A couple of things put me off in this book. Mack is really in need of psychological help with her guilt, flashbacks, and crazy dreams. I did not like her character at all, but she is so typical of those in this genre - a hot mess. Surely there must be some female detectives out there who are really good at their jobs and mentally healthy as well? There are a LOT of characters in this book and hard to keep track of them all. I was hoping to find an ability to relate to at least one of them but the jury is still out. And, then there was the ending. OH COME ON! I will have to go ahead and read the second book just to see what the author does with all these dangling ends in Mack's personal life. As far as the case in this book, well I was not surprised, and the pace was fast so it was easy to read in a single sitting.

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

Hidden Lake is the first instalment in the Detective Mackenzie ”Mack” Price series and all things considered this is a promising opening episode. Mack Price is a detective currently employed by the Lakemore, Washington Police Department when she is assigned the case of eighteen-year-old Abigail Correia who is missing. It bears all the hallmarks of a case from a year ago: the disappearance of Abigail’s high school friend Erica Perez and given they both vanished from the same small-town community it seems unlikely that two different perpetrators are responsible. Then deep in the local woods, a body is discovered. We also learn that Mack had vowed never to return to Lakemore due to an incident that changed her life forever. She was only twelve years old when she returned home from school to find her violent alcoholic father bleeding profusely on the kitchen floor; her mother, who suffered terribly at his hands, had eventually snapped and killed him. They buried him in the woods; the same woods Mack has to search for missing Abigail. Despite being a survivor she frequently has flashbacks to the traumatic experience which still impacts her so much to this day.

This is a captivating cross between a police procedural and a thriller and from the opening pages, it had no problem holding my attention. There is plenty of intrigue, excitement and a plethora of twists and turns; there is also a superb use of misdirection through well placed red herrings that lead you into one way of thinking before ripping the rug out from under you and you realise you've been fooled good and proper. The plot is explosive and the fact that it's told primarily from Mack’s perspective allows you to effortlessly become immersed in the story which makes it a more enjoyable experience. It also allows the author to provide a backstory for Mack the main protagonist and central figure and it's quite a harrowing life she has led. Mack is a broken woman but her determination to get justice for the victims shines through and I particularly appreciated that, despite the majority of the police force almost ignoring Abby Correia’s disappearance because she is from ”the wrong side of town” and the majority of resources going to Erica’s investigation due to being part of the rich elite, Mack treats them both as equally important. Many thanks to Bookouture for an ARC.

There is a LOT going on in this book, a debut for this author.

Mack Price is a tough, organised police officer who has had a great deal of trauma in her early life. She marries Sterling and things are good for a while but then the wheels falls off. She spends most of this book pushing him away and I got annoyed with her behaviour towards him - it was very teenage girl-esque. It wasn't until later that I understood why she was so angry with him, but in a mature relationship it seems to me that you need to discuss things, not play mindgames with your spouse.

The case is very gripping and lots of different strands come together in a clever way. Some scary situations too!

This book has some very good bones but is let down by strange turns of phrase and idioms not being used correctly. There is a LOT of pouting going on in this book (and that is by the men!) and I was thrown off right at the beginning when the girl was described as having tiny feet - and it turns out she was 12 years old! I don't know about other people, but my feet were nearly the same size as my mothers by the time I was 12..... The descriptions of the facial expressions versus what they were trying to convey was really odd and jarring and interfered with my enjoyment of the book overall. There were a lot of people at Mack's workplace who got overly bent out of shape - I wouldn't like to work with a group of police officers who were so touchy, myself.

I don't like to be negative to debut authors because it is tough writing a book, I know this. However, this book could have benefitted from having a lot more editorial input, I feel. I liked the book, but I am not inclined to read another by this author because of the abovementioned issues. Even with the cliffhanger at the end of this book! Sorry :(

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture.

Quite an interesting police procedural with Mackenzie at the helm. Disappearing teens had me interested at the blurb, and the author Ruhi Choudhry’s writing kept my curiosity marching ahead with a swift pace.

Missing teens who were best friends saw Mackenzie finding the link between them. She was known Mad Mac for nothing. I liked how thorough she was in her investigation. Ably supported by Nick, it was wonderful to see the budding and sometimes hidden chemistry between them. And Mac was married. Not only did the crime get to me, her personal life too did.

The beginning was explosive to say the least; it sure gripped my eyeballs and made it pop. Never seen a cop go through this kinda past in any of the police procedural. And this year, I have read a lot. So that was saying something. The story had subplots over a great plotline, the twists kept coming left, right, and center. Mackenzie’s compelling way of investigation kept me thoroughly invested in the story.

What could I say about Mac?! She was flawed, her past seemed to have sealed many a secret inside her. Her childhood saw her avoiding confrontation in the adult life. I wanted to poke her to make her face the truth. At least, let me know the truth of her relationships.

The writing allowed me to don the Detective cap up to a certain point. I got overly involved in the story, so I had to just enjoy the book and not solve the crime. And I couldn’t guess the perp. The ending was unbelievable. It made me dance in joy and to quote my friends in the blogging world. I was pretty chuffed.

Great plotline, clues and red herrings, many twists, a flawed main character with determined to solve the mystery at any cost made this an entertaining read.

Astoundingly, jaw-droppingly brilliant. Hard to believe this is a debut. The twists keep on coming, one after the other; the pace never lets up and as a reader you are on tenterhooks, frantically turning the pages while at the same time not wanting the book to end because it's just SO good. What a character Mackenzie is! Real, flawed and so very relatable. From the stunning first chapter to the gasp-inducing last one, this was a book I just couldn't put down;
a book and series that stands out by a mile. An author I am so glad to have discovered and who I will be shouting about to all and sundry. Please do yourself a favour and read this amazing book. It will transport you, take you away from all that is happening in the world right now. Unmissable. A genius work of art.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Hidden Lake, the first novel to feature Detective Mackenzie Price of the Lakemore, Washington PD.

Twenty years ago Mack came home from school to find her dad dead on the kitchen floor, now she is back in Lakemore working as a detective. Her latest case is the disappearance of 18 year old Abigail Correia, exactly one year after her friend Erica Perez was last seen. The town is hiding secrets.

I enjoyed Hidden Lake which is an interesting start to the series with an explosive plot and several good twists. The novel is told from Mack’s point of view almost exclusively so the reader gets up close and personal with her character. This has its good and bad points. I like this style of narrative as it allows the reader to get involved in the investigation without any supplementary knowledge and try to work out the solution. No, I didn’t get it right but I had plenty of fun trying. It also allows the reader to get stuck in and concentrate. On the downside the novel over concentrates on Mack and her mental state with not only present day flashbacks but whole chapters devoted to important events in her past. I feel it gets tedious after a while.

I enjoyed the plot with its many twists and absolute bombshell final sentences. It is, however, very American and I found it hard to empathise with some of it. Lakemore is a high school football town where the stars, both past and present get special treatment. Apparently success on the pitch brings much needed money to the town. I liked the dynamic of how this plays out and found it interesting, especially as the former players all seem to be part of the town’s monied elite. I also liked how the author leads the reader down certain paths, only to blindside them later with misdirection. It’s very well done.

Mack is too traumatised by her past to be a sympathetic protagonist but she’s to be admired for her dogged determination and evenhandedness in her investigation. Abby Correia might not come from the rich side of town like Erica Perez but she’s equally important to Mack, if not to the rest of the department. The reader also gets to know Abby through her diary excerpts and she’s not as she presents in public. At times I couldn’t believe what I was reading.

Hidden Lake is a promising start to the series so I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read.

This is the first in a new series with Detective Mackenzie Price and was an enjoyable read.
Mack is called in to investigate the disappearance of a teenage girl Abby. Her disappearance is quickly linked to her best friend who disappeared a year before. Mack is still trying to come to terms with her difficult past. This was a good read and piqued my interest for the next book.
I didn’t love it and was unsure on the realism as Mack comes across as mentally unstable but no one seems to doubt her ability to be a detective. With the current climate making mental health much easier to discuss I’m not sure this would not of been addressed by her superiors.
I enjoyed it enough to read book two though to see where the story goes.

Hidden Lake is the opening novel in a new series that features Detective Mackenzie (Mack) Price of the Lakemore, Washington Police Department.

Twenty years ago, Mack returned home from school to find her violent dad bleeding excessively on the kitchen floor. Now she is back in Lakemore working as a detective. Eighteen year old Abigail Correia has disappeared exactly one year after her friend Erica Perez was last seen, and Mack is leading the investigation. As the town conceals facts and secrets, can she find Abby?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Hidden Lake with its explosive plot and many twists. The novel is told almost entirely from Mack’s viewpoint so I got to know her character well. This style of narrative worked as it allowed me to get involved in the investigation without any additional knowledge. Running parallel with the investigation, the novel concentrates on Mack and her mental state using present day flashbacks to reveal important events in her past. I enjoyed the explosive plot with its many twists and cliffhanger sentences. The author, Ruhi Choudhary used red herrings and misdirection with great effect, leading me down certain paths, only to blindside me later. Protagonist Mack is heavily traumatised by her past and she’s to be admired for her open-mindedness and determination.

Hidden Lake is a fantastic début and a very compelling start to the series, and I confidently recommend it as a worthy read.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Bookouture via NetGalley. This review is my own unbiased opinion.

This was an interesting read with a good mystery. Taking place in the fictional small town of Lakemore, WA, the story starts with the disappearance of Abigail, who happens to be the best friend of another girl who disappeared a year before. The detective leading the investigation is Mackenzie (Mack), and the reader also gets to learn about her background.

The book was pretty fast paced the mystery unfolds quickly. While I didn't figure out all of what was going on until later in the book, there were clues throughout based on Mack's vocal opinions on certain issues. While the current story-line was good, a lot of the book went back to flashbacks and memories from Mack's traumatic childhood, and I honestly could have done without those. It felt repetitive to me and didn't add anything to my understanding of her character. I also felt frustrated with the way she handled her personal relationships with both her husband and her friend, Nick, and couldn't understand why she did some of the things she did.

There are twists and turns as the book goes on, some that I foresaw more than others. While the outcome is a little far-fetched, it wasn't so much so that it felt unbelievable, and I liked that. The final twist made me very happy and raised the book from a 3.5 to a 4 star vote for me.

I'd recommend this book to those who like mysteries and police procedurals. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Very slow, annoying and boring until the last 80 pages, and then still not all that good. I'd go into the many reasons I didn't much care for this book, but they would all be spoilers. Not sure why there are so many high ratings for this book. In fact, I had decided not to read anymore from this author...until the final page. Because I already have the next two books in this series on my read pile, I decided to go ahead with book 2. But if it is as boring, annoying and slow as book 1 is, I won't be sticking with it or the rest of the series.

Our Daughter's Bones is the first book in the Detective Mackenzie Price police procedural/crime thriller series. In this story we meet Mackenzie and learn about her past. She has a huge secret, especially considering she is now a Detective with the police force in Lakemore, where she lived until she and her mother committed a crime. Highschool student, Erica Perez, disappeared a year ago and no trace has been found. Exactly one year later, her best friend, Abigail Correia (Abby) disappears on her way home from school. Abby's mother is upset that her daughter is not being treated the same way as Erica, the daughter of a rich Lakemore resident. Mack, is sure these abductions are related and the more she digs, the more distraught she becomes at what she finds out.

I enjoyed this book with it's twisty mystery. For a small town, it sure has it's share of secrets. The mystery and police procedural parts of this book are told in the present, but Mack's memories were told in flashbacks. Mack’s own mental health seemed to be an issue – she was certainly flawed – but none of her colleagues were aware of her issues. She is also dealing with problems in her marriage. Sterling seems to be the perfect husband, but there is something going on between them that is revealed by the end of the book. The plot was intriguing and the dynamics, especially between Mack and Nick, fascinating. The characters are well written and developed and I look forward to seeing this team working together in future books. I have to say that I had no idea what was going to happen and how this crime would all be sorted out, but it really threw me for a loop. It was a bit out there, but all in all, this was a twisty mystery that had me intrigued. I will read more by Ruhi Choudhary. A good debut.

What a page-turner! It’s my first book by Ruhi Choudhary, but it won’t be my last! Can’t wait for the follow-up to this book, since this one ended on an intriguing cliffhanger. This book gave me some vibes from both Beartown and Twin Peaks.

A girl went missing a year ago. Her best friend went missing a year after that. Bones are found. Detective Mackenzie Price is scared. The bones are were she helped her mother bury her father, back when she was twelve. A lot of suspicious things are going on in her hometown, a town obsessed with its sports team, and controlled by a few big shots. It keeps on getting stranger... At the same time Mackenzie is dealing with a cheating husband, and is tormented by her past.

A great start to a new series. Well-developed characters I want to get to know better. A town filled with secrets, and quirky people. What’s not to like? The book is well-written, it has a great plot, and the text is flowing so nicely that I had to finish it in one go. 4,5 stars.

I thought this was reasonably good. Mackenzie wasn't the most likable heroine, and the pacing lagged in a few places. But that epilogue..............wow I have rarely been so surprised. That alone will move me forward in the series.

3.5 stars!

This is definitely a fantastic start to the Mackenzie Price series. I love Mack as a fierce female detective who refuses to back down when it comes to solving cases and getting justice. It is evident from early on that Mack is broken and has had a lot to overcome in her life, but that made her even more gritty and someone I loved to root for.

The plot is propulsive, which I think the short chapters really helps. You get just enough information each chapter to hook you but not the onslaught that makes you go back and reread.

Overall, this is a great debut, and I am intrigued to see how the series continues.

Thank you to Bookouture for the blog tour invite and providing a review copy. This did not influence my review. All opinions are my own.

3.5 stars, rounded up

I really liked this book and the mystery was very well thought out. Ruhi has a knack for writing and there's a lot of potential in her books.

The only issue I had with this book was the pacing. In the first half of the book it feels like there's too much going on. There are too many subplots with the husband and best friend that seem to take away from the mystery and drag the first half of the book. I think if those subplots had maybe been pushed to the end, or not been as cryptic it would've made for a more engaging beginning as opposed to the more engaging ending.

The cliffhanger was really good though. Was not expecting and definitely want to read Book 2 to see what that's all about.

I think I found a new suspense/Cop thriller series! The plot, storyline, and character development leave me wanting more. I can’t wait to see how the characters of Mackenzie & Nick develop.
Small town USA where football is centre and the players are worshiped by the community…. But all small towns have thier dark side - in this case, girls are going missing. Who is to blame? Is the culprit being protected because of social status?

4 stelle abbondanti.

3.5 stars for this one. Really enjoyed reading this with a nice twist at the end. Looking forward to reading the next one.

Mackenzie Price is a detective in Lakemore, a town forever defined by its football team. When a high school student goes missing she is assigned the case and links it to another missing girl from the year before and then a body is found.

Mack is a survivor, her father was a violent alcoholic who beat and abused her mother until she finally snapped and killed him. With the case leading nowhere and problems with her marriage Detective Price finds her memories overwhelming her regularly and knows she has to hold it all together if she's to do her job properly.

I enjoyed this but there was an awful lot going on and I had to go back to find out who people were a few times which is never a good thing. The story was told in two timeframes and I felt some of the background could have been saved until book two. The main protagonists aren't as fully formed as they could be but hopefully they will continue to evolve but if Mack still has as many flashbacks as this time she could be out of a job! There is a cliffhanger of an ending which did surprise me. It should make a very good part of the next installment.

I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who is looking for a new series to get their teeth into.

I guess I have two reasons why I will probably read the next book… because of the ending and Mackenzie ‘s decision with Sterling. The book itself was decent but MacKenzie as lead detective had some severe mental health issues. Also the teenager Abby was quite the detective herself . A little too unbelievable at times. This books showed that the past usually catches up with people and individuals we think we know often are deceitful and only concerned for themselves.

So this is a new series with a female detective known as Mad Mak. once again it is the stroy of the damaged detective though her trauma is pretty bad. Though I think the author overplayed her PTSD and her issues with her husband. At a certain point I was screaming in my head" just talk to him". That being said it was an enjoyable mystery and I think this series has a lot of potential. Though also not a fan of the big last page drop!
