did not like it

[I'm considering taking down this review, as I'm not happy that my most "liked" review is a negative one. It's too easy to earn praise by casting stones.]

A book recommendation that I suffered through... not for charges of blasphemy, but for style. I can't stand this type of comedic writing with its obvious set-ups and zingers and formulaic irreverence. Douglas Adams wanna-be. This type of humor gets enough time between news items on NPR's "All Things Considered." Bah!
Witness the last lines (paraphrased here):

"The 'H' in Jesus H. Christ stands for Hallowed . . . you know, 'Hallowed be thy name'?"

"Oh! I thought it stood for Harvey."

He saved that gem for the end of the book.

J Berger Why read a book that you don't like? You get a solid idea of his writing from the first couple of pages. Put the book down and stop bitching.

Jonathan Mee-yow!
Why? Because I take my friends' recommendations seriously, and don't want to be accused of "not giving the book a chance" just because it's not serious literature.

Ponch I couldn't possibly agree with your review more. It's VERY poor comedic writing, in my opinion. I really tried to like it, but I don't think I laughed out loud even once.

Vanessa Ugh. Agree! I was about to gouge my eyes out based solely on the number of parentheses this guy used. Poor form!

Jonathan So many books I LOVE, yet this book review gets the most attention. I wrote the above review after a few glasses of wine, without much consideration. In fact, I looked at my review months later and was embarrassed to discover that it was poorly written. I edited immediately.

Like my review? Great. I'm forever associated with a book I hated.

marie Totally in agreement with your review.

Kalee You do realize the book was written for people with a sense of humor. Until you get one, read a different genre

Katie Horne Completely agree with your review. After the first third of the book, things begin to feel forced and comedy just doesn't work in that situation

message 9: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Please don't take this review down it helped me today decide not to finish the book. I couldn't quite put my finger on what was bothering me but it is the zingers. A few were funny in the first chapter but as I kept reading it really started getting old quick which is why I came to read some of the negative reviews.

It's important to review things honestly and most of the time good reviews aren't liked. It's just the way things work. I appreciate this review.

Mel P PLEASE keep negative reviews up - they do help others out who may feel the same way but only see good reviews. And screw the idiot who wrote "stop bitching." Humor writing is so difficult and what works for some doesn't work for others. I needed to read this. Thank you.

Amanda Bredenkamp Amanda I'm in the first chapter and the lack of proper theological research done is already making me cringe. That's not even speaking of the amount of times he's written the word bastard ALREADY. I can tell this book is going to bore the crap out of me. Levi was one of Joseph's brothers and one of the tribes on Israel, NOT the brother of Moses.

Harsha I share your opinion. T^T

Jeff That joke is less corny than it seems, in context.

In context, in fact, it's not all that much of a joke.

I think you missed the serious aspects of this book

Sandro Vadacca Well it's not a book for adults, rather for 13, 14 year olds and for that age group of course a different style and humour is required

What makes you think it's a book for teens? Have you read it? Because many situations really could not truly be understood or related to by young teens.

Sandro Vadacca Yes, I have read it as a teen, when my mom bought it for me. I think it's actually not only understandable for teens, but rather MEANT for teens in this phase of growing up.

Sandro Vadacca 12 or 13, that's the age when you normally start posing more philosophical questions to life.

Loren Norris I haven’t read this yet but please leave negative reviews up. It helps those of us that haven’t read it decide for ourselves if we want to even waste our times.

Belinda I have a 1 star rating for The Power and it's my most popular review. I also feel odd about having written something that undermines all the work an author does to produce a book, but. truth is, I hated that book. Alderton wrote decently enough though.

I also don't like Lamb. It feels try hard and it isn't interesting.
The thing is that low ratings are inevitable. Not everyone can love a book. Please honour your feelings and let the review stand.
