This is a unique one because for the first 1/3 of it I was just saying out loud “Yeah, George, I like Interview With the Vampire, too.” It really did just feel like he was doing his version of Anne Rice. But from the 40% mark through the end I didn’t put the book down again.

Handling his vampires in an unusual way, George doesn’t exactly stick to the Bram Stoker rule book but he doesn’t stray too far. York is ever the intriguing lesser evil and Julian an all-time big bad. Sour Billy is that cockroach of a character you loved to hate and Marsh was the Everyman that did the right thing, consequences be damned.

It’s no surprise to me that GRRM can write, as I’ve been reading Song of Ice & Fire books since I was 20. But going back to this you could see the talent was definitely there and it was just the tip of the iceberg. Also, I now know a lot more about steamboats than I ever thought I would.

Alexander Casanova I coincidentally just read this as well and agree with your review. Did you catch the "Fire and Blood" quote in ch.17?

I guess I didn't?

Alexander Casanova In CH. 17 Abner Marsh speaking to Toby says -
"You can't just go... usin' another kind of people, like they wasn't people at all. Know what I mean? Got to end, sooner or later. Better if it ends peaceful, but it's got to end even if it has to be with fire and blood, you see?"

I just thought it was neat to see him drop the line 10+ years before ASOIAF.

message 5: by Gary (new) - added it

Gary I'm almost certain Joshua referred to his people as 'blood of my blood', too. While it's not quite the same as a future book title, it was definitely a popular phrase of Khal Drogo's.
